Austin is 23 years old. He first developed DPDR last year, triggered by a bad weed experience.
Over the next year or so he struggled with the symptoms of Depersonalization and Derealization, in particular those related to memory and vision.
Fortunately, Austin has since made a complete recovery! 👏
In this brand new interview he tells me all about his experience with and recovery from Depersonalization Disorder. 😊👀

the same exact thing happened to me, where i greened out really badly and just didn't recover, now no matter what, i feel not real and dizzy in public, which has caused this anxiety and constant fear of passing out, ive had to quit my job and nothing seems to shift it, probably due to thew fact i cant stop thinking about it, but its not going away after almost 2 years and im starting to give up hope, but your channel makes me feel some comfort that recovery is possible, it was confusing at the start because i didnt know what was happening, drs told me my blood was fine and sent me away but when i found out about DP i understood that was what i had and was so happy i wasnt going crazy lol

Hey Erin, thanks for your comment 😊 Don’t worry, that all sounds like a very typical case of weed-induced DP to me. I know it can be frightening but remember that it's just your body and brain's natural response to stress and anxiety. It's not permanent and it can't hurt you 😊 You can and will recover. Make sure to read through all the info and articles on my website at www.dpmanual.com And if you would like to speak to a medical professional please don't hesitate to do so. I would recommend finding an anxiety specialist if possible as they will likely be more familiar with DPDR.

It’s nice to know that we are not alone in this, and that people do go through this and experience this type of trauma. I am currently experiencing the derealization and depersonalization , I’ve been going through this now for about six months, and some days are terrifying. I would really like to work with you and see if you could help me.
@Dpmanual

Hey Patricia, thanks for your comment -- and no, you're definitely not alone 😊 I know DPDR can be scary but just remember that it’s a natural reaction to stress and anxiety, and people experience it all the time. The National Institute on Mental Illness estimates that up to 75% of people experience at least one depersonalization / derealization episode in their lives. It's part of your brain's natural defence mechanism and usually it only lasts a few seconds or minutes at a time. It's only when it's focused on as a separate problem (feeling like you're going crazy / in a dream etc) that it can turn into a feedback loop with the anxiety that caused it in the first place. But no matter what caused it or how long you've had it, you can always switch it off completely by stopping that anxious feedback loop. Make sure to carefully read through all the articles and info on my website at www.dpmanual.com and my book The Depersonalization Manual. And if you would like to speak to a medical professional please don't hesitate to do so. I would recommend finding an anxiety specialist if possible as they will likely be more familiar with DPDR 👍

I don’t know what I am currently experiencing. I greened out on weed and had my first panic attack (I think) then had some dpdr that faded away the next day. Fast forward 2 weeks I had my second panic attack and have had derealization since then (probably about a month). Honestly it’s not too bad anymore, was only debilitating for the first 2 days until I figured out what I was experiencing had a name. My biggest worry is that I will never feel “normal” again. I have moments every day where i forget I have DR but the second I realise I haven’t been experiencing it, it comes straight back. I just don’t understand how I am going to consciously see the world in the same way I did before. I appreciate the videos, they make me feel a lot better ❤

I just bought the DP Manual and started the recovery literally insanely. The most important thing while having DP is not to rush through decisions and try to calm down for a minute. And don’t get delusional, PLEASEE! Remember, at an anxious state of mind, you are very valuable, so be careful who you listen to and who you ask for help. Hope you all get through. This is literally the scariest thing that happened in my life

@@felbaud so the hardest part for me is not to freak out while having dpdr and just thinking, that it is only temporary and will go out. AND to not think about it in a spiritual way and that this is some weird universe state of mind. Just be remindful of it just being anxiety. Try to have your brain occupied with things you love and don’t focus about it too much. Be aware that it will take time to recover, and don’t be disappointed if you take a step back with your progress, this is absolutely normal. And hang out with people you love as much as you can. This is absolutely important. And at any cost avoid caffeine and foods with a lot of sugar, this will make your brain go wild with the racing thoughts. And believe in yourself!!

