The four albums he made on Island, " Here Come The Warm Jets, " Another Green World" Taking Tiger Mountain By Strategy" and Before and After Science" are all essential ,especially with some of Phil Manzanera's best guitar work. Glad you have that Jeopardy lp. Love anything related to Howard Devoto, have not run across a video where you mention "Magazine" their first two albums, are Essential. Thanks so much for taking some footage around the convention and it was great to see the photos at the end. I am glad they enforced a mask wearing policy and Austin is probably one of the few places in the state they would really do that. So it was really funny watching the video because at 3:43 there appears a guy in a green shirt. This is the guy that also operates as a dealer and hits the Houston show. He also had his own KZbin channel for a while. As with all your videos, 70% or more of what you show are bands I am not aware of. I am really curious about 'The Sound.' I will have to check out that one. I should probably sample Boomtown Rats a bit more. I only know them for I Don't Like Mondays. Adam Ant is another one that I took for granted and I only know him from Goody Two Shoes since it played on MTV all of the time. So glad you scored an original of 100% Fun. That's one of Matthew Sweet's best.

@@TheOmahaIntrovert I'm guessing that you are too young to have experienced this but I think it was 1979 or so, The Shoes had a 30 minute episode, program or commercial I don't really know what it was called but it was on HBO and it was part of the paid HBO programming that you would see back when they did a monthly viewing guide that you received in the mail with your bill. It consisted of the videos for some of the songs on 'Present Tense' that would eventually be played on MTV two years later in 1981. That was how I was turned on to them. Hi Hanna You have certainly crossed some records off your want list. So pleased you now have some Sound LP's, I can recommend everything they did. Any Trouble were a great band and Clive Gregson is so underrated. Love those Joe Jackson LP's. Alan McGee named Creation after the 1960's band of the same name. They came from the same area as me. They are like The Who and Biff Bam Pow was the name one of their singles. Don't know that Off Broadway, its gone on my list. The Members are a great band they produced a punk classic with Sound of the Suburbs. I really like Guided By Voices and they and Robert Pollard are so prolific. Also thank you for recommending The Records, I picked their LP Crashes today and also a Devo, Duty Now for the Future, a load of Raspberries singles and a number of Japan singles with fine picture sleeves at our local bi-weekly record fair. I would say it was well worth you going to Austin. It looked a well run and very safe environment. Take care. Gary

Greetings, Gary! Clive Gregson definitely seems underrated! I guess he keeps putting out music, too. Yes, I love Creation from the 60s and in fact I have a few of theirs on vinyl...reissues, of course. One is a compilation. Very cool that McGee decided to name his band after one of their singles indeed! I hope you dig Off Broadway. Definitely a band worth checking out. It's hard to keep up with GBV. So much material! Ah, I'm thrilled you were able to pick up Crashes from the Records. That's such a great followup LP! You really picked up some gems at that record fair, I'd say! Yay on the Japan singles! "Guitar Beat" by The Raybeats was constantly on my turntable in 1981, I have the original one with the circles on the cover not the green suits one, I think that came out later. Saw them so many times here in New York City, they were also a great live band. That Howard Devoto album that you acquired is a big favorite. The promo man from the record label sent me that and I loved it. "Rainy Season" is such an outstanding track. Glad you enjoyed yourself. I went to a record show in Long Island that was usually a pretty good show, first one they had since the pandemic, I went for the early admission which was probably a waste. Very disappointed, a lot fewer vendors and not many that were there had much good stuff. I spent under $75 at this show, because there wasn't much, tables were spread apart. A lot of the better usual vendors were not there, unfortunately. I love P/I/L, my 2 favorite albums by them are Metal Box a/k/a Second Edition and Flowers Of Romance. I also love First Issue. I know you'll love them. Stay well my beloved friend. Look forward to hearing more from you. Also some punk rarities like a Violent Femmes from 91 Why do Birds sing? which is like a continuation of their classic debut, and a Gordon Gano "gospel punk" album called The Mercy Seat, I guess Gano is not so serious about that gospel stuff in that album but I can't find any information on that one lol. Another punk oddity I found its a Shrink 10". Yes Shrink is the name of the artist :). Also some obscure New Wave and Power pop, lots of reggae, some hip hop, some metal like Girlschool. I always find stuff from the 80's and early 90's. Another oddity I found is the solo album from the Jesus & Mary Chain drummer which is as good as any J&M Chain album but better produced. Been getting into the post punk sub-genre called "mutant disco" and found some stuff like Material, Was not Was, Lounge Lizards, Kid Creole, not so hard to find stuff there if you want to look into a new thing. The only difficult album to find in that sub-genre would be The Contortions I think.

