In this video Austin's back out working on his Buick. First we do a little engine work and progress to getting his engine to fire up for the first time. We then move on the to the rear and get him to pull the rear diff and we mock up a universal 4 link and install a 4x4 S10 diff.

Man, that was good to hear the old girl fire up, Brent. As you say, she's one step (well, a couple now) closer to being able to move under her own power again......and I bet Austin can't wait! Speaking of the young fella - he's certainly getting more confident with the tools and around the workshop in general.....and that's great to see. It's a lot to learn with a steep curve on the learning process, but if he can walk (drive?) away with the rudiments and a basic know-how of what makes the car do what it does and keeps up the interest factor, he'll have a lifetime hobby that will keep him entertained until he's older than either you or me.....and it will always be something that he can enjoy the fruits of all his hard work as well. Keep going, Austin. You're doing fine, buddy - no matter what you may think of your efforts right now. Practice and experience will give you the speed and knowledge that Brent has....and I'm sure the "old fella" would be happy to offer advice if you are ever stuck. Just relax, go with the flow and never be scared to ask questions or put forward ideas. Brent will be able to tell you if they are possible or explain why they aren't and maybe you can come up with something else together. The Buick will be one mean cruiser when she's finished and that engine sounds strong.....so be glad there's a diff out of a 4x4 going into the beast, buddy! All the best.

I was just like him, not knowing what I was doing, but I can see how I could have been better at anticipating the next step to help the job go smoothly. hope this is helpful for you and the young man , when you install the carb "put all the bolts in and open the throttle all the way and sung a couple to make sure that the butterfly's don't stick - next when you installed the distributor when after a few turn and drops you were 180 degrees away "you could have pulled out and turned the rotor" , and finally: when the dist is in and pointed to #1 put a spark plug in the #1 wire and ground it to the engine turn on the ignition power and turn the dist slowly back and forth , until the spark plug fires "snug the dist down just before spark" and the engine will start right up .... having fun is the most important part of the project your a lucky young man

That pile of rust that Austin swept from beneath the Buick is far smaller than the multiple piles of rust I’ve swept from beneath a vintage VW Beetle - those cars shed rust like a dog sheds his winter fur coat in the spring. I like the idea of converting it to a 2-door. A couple of ways to do that. Move the B pillar back and find a couple of doors from a 2-door donor car or lengthen the existing doors with material from the back doors. You know both ways. Fun and semi-easy project for you both. It will improve the look of the car...especially for a guy Austin's age who will drive it to school.

Great to see you and Austin getting the engine fired up Your teaching Austin, puts him many steps of the average student, because you are giving him the one skill that most younger people don't get a chance to learn, and that is that any part, from any other vehicle, can be made to work like the car was designed for that setup.
