The signature performance of Danny Boy by which all others will be measured! John Gary was among the greatest of all American voices. He had a three octave range and it was effortless with amazing breath control. He was admired as the best amongst his peers. John was one of Elvis Presley's favorite singers. He should have been a household name, but never had the same exposure or fame that lesser performers enjoyed. Amazing talent like Jack Jones and Vic Damone - John Gary was appreciated for his artistry by his loyal fans - and for a very good reason. Hopefully, with these videos, many other people will share and discover the magic of John Gary.

I don't beleive there is a more heartfelt and beautiful rendition of Danny Boy. John Gary was endowed with a perfect pitch and delivery for these irish classics.

John Gary was a Phenomenon, he was special indeed and probably had one of the most purist voices ive ever heard but to talk in absolutes is a dangerous thing as there will ALWAYS be some-one better, in this case as for heartfelt and beauty Mario Lanza when singing this song brings any-one with a heart and soul to tears.

No fanfare, no groupies, just humility, John Gary was a quiet legend. Here, Gary was not in his prime yet his voice is still rather special.

Gary was a once time diver who held two underwater endurance records. This diving experience led him to the great breath control displayed in his gift of song.

And he smoked! I walked right past him while he was at the bar at The Hungry I in San Francisco in 1964. He had a cigarette in his hand.

I've just discovered the incomparable John Gary. I'm 67 and have always preferred the kinds of songs he sings but I've just now discovered him. It is astonishing to me that someone with such a beautiful voice is not more well known.

Despite this song having been in my recommendations periodically for years, I've only just now listened to it after happening upon John Gary a week or so ago and wow, he's definitely one of my favourite singers already. His version of "Once Upon a Time" is perhaps my absolute favourite song I've ever heard. It's not just that his voice is so lovely and his control is excellent, it's that his ability to act out a song is remarkable. Hearing that song in the right mood will bring tears to my eyes, and this rendition of Danny Boy likewise did the same. This man should've been a household name and hailed as one of the finest vocalists in recorded music. His work is an absolute gift.

I absolutely agree. No surprise, BK loved his work too. He actually had his own show for a short time with the hopes that people would catch on but not enough of the public did. Everybody in the business knew his work and respected him but its a great mystery how the public, for the most part missed him.

I would sing this to my son when he was a child and he would always end with" I love you SO much !" . He and his wife are now divorcing ,one child, and the song makes one wish he was that small child again so things might be different.

Just finished listening to John's "Little Bit of Heaven" cd (since it's St. Patrick's Day and all) and thought I'd see if there were any newly posted videos for Danny Boy..... sure enough, this one's a keeper (don't think I've ever seen any clips with that 70's hair happenin')..... if there's ever been a more under-appreciated vocalist, I'd love to hear about it.
