Steve from OW here. The thirty minutes I spent watching this were ten times more enjoyable than being on the actual show, and everything you said was spot on. My first experience on the show was that crucifixion torture challenge. It took ages for them to set that up, and they stuck Mercy and I in a van for about two hours while we waited - they refused to let us go to the bathroom and spoil our big entrance, so I got to sit right next to her as she was forced to squat and pee into a water bottle. We eventually get to go on set and hear the rules of our first big competition, and like you said, the point of the tomatoes in it was supposed to be to distract the people untying their teammates. Luke claimed the tomatoes were rotten and were thus supposed to be soft and painless, but due to the extreme cold, they all froze - Luke accidentally dropped one and when Frank saw the tomato literally bounce back up, he realized how hard they were and immediately signed up to be the person throwing them. Because he was also a MINOR LEAGUE PITCHER growing up. So yeah, tomato fast balls, being launched at my face. Good times. After spending most of my first day on OW in the emergency room getting stitches on my face (yes the scar is still there), I knew the producers had no idea what they were doing. I auditioned bc I’ve been a lifelong big brother and survivor fan but this was nothing like that or any other logical reality show. They went out of their way to edit all strategy out of the show (there was actually a diary room we went into to talk about our gameplay, alliances etc which never even made it onto the show), the competitions were rigged for Frank, the Twitter popularity index was messed up bc several contestants families paid for thousands of spam bot accounts which altered the results, half of us got hurt and received no compensation or actual care for our injuries... but the producers somehow actually proved to be more intelligent than the actual competitors. Epoch had the chance to just outright vote Frank out of the game bc no one would beat him in a comp, but they chose to vote me out instead. Why they added a twist out of nowhere about someone being voted out when everyone else was eliminated because they lost a competition, I’ll never understand... but half of the shows twists were created on the fly. Jeffry’s entire game was based on an alliance with JR which did virtually nothing for him and which every single one of us knew about. No one on that damn show seemed to actually think about winning, and that combined with Luke Tipples awkwardness and the producers lack of a clue made for one of the most hilariously horrible shows in television history. And believe me, it was as bad to be a part of as it was to watch. Thanks for the walk down memory lane, gotta share this with the friends who made the mistake of watching OW for me! On and added fun fact, Frank spent a bulk of his winnings buying a publicist and a website and Beast Mode merchandise because he thought the show was super popular and would be his big break. Gotta love him.

Ok I was thinking about the vote-out all morning and how it didn't make sense, and decided that the most reasonable explanation was that it was added in to compensate for the loss of Charles. With Charles gone they were down one additional player. This also made an odd-numbered group of contestants. The show was paced for a certain number of eliminations before the finale, and I have to assume there was going to be an additional team elimination challenge, taking out two players at once. With Charles gone, they were one player short for that. But they wouldn't have time or presumably money to add a whole new single-elimination challenge. They had an extra "floating" contestant with no convenient way to remove them from the game. Throwing in an in-team vote was the laziest way to take care of that. Basically Charles' injury had a butterfly effect that ruined the whole competition. The vote aspect was good reality tv drama but was nothing like the rest of the competition and was another thing that ruined the illusion of fairness in the game.

Steve D but an actually insane reality show pitch is in here. Contestants sign up to a show where the producers have absolutely no clue what's going on. Like the whole thing is improvised by design. If they sold it like that I would watch BECAUSE it would be such a shit show. In this case though the producers are just as much a part of the show.

I JUST REALIZED: Given the reactions everyone has to leaving and the show is called Opposite Worlds, the plot twist is that the whole point of the show is to leave. So the first person to be eliminated is the actual winner. In which case, the episodes would’ve been better shown in reverse order; the first episode showing Frank as the last to be eliminated, making him the ultimate loser.

