The most iconic rivalry of all time, the one between the 2 wrestlers who made the attitude era so legendary. The fact at some point they were pratically both the faces of the company, both so popular and huge stars made it even more legendary. All the 3 wm matches are amazing for different reasons, especially the last 2. Wm 15 consolidated Austin and at the same time paved the way for Rock. Wm 17 was the biggest match in wrestlemania history in my opinion, the 2 man at the max of their popularity who finally collided again. Also it was a masterpiece of storytelling by the start to the end, where both turned in facts all the words they said in the previous interview with Jim Ross. Wm 19 in the end is simply my favourite match of all time. The perfect ending of a circle and in my opinion the last final chapter and definitive conclusion of the attitude era. Also the fact this was Steve's last match made it so poetic. Him fighting for the last time against his greatest rival was the best way to end his career and everytime i see the post match when Rock breaks character to thank him always gets me emotional. In the backstage segment he said to Bischoff he didn't want to face Triple H because at this time he needs a victory over Austin at WM rather than the world title. So he cancelled his match with Booker T. Then Bischoff said that he still needs The Rock in the match at RAW because "sponsors and advertises were promised to see The Rock in action" or something like that. So The Rock went on to face The Hurricane with whom he had a backstage segments for some weeks during that period. Still an awesone video though. One of the best feuds of all time. At first, Austin's heel turn had a lot of potential. HHH getting injured pretty much messed that up. Him sucking up to McMahon was hilarious, but probably turned a lot of people off from wrestling in general. Even still, when he briefly turned face against the Alliance, he got one of the loudest, longest crowd reactions I've ever heard. That second heel turn really hurt his popularity, even though he did great work as a heel and honestly had some of his best matches ever (Angle and Benoit matches come to mind).

Austin’s first heel turn was alright, but would have worked better if Rock was there, unfortunately Rock was in Hollywood, and it left us with a missing puzzle piece. While yes, the Debra angle of the whole feud is mostly forgotten leading into X7 I do appreciate how it helped fill out the time between the rumble and the mania match pretty successfully. The sit down interview overshadows everything but there was months of television/ppv’s produced before that pinnacle moment and the Rocks pursuit of the title was very effectively kept connected to Austin with the inclusion of the rattlesnakes wife. You look at the months long builds done since then, the Becky/Rousey train wreck of a build with knee injuries and Trips/Steph and then McMahon/Flair inserting themselves into the whole mess and having Austins wife manage the Rock for a few weeks before taking a bump resulting in Steve attacking Rocky is grade A writing.

I think the only way The Rock would have got equal backing from the crowd is if Austin went into Mania as the champion, I feel like fans like a title change at Mania. The whole angle with Austin needing to be the champ could have been flipped to just say he needs to BE champ. I loved this match tho and I hated it when Austin turned heel
@roodypoochrisw4 жыл бұрын
Yeah Austin hadn’t been champ since 1999, and having Austin going after the belt automatically made people more on Austin’s side.

My favorite will always be Wrestlemania 17, it's where I realized that while I really liked Stone Cold, The Rock was definitely my favorite wrestler ( he is my favorite all-time now ). I remember watching it at a movie theater with one of my buddies and his brother and everyone there being hype. I also remember it being weird because it was a completely different atmosphere from when I'd usually go there to watch a movie ( it was basically a wrestling audience but watching at a movie theater. I remember being super pissed at how Rock was being booed ( even after Stone Cold had clearly aligned with McMahon ). Good times... lol

It seems appropriate that the consensus Greatest Wrestlemania of All-time also marks the unofficial end of Professional Wrestling greatest Boom Period. Could you have picked a more perfect representation of the Attitude Era than The Rock vs Stone Cold Steve Austin battling it out for the Winged Eagle?
@liquidgeorge4 жыл бұрын
xThe_noJx EVERYTHING about it was sublime, which sadly made it rather bittersweet because it truly did feel like the end of wrestling. It’s hard to articulate, but there was an emptiness and a sort of knowing at the time that wrestling had reached its ultimate peak.

@Ultra Instinct 94 I mean I wish Rock won that second one but Austin needing to cheat and go that far overboard to beat Rock is almost as good. To be fair if Rock did win that second match clean Austin would be yesterday's news in a heartbeat. It was a smart plan to keep both guys at the top.

People say their feud was one sided. But I don’t see it that way…. To me, their rivalry was like war of attrition. Austin spiked to the top dogs while The Rock gradually was getting stronger reputation wise, fighting wise, and mentality wise. It really was about how long it was gonna take until the script would finally be flipped. Each match prior to 19 that they had always had interceptions or Vince’s involvement in it. But each of them gave it their all. Each match until 19 Austin had won…. But you can tell The Rock was slowly getting stronger. Look at their very first match with The Rock defending the intercontinental championship that he stole from Austin and how much he had to rely on help to keep the belt. And look at WM19. The difference is night and day. The Rock was originally easy mode for Austin…. And he turned into something difficult for Austin to beat the more they face off against each other.