@@felbaudOf course there is no cure, because this is how your body works and defends itself. When i am doing thing i enjoy, i don’t even notice it. You have to break out of the habit of thought you are in and try to see things differently. I would actually recommend you buying the dp Manual, it actually helps a lot. A lot of times i turn it on and sleep directly. You are what you think. Being stuck in the same loophole of thinking wouldn’t make it better my guy. Believe in yourself. I believe in you! We as humans are meant to be here and are allowed to do the thing we love to to do. You are made to be a part of this beautiful universe. It is hard, and getting out of the thoughts is hard. But at the end of the day, you can do it! May all sound cliché but the world needs you, everybody you love needs you! Believe me!

Interesting… I had my most intense/profound weed experience when I was out of town in another state. Set and setting really does affect the high. I had the same experience of being thrown into a new “dimension”. It felt like I had died and gone into an afterlife/ alternate reality. I had feelings of extreme empathy, seeing another person upset and literally feeling their feelings as my own. I had audio visual… hallucinations? That’s not exactly the right word but I would hear certain sounds and there would be vivid, cartoony, images I would perceive. I was 16 at the time, and I had very bad derealization and existential anxiety for a couple years. Worrying that I was the only person in existence and that I was completely alone. It’s hard to unexperience something like going into another reality or plane of existence. Like a fish only knows water as their reality, I feel like I popped out of the water and now I can never go back to only knowing water as my reality. This is all so very hard to describe, but I feel like people here will know what I’m talking about. Some people will say you’re exaggerating or that weed would never make you experience something like this but if it’s happened to you, you know how scary and unforgettable and real it is. Now, at 30, I still have a bit of derealization now and then but I learned long ago to accept it. Like I said, I think once you experience another plane of reality, you will never ever be able to go back to not having experienced it. I sort of think that’s what derealization actually is. Grappling with the fact that there are different realities happening around us all the time. Or just knowing that it’s possible to be thrown into another reality where you feel completely alone. Makes me think of “Hell”. “Total separation from God.” I’m not exactly religious but I actually understand what that means. I don’t know, maybe this is all just the brain being cross-wired by substances and you are just perceiving the same reality in a different way. But even then, to know how much your experience of reality can change, that’s still a lot to take in. Especially as a young person. Like I said though, I have come to accept this and I somewhat see it as a positive. I have a very different way of looking at the world after these experiences. I feel like I have a deeper spiritual understanding of this world. The lens has widened. Best of luck to anyone dealing with this stuff. It’s no joke but take it from me, you can live a happy and healthy life.

planetary alignment. that is a brilliant analogy, and resonates alot any time its occurred. How could it not? When all the randomness & unknowns, that most of the time are trivial, or not even an after thought of an after thought, for the first time, synchronizes to this audio, visual & physiological experience within this biological antenna...that ONLY "god" knows how long or how many times uHave been suspended in your own manifestation. A sub-orbital 100% polarized to the YOU-niverse. As far as the mind can reach. And down to the taste of that breath u you took. Trying to quantify that as just some anxiety. I have been derealizing for 15 years + OCD, then slow-flowing anxiety and depression began. I've never had panic attacks or existential throughts. Unfortunately, not paying attention to the symptoms and ignoring it did not help. Normally, I participated in life, studied, worked, played sports and met friends. However, from year to year the derealization deepened, SSRIs help only for OCD and depression but not for DP/DR. I have been in psychodynamic therapy for a year with psychedelics (MDMA, Psilocybin) and DP/DR are decreasing instead of getting worse for the first time in my life. Which does not mean that I recommend psychedelic therapy to everyone. But it is also proof that DP/DR is also traumatic (difficult childhood). Do you have any alternative methods for treating trauma? TRE method, Ayahuasca, CBT, ? Perhaps someone helped medication? Perhaps undiagnosed ADHD/ADD or Asperger can have an impact? Share your experience. Best regards !