Way I could imagine this concept working-- if team Epoch was all HARDCORE survivalist types. Like the folks who go backpacking over mountain ranges for funsies, and team Chronos was all folks working in tech with engineering degrees and sedentary occupations. And then, have challenges designed to have a 'smart' method AND a 'brute force' method. Keep the split house, but make the Epoch side more like a cabin in the woods type thang, with food supplies being wild game meats, fruits, mushrooms, and roots that might be foraged that all require preperation, and Chronos side being all convenience food-- some of it on the healthy side but with all the modern junk available in vast supply, with no kitchen supplies besides a microwave. Oh right, and have someone who actually cares set up safey measures for the challenges.
@eyesofthecervino3366
@eyesofthecervino3366 3 жыл бұрын
I like this. Actually, I love it. Also, as I think about it, the difference in mindset between survivalists and techie/gamer types would go much deeper than "force vs strategy." In a survival situation, risks are not rewarded. You're taught the correct way to pass a knife, to minimize the risk of injury. You're taught to never break sticks with your foot -- you can make do with an injured hand, but it's really hard to get around with an injured foot. Staying alive is good enough, and one slip-up might take even that away from you. Techie logic seems to run the opposite way. Once there are enough safety nets, there's a lot less need for caution, and a lot more competition from aggressively creative people. You're rewarded for taking risks, and punished for letting opportunities slip by you. So maybe, on some level, the real difference being tested here is something like "orderliness vs creativity" or "caution vs aggression" -- which could be a really, really interesting dynamic to see played out in different situations. Way cooler than whatever these yahoos were doing.

Not quite. In total drama, everyone got fucked while the host would be relaxing. Here, its just one team that has that. And some of these games are non competitive, like the 12 second chase one. In total drama, every game was an asshole game but it was evenly hard for most players. Like, no one, fire figther or wimp, would want to get in a barrel with leeeches.

16:09 - Former reality show segment producer here - No, reality shows are never audited for safety. Watching this video was amusing but mostly infuriating because I have worked on multiple reality shows and it reminded me of the productions where the bottom line was "make it cheap" and no other considerations were taken into account. Reality shows are the end result of capitalism co-opting entertainment. They are literally dangerous, cynical, pointless, wasteful, shallow, regressive fluff created for the bare minimum of cost to fill time between commercials. 18:55 - I can assure you that no, I haven't met a show runner who gives two shits about contestants (or crew, really) on a show as low-grade as this. The show runners are the people who invented this stupid, dangerous game. They only care about cashing paychecks and not getting sued. I worked on Celebrity Wife Swap, Marriage Bootcamp (both Celebrity and regular), Cupcake Wars, Garage Sale Wars, Unchained Reactions, and several other one-offs that never got renewed because they caused so much harm to the cast and crew. Really enjoy your content.

@@rfrolicarts Unchained Reaction was probably the worst, in terms of a show that was so underfunded as to be completely stupid and uninteresting while also being very dangerous for both cast and crew. Meant as a spinoff to Mythbusters, the show is ostensibly about having rival teams try to build giant Rube Goldberg machines in a warehouse out of piles of junk in three days and whichever has the coolest one wins. Sounds cool. However, our budget was laughably miniscule. The challenge is to build big impressive Rube Goldberg machines, but Discovery did not want to pay for the rights to say "Rube Goldberg Machine" so they went with "chain reaction machine". The warehouse the showrunner selected was enormous, far too large for the budget, but he wanted it big to house the HUGE machines he was sure the contestants would build. Because the warehouse was so big but the budget so small, the place was underlit at all times because it is difficult to light a place as big as a warehouse on the cheap. This meant tripping hazards were everywhere and crew/cast injuries from trips were extremely common. Furthermore, the piles of junk were pitifully weak because again, no real funding. I think the showrunner's assumption was that we'd be able to get junk like old fridges and washing machines and chains for free, but that simply isn't the case. Junk yards charge for stuff like that. Further, they didn't factor in the cost of transporting the junk to the warehouse, or a crew of loaders to handle the junk on either end. Also, tools; showrunner didn't budget for tools to put these machines together. I think this idiot presumed that tools don't cost much, as real "What could a miter saw possibly cost? $10?" sort of thing. And all of this is before you get to the actual show. The teams were divided up by color, but instead of traditional opposing colors like red and blue, the showrunner settled on green and yellow for teams; two colors which look very similar in an underlit warehouse AND are indistinguishable by some people who are colorblind, which it turned out multiple cast and crew members were. Now these machines are being designed and built on-the-fly by folks from a variety of backgrounds. You'd have one team of motorcycle builders, another of animatronic puppeteers, another of literal rocket scientists, and so on. However, a lot of these folks are NOT structural engineers, so these devices they were constructing, on a deadline, were very slap-dash and not under the supervision of anyone with safety in mind. There simply wasn't a budget for that. So you'd have some team try to use an old fridge as a counterweight on some see-saw, and it would go flying off during testing, nearly crushing people or busting holes in the walls of the warehouse. At least two episodes ended anticlimatically when a team's machine destroyed itself before the deadline but without any time to rebuild. A lot of the machines simply did not work and were big let downs, but Adam Savage would have to sell like something interesting is happening. We had one hospitalization of a team member when a large sharp piece of metal fell off their machine and sliced up his leg really badly. Another dumb thing was the rival teams they invented; I recall one episode was Rocket Scientists vs Special Effects Artists, with the unsubtle idea about "who will end up being smarter?" Except, the scientists are literal scientists, not rocket engineers or builders, whereas the SFX team are builders, it's their job. So the rocket scientists look embarassingly bad the entire time and the VFX artists look better...but then again, they have so little to work with and their ideas are so big, that they overdesign their machine and it fails to work on display day. So the end result is two terrible disappointments. Early on I complained loudly about how underfunded this whole project was and what a trainwreck it was going to be without more resources, and the showrunner would literally tell me and my fellow producers "Y'all need to make some miracles happen! You're my little miracle makers! That's why I hired you." We did not make miracles happen. Instead, we made a horrible disappointment happen. At least I got to meet Adam and Jamie.

