Back in the day, lots of folks from Quebec would come down to New England for medical care. When Americans talked about Universal Health Care, the argument against it was always, "Look at Canadians. They wait months for care." That argument is long dead and buried. Called my Dr's office in April 2024 to book an appointment for a physical. (patient for 42 years) Earliest available appt? April 2025. Thank you, healthcare company with $22 billion in profits for 2023. I pay a lot for health insurance and there's no guarantee that a claim will be approved. I'd rather pay more taxes than continue handing my money to the world's largest healthcare company, whose implicit focus is profit over patients. They are the antithesis of the Hippocratic Oath.

They get to charge you monthly, require that you pay thousands out of pocket before they'll cover *anything*, continue charging even after you've done that, refuse to pay because one or more people involved in providing care (such as an anesthesiologist, who often travel between multiple hospitals) isn't specifically contracted to them, and/or deny coverage arbitrarily, including if you didn't contact them for approval before care was provided, such as if you're unconscious and rushed to the hospital. Because insurance companies are the worst. They demand special group deals while also paying doctors less. With marketing and lobbying, they effectively forced the health service providers to accept their product, and adjusted their prices accordingly. Ask the health service providers for individual payment options, instead of going through a 3rd party insurance companies who have incentive to increase costs for both doctors and patients.

yeahhh... my doctor wanted to charge me an exhorbitant amount of money for a treatment i'll have to get on a regular basis, because they wanted to get the product through their specific distributor... we've been having to fight with them to get it the way the insurance wants instead to make it be literally a tenth of the cost, and therefore actually affordable. and we've had to postpone this appointment twice because the doctor can't get their crap together. sometimes, the doctor/doctor's office just sucks...... :/ it's rough having something that only a few people will even treat, although it's the insurance's fault that i can only see this person because the other few people are out of network

I have literally never encountered any of these problems. From the time my cancer was discovered to the time it was removed was less than a month, it could have been sooner but my 30th wedding anniversary was 2 weeks from my diagnosis. Through wisely choosing my insurance provider and the hospital offering to take the insurance payout, I paid nothing out of pocket.

@@nickmonks9563 Thank you for your kind words. Sadly, many people aren't aware of the programs out there to protect patients from ruinous medical bills. If you get sick, talk to the hospital's finance department. They assigned me an advocate who guided me through the process. Leave no stone unturned.

I'm currently "lucky enough" to be poor enough to qualify for expanded Medicaid. The moment I break through into a higher tax bracket, I actually take home less because even my nonprofit HMO will charge at least $300/month as a premium. All because the US didn't take enough civilian casualties in WWII to warrant an urgent overhaul of our healthcare system (and because Ted Kennedy didn't think Nixoncare, which is comparable to what a lot of developed countries have, was good enough).

My favorite is when the doctor messes up the surgery and you have to stay an extra week in the hospital and have more surgeries and procedures that you also have to pay for.

I love that within a minute of watching I went "Oh, this is totally roasting the American Healthcare System isn't it?" And I love that I was right ^^ (To be serious, it really is horrible that something ao important is severely difficult to work with, and how much money it takes from the average person)

@@Yesica1993 It's called being cooperative with other people to ensure everyone has help they need when they need it. You may be fine now, but at some point you might have a medical bill that bankrupts you, which only happens because of the broken healthcare system in the US. The system isn't very good and most of it goes to the military though, so there should be way more spent on social help.

The reason it took me so long to realize that this was a scathing rebuke of American healthcare is because modern media streaming services work just like this, too. 😢 There's a high monthly membership fee, then most of the things you want to watch are "out of network", some things are behind an additional paywall, and customer service is horrible.