Greetings, Alejandro. How are you? I bet that Extras from the Jam is really neat! Sounds like you've been finding some good obscure stuff and I commend you! A solo album from the J&M drummer, interesting! I believe I saw the first Lounge Lizards LP at Guestroom Records but I passed on it. I had sampled a song or two and didn't really think it was my thing but I'll give it another listen. I'll try to look up the Contortions, too! Thanks for all the recommendations! You rock!

@@TheOmahaIntrovert Yes that Jam compilation has a couple of Who covers. Mutant disco is one of post punk strangest subgenres. You can find a chapter about it on the Simon Raynolds book. It's weird pseudo jazz and satirical disco and and not so melodic music but i learned to like it. Jon Moore and the Express Way is the name of the J&MCH exdrummer's band. So you are still finding 79's and 80's albums :), please don't worry if you don't have every good album from that era if you want to make more best of year's videos, nobody does !

Love the Jam's cover of "Disguises"! Yeah, nobody has every album. I'm not worried about it, I'll just show a pic of the album cover and mention it if I'm missing it for now! :-) Mutant disco is very intriguing lol.

You were like Moses parting the sea at the record show. Anyhow, I picked up that PIL recently at a local record shop with obi strip. I was curious to see how your trip the show went. I was the one who went to one about a month ago any found some decent stuff.

Congrats on finding Flowers of Romance from PiL with the OBI! Hope you continue going to shows and finding great gems!

Some great finds Hanna. Count me among those whom highly recommends Brighter than 1000 Suns. Jaz Coleman's throaty "roar" we hear on so many Killing Joke songs is abandoned on this release. There may be extra tracks on the 2007 CD reissue, but I'm not 100% sure. A beautiful and lyrically powerful album. Hope you enjoy it. Love The Stranglers! If you haven't, check out Feline and Stranglers IV.

Hi Todd! I'm hoping to carve out some time tonight to spin KJ's Brighter Than a Thousand Suns! I get my best recommendations from my viewers/friends, so I also appreciate these Stranglers album suggestions! I'll be on the lookout whenever I dig next. First the account needs to recover a bit. Hehe! Hope you're having a great week!

Also, the Fall can be a crazy rabbit hole. Got some friends that can talk about Brix when she came to their party after their show in Lincoln back in the day!

No kidding! I think this is why I put off listening to the Fall for so long..their extensive catalog intimidated me! I bet those Brix stories are fun to hear!

I forgot to mention something in my last comment. I recently became aware of the band Off Broadway because they are playing a show July 4th with Cheap Trick! How exciting. I wonder how many of these bands are still kicking around?
@TheOmahaIntrovert3 жыл бұрын
Yes, isn't that awesome that Off Broadway/Cheap Trick playing at the same bill? Apparently they were also on the same tour in the early 80s! So a nice reunion of sorts! :-)

Thanks for showing the Austin show. I've never been, but always heard about it. I'm surprised they still had it with the Covid thing, though I don't think Texas was hit as hard as other places. Not only would the convention be cool, but Austin is so dang cool too, nice laid back vibes and good places to eat. I'd never heard of Off Broadway and some of the others. I always thought The Sounded a bit like Echo & The Bunnymen. Those Joej Jackson lps are great. I don't listen to much punk, but Jackson stuff still resonates with me. Hope you enjoyed the trip.
@TheOmahaIntrovert3 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave! Thanks for watching. Texas was hit hard last summer with COVID I believe. Austin is such a great city to visit. It's probably my favorite place in Texas so far. Joe Jackson is a great equalizer artist! Hope all is well.

