Hi Geoff, I am removing my flywheel and so far having problems with the removal tool, broken two bolts so far, the ones in the middle ! Now I have seen you video I will return to the workshop and try to give it a clout next time.... I must say I loved your film, very amusing, really put a smile on my face, thank you. Keep up the good films.... hope you find the bit you dropped, just lucky it didn’t fall the other way, then you would never find it 😁

LaxtonM Glad you found the video helpful and the reason I post them. Luckily I didn't use my Navy language when that part pinged its way into a corner somewhere. No doubt I will find out what it was when I come to assemble somethings! Cannot believe you managed to shear those bolts😮 They must be made of really cheap/crappy material, as it should be nigh on impossible to do so using hand tools, and without a monster extension. Learned the hammer trick years ago when building my race car and engines. The video doesn't show just how hard I hit that bolt. If that still doesn't work, I would consider hammering the outside edge of the flywheel, at different positions. That taper joint is tight as can be imagined so not easy to break. The shock helps on most occasions. The video doesn't do justice to the loud crack mine made when it did let go, hence my initial thought that the bolt has sheared. Good luck on your next attempt BUT use an HT bolt. IF still no luck, then I would be scratching my head and thinking of heating up the flywheel, using a heat gun as I tried again.

Just had another thought, what if the flywheel has been assembled with Loctite or similar locking fluid!? The ONLY way to break that joint is by HEAT and by that I mean using blowtorch/gas etc to melt the stuff. That's the ONLY way to do it having done so myself, the locking fluid bubbles out of the joint once the right temp is reached. May I suggest a post on the friendly Austin Seven site listed below, as I'm sure others have had similar problems, but snapping that bolt makes me cringe! www.austinsevenfriends.co.uk/forum/forumdisplay.php?fid=14

May be a bit late, BUT do heat the flywheel up slowly to prevent any distortion, and maybe start by using an electric heat gun first then switching over. Suffering health problems with my waterworks at present, so not able to think and/or concentrate as usual. Please let me know how you get on 🙏

Geoff Thanks for the response, I understand you must be inundated with comments. I find your past experience invaluable so please keep going. Sorry to hear about your health issues I have the similar prostate problems but hey that's common amongst guts of our age. Mu engine that I'm working on us a 1935 ruby engine and it looks like it's been sleeved but no wear or visible lips. I think the big ends are white metal so if they look ok I may leave them as they are as well as the mains. I know I may be taking the easy way out but my engineering prowess is limited to calves and rings. Very best wishes. Colin

Colin, Snap! Mine is a '35 with sleeved block as well, being 1.5mm/1/16" thick. You can tell by cleaning round the bore edge to reveal the joint. The big ends are white metal, and mine are in good nick thank goodness, with just one air small pocket. Glad my videos are of interest and helpful. Wish this was available when doing my racing car. Foot improving each day now, so keeping fingers crossed that not much longer before being active again. I need to do a short video showing both the sleeving and white metal on/in the big ends. Your post has jogged my memory, thanks. This one will be quick and easy as I don't need to stand.

Hello Geoff, I'm watching from the formerly democratic USA. I own a '37 Ruby that I am slowly bringing back to glory. I'm hoping you can advise me as to whether it is possible to lap the valves while the engine is still in the chassis. I'm fairly sure it is but would appreciate your opinion. If I decide to proceed I will be buying a top end kit from the Seven Workshop, head and in/ex gaskets and possibly a set of tappet screws. Any advice is appreciated. Thanx, Alan

Alan, Sincere apologies for not responding sooner. No idea what happened except getting old. You could grind the valves in with engine in-situ BUT it will be a PITA, having to remove valve springs and followers. May I suggest you ask for advice on the Austin Seven Friends Forum where members have far more experience than I do. pub25.bravenet.com/forum/static/show.php?usernum=2099944454&frmid=5

You should have left on the retaining nut a couple of threads for safety sake so it could not fall on your feet.

Colin, Nothing at the moment as the hot/humid weather has affected me more so this year than ever before, not helped by Big C treatment. All work has stopped for now, as I'm laid up for the duration with my left foot swollen after I was grabbed by a vice I was walking past, and suddenly finding myself flat on my arse on Thursday! Pulled tendons I think. Hobbling around using a walking stick and Monopod. Not much sympathy from 'Her indoors' of course 😤 This will give me time to sort out priorities. The body is now connected to the Tilter/Rotisserie and I was about to do a video of the set-up when my contretemps with vice took place. I have, however, had another look at the 'connection' at the rear of the body and decided that a diagonal brace needs adding just to be safe. Things do happen for a reason we may nor realise at the time, and it would really make my day it find the body deforming due to lack of a single brace. If you have anything specific in mind, then no reason for me not to make a start on it.

I am having problem with threads where you have inserted two bolts...i have 1934 Austin ...How to solve
@geoffhalstead1811
@geoffhalstead1811 7 жыл бұрын
Sanjay, What do you mean by problem with the threads? Are they completely stripped or just the top thread blurred over? If threads stripped then two choices: 1 - Use a thread repair insert to replace stripped threads, such as Helicoil. Expensive for just one or two repairs, so the next suggestion will do. 2 - Drill out and re-tap for next size bolt. If top threads blurred over, then use a countersink to remove the top thread or two. To clean all tapped threads, if no tap available, use a hacksaw to cut a groove/slot down the full length of the thread on one of the bolts, and this will collect any grunge lodged in the threads. Hope this helps Thanks for viewing my videos, more coming soon.
