Fun reaction to a landmark comedy. I saw that at a Drive-In on its opening weekend back in '97. To answer two of your questions... (1) yes, Big Boy restaurants are still around and that was always my favorite place to stop during road trips as a kid. They're franchised today across a ton of different names, but they're still out there to find. (2) Regarding the "Ham Sandwich" line as Austin is realizing that all of his idols have passed away. Mama Cass (Cass Elliot) was a singer in "The Mamas and the Papas" and you might remember their 1966 hit, Monday, Monday. Mama Cass passed away in her sleep at only 32. When her friend (and reporter) heard the news and called Elliot's manager to find out what happened, he saw a half-eaten ham sandwich on the night stand and begged her to report that Cass had choked on a ham sandwich. Because Cass was no stranger to drug use, her manager thought he was protecting her reputation. As it turns out, Cass died of a heart attack and had no drugs in her system. The ham sandwich story quickly became one of the first global urban legends... and many today still think that's how she died. Her daughter, Owen Elliot-Kugell, has a book about her mother titled "My Mama, Cass" that is scheduled to release in May 2024.

There were three Big Boy restaurants near me for my entire life, but two of them just closed down for good recently. I'm not sure why, as they always seemed to be full of people. They were there for well over 60 years. This makes me afraid for the last one.
@SilentSooYun
@SilentSooYun 3 ай бұрын
If I remember correctly, Mama Cass' heart attack was actually triggered _because_ she had dropped a great deal of weight in a very short time and her body couldn't handle the shock. She had always been a larger woman, so people _wanted_ to snicker about the sandwich; "live by the sword", "just desserts", that kind of thing. Damn shame, really, just as she was entering a whole new phase of her life...

Concerning the "pe**s enlarger pump" scene: I think it is often overlooked just how much the quartermaster adds to the comedy, mostly just via his facial expressions or lack thereof in some cases (I believe the guy was Mike Myer's comedy partner back in their standup days). That cheeky grin he wears at the end when he offers up the pump one last time is just the cherry on top of the chef's kiss.

You're right Miranda. When you haven't watched a certain movie in an age or so, or you might've been too young to appreciate it at the time, it does hit you differently when you rewatch it. & I definitely love the idea of a rewatch series. Other favorites who've first reacted to this movie, have mentioned that they weren't allowed to watch it when they were kids. So it's refreshingly unusual that your folks allowed you to watch this when you were younger.

I wasn't sure if people were gonna care about this video because it wasn't blind, but I'm glad to see that people are enjoying just as much, if not more! I found myself enjoying making the video even more because it felt more like a review/favorite moments/discussion kind of video instead of just a straight reaction where you don't know what's coming next! Which can be a lot of pressure when people are expecting you to pick up on all of their favorite moments, but when you already know you love it, and you know all the best parts (or at least you think you do until you watch it again for 100th time and still find something new lol), it almost enhances the moments you already love, and makes the video more fun all around!

Calling the first Austin Powers film “important” *should* sound silly, but I feel the exact same way! My childhood bestie and I used to “watch” movies (over the phone) together - this being one of our mutual favorites. He passed away [car-on-pedestrian accident] between our Freshman and Sophomore years of High School. I was devastated. Like the “I can’t imagine ever smiling again” kind of devastated. But, standing in line for the “viewing” at his wake, a friend walked up to me and quietly said something along the lines of: What if we got to the casket and just heard him whisper “Do I make you horny, baby?!” I broke out in a completely inappropriate fit of laughter. The looks of disapproval from multiple “grown-ups” on either side were palpable. And I didn’t care one bit because, when it was finally my turn to say a formal “goodbye,” my smile was back. As a result, the last words I “said” to my friend were joyous and thankful, rather than despairing. I genuinely credit this beyond-silly movie with helping me through one of the toughest periods of my life. #yeahbaby P.S. Two nights ago, I went to a dinner at a fancy steakhouse. The server mentioned “sea bass” as the catch-of-the-day and I reflexively asked if they were “ill-tempered.” To my surprise/relief, he instantly said “absolutely!” and did the Dr. Evil mouth-pinky gesture. Needless to say, we tipped him well!

LOL Oh god, my 7th grade science teacher played this for all of her classes and I was in her last period and she just sighed as she pushed the tape in going "I swear, if I have to hear "Swedish Made penis enlarger pump" ONE more time today" oh nostalgia. "No, not dead... burned... badly..." The Nike Air pump, as I had one in 1995... I'm not old, you're old... tightened the tongue of the shoe down onto your foot for a snugger fit, so you could run with no worries of your shoe flopping about. Dr. Evil going "Riiiiiight" is my most used reaction irl or in gif format of ALL TIME. AND I AM NOT SORRY! Second only to the Meow Mix song, which my cat knows well by now. And now a bit of fun trivia, the band you see Austin performing in, is real. Mike Myers created it, it's called Ming Tea.

oh man. i really need to watch these movies again. there are so many movies that i've seen probably nearly a hundred times but since i passed puberty the movies that i have rewatched so far i just understand way more than i ever did. it's like how you grow up on cartoons and then see clips and stuff as an adult and there's just tons of inappropriate jokes. also, you should really rewatch the rest of the Austin Powers movies. it puts a smile on my face seeing people also enjoying the movies i've loved for years.

I just had a flash of insight- look up Dean Martin as Matt Helm in _Murderer's Row_ or _The Silencers._ Dean does James Bond-type spy parody. 😁

My "cool" aunt introduced me to Austin Powers when I was little. My parents wouldn't let me watch it at home but I'd watch it any time I stayed with my aunt. It's one of my all time favorite comedies and will always have a special place in my heart. A classic.

Something I just found out recently about "Mrs. Kensington". Mike Myers was in a 1975 episode of the Canadian TV show "King of Kensington" when he was 12years old. Show was about a shop owner in Toronto's Kensington Market neighbourhood. Not too far from my office. I used to go to some places in Kensington Market to listen to live music.

This is an awesome idea. I go back and watch a lot of people’s earlier stuff once I get to know them. I enjoy wondering what they would think if they were to come back and watch those films with more experienced eyes. Just yesterday I had re- watched your spaceballs reaction and was flabbergasted to realize that had only happened 5 months ago… how much cinematic evolution you gone through in such a short period of time. It’s been great to watch. Watching you rewatch is going to be great We can watch ….as revelations are … revealed? to you. lol

As a fan of Austin Powers, I think you would enjoy a trip through his inspirations - Michael Caine's Harry Palmer (3 movies), James Coburn's Flint (2? movies), and the early Bonds, particularly the villains & henchmen (Start with Connery's Dr No)

Not just the James Bond movies, but also the "In Like Flint" movies starring James Coburn and the Matt Helm movies with Dean Martin. The Austin Powers lift things DIRECTLY from these movies, like the fembots.