Alejandro Escovedo used to work at Waterloo back in the 90s when they had the vinyl store just around the corner. Have you heard of Doctors Mob? A mid-80s power pop band from Austin. I recommend their debut album if you can ever find it. Same with a jangle pop band called Zeitgeist from Austin. Translate Slowly is the album I have by them. They changed their name to the Reivers after that album.
@TheOmahaIntrovert3 жыл бұрын
Hi Eric! Love Zeitgeist. I have Translate Slowly both on vinyl and CD. The harmonies really are excellent! Have a couple of Reivers LPs, too! I'll have to check out Doctors Mob. Thanks for the recommendation. Very cool about Escovedo previously working at Waterloo! Cheers!

Wow you covered a ton of ground on this one. Nice score on the Matthew Sweet. “Lost My Mind” is another great song on that album. The Fall was the first band I saw live. They opened for New Order on the Brotherhood tour in 1987. If you like the Fall, and you like Modern Lovers, there’s a band called Fountaines D.C. that is a great blend of those two bands. They’re out of Ireland and their album Dogrel (2019) is fantastic. It’s a good look at a band that is clearly influenced by the Fall. PIL is another good band. It was really different sound he went with after The Sex Pistols. I saw him down in Mexico for a video shoot. The song was “Covered” and I heard it about twenty times in a row while they shut the video. He did start with a regular show, then the video stuff, and ended with a regular show again. It was ten bucks to see him. I got to see the Buzzcocks in the early nineties in a bar with about 15 - 20 people in attendance. I think it was a impromptu performance to prepare for a bigger show for the next night. I won’t bore you with old stories, but you brought out some records that brought back some memories for me. Great Vid.

Some great finds! That Raybeats album Is a bit more straight forward than their first which has some strange songs incorporating an organ. Two members went on to form instrumental surf band Los Straightjackets. If you’re looking for more Howard Devoto check out his other band Luxuria the debut album “Unanswerable Lust “ is excellent. He also did an album with Pete Shelly called “ Buzzkunst” in 2001, it’s a bit hit and miss, but has some interesting tracks.

Greetings, Kevin! Ohhh, helpful tidbit with the Raybeats/Los Straightjackets connection! I had no idea! I learn so much from you all! Ah, you reminded me that I need to get Unanswerable Lust! I almost scored a copy online a few weeks ago but then stopped myself because I realized I might find it on my trip. No such luck. Back on the hunt! I'll be sampling Buzzkunst! Thanks!

Great finds! Shanachie Records released a bunch of dub and roots reggae albums in the 80s/90s. Really good stuff. A few weeks ago out here in the SF Bay Area we had our first "record swap" in Oakland. It was cool. I found an old roots reggae record and a couple watermelons. 😄 If you ever make it out to Northern California/SF Bay Area check out 1234 Go! Records in Oakland (they're a shop and label), Streetlight Records and Needle to the Groove. There is another place called The Record Man. But they recently had a fire. Hopefully they are ok. I will check it out next week. But all these spots have great selections
@TheOmahaIntrovert3 жыл бұрын
Hi Nahui! Thanks for letting me know a little more about Shanachie Records! Very cool that you attended a record swap in Oakland. I lived in Modesto, CA for a year back in 2006. I wasn't collecting vinyl then but I went to plenty of music stores in the Bay Area as I was buying lots of used CDs. Amoeba, Rasputin, and J Street Records in Sacramento are the ones I remember most. Of course I think J Street may have closed since. I doubt I'll be making it to California again anytime soon but great place to buy music! Cheers!

Buzzcocks and TheJam, neither are among my faves from those groups. Very good albums none the less: Second Edition and Flowers of Romance, both were too weird for me. Though it's been a very long time since i heard them. Just today i heard No More Heroes by Stranglers from the radio, made me think i should check out more of their records. The Raven seemed interesting. Sounds like you had a good time traveling and visiting record stores. Pasi
@TheOmahaIntrovert3 жыл бұрын
Hi there, Pasi. What is your favorite LP from the Buzzcocks? This one is not my favorite from the Jam, either but in my opinion they didn't put out a bad album and Sound Affects is my #1 followed by All Mod Cons. The Raven is a great record from the Stranglers, although a different direction in sound from their earlier very punk stuff. Always good to hear from you. Peace!

I taped the great rock n roll swindle from my friends vinyl when it came out. A lot of it is pretty funny. I got it on cd a lot later. imo adams best album is kings of the w f. I like side 2 of tension the best , to me it’s kinda industrial? punk. That convention looked kinda empty. At least you went to Waterloo and S C😁 Nice shout out .. thx H.