It's on a big English country estate, they constantly wave around "hints" that he's a prince, and these girls who are not given the allowance of a simple google search start tearing each other apart not for love but to become a literal princess because they deceive them all into thinking he's royalty. They should have 1) Put people more inclined mentally in the "future" house and more physically able people in the "past" house to begin, 2) filmed in the summer in a place with little humidity, 3) make pros and cons for each house. For example, those in the future have to eat dehydrated food or rations or something, like an astronaut would. Those in the past get fresh ingredients to eat and attempt to make food with. Everything in the future could be purely efficient too, so it would be less luxurious and more having to make certain sacrifices to keep up the efficiency of the future. It will probably still be favorable to the past, but it will be closer to equal that way. There could also be incentive to switch where your team stays after winning a challenge if you get a different reward for each place. What I mean is, for example if you chose to be in the past, then you would get a hint as to what the next challenge is and be able to prepare. If you chose to be in the future, then you could call and chat with family or friends. And the prize for each will be different every challenge. 4) SAFETY PRECAUTIONS OBVIOUSLY! HOW DID THEY FUCK THAT ONE UP?? 5) make the challenges half physical, half mental, and some with overlapping qualities of both. Knowledge of history and evolution should help you in these challenges. Again: No one should be in harm's way for any of these challenges.

Where the heck were you when they were planning this show?!?! Except then we wouldn't have gotten this awesome video.. Well now we need a season two but you need to be there or better yet, make your own and act like you've never heard of this one or something. Be like , "I was thinking like a Total Drama vibe, but more humane and in the future a little bit. Like a Total Drama: Time Swappy Thing or Time Force!!" And yea that's what I was thinking, there needs to be incentive to want to swap, no one wants to freeze their butt off for free! Same with the other stuff, except I'd make it more around mid-spring-ish so that it can be cold but sometimes warm. Change when they put the actual seasons out too for a weather challenge.. Maybe they just threw the show together to get it out before someone else or something and paid off safety people, because there is absolutely no reason reason for the lack of safety, honestly even the thought of safety really. She said the mats weren't even big enough to even be ready for any kind impact really!! I honestly wonder how they felt when they were editing this for tv..

The closest I know to this show, in terms of just torturing the contestants, is the Japanese 'Za Gaman'. It is very old, 80's/90's old, and absolutely insane. Basically, a bunch of college kids were put through a series of increasingly more dangerous and humiliating 'challenges'. One of these included the infamous 'starvation booth', which is exactly as the name states: two kids were locked in a see-through cube-like booth placed by a river. They are to be held there 24 hours without eating. If they can refuse the food that will be offered them after they have been starving for close to a whole day, they win. If they eat, they lose. It actually gets worse: Given the closeness to the river and the fact that the flooring was sheer concrete, the booth was terribly cold. Then, the food they were offered was cold noodles introduced into slots...so that they inevitably fell on the floor. Yes, these poor starving, cold numbed and by now hardly coherent boys had to scoop their noodles from the floor and eat them! While the host cackled manically and let them know what LOSERS they were for not hanging in there a little longer. Starve like men! These kids went from being really happy-go-lucky to sniveling, shivering messes, unable to shake and crying. And I am not sure 'starvation booth' was even the worst 'challenge'. Another one is close to water boarding: they'd bury the poor guy all the way to the neck, by the sea so that the incoming waves would submerge his head for quite a while. Or they would use the same setting but would pour pepper into the eyes and mouth and in order to make sure they didn't close the eyes, a 'Clockwork Orange' like device was used! In yet another, they tied them to a water wheel...and yes, the wheel was working. But perhaps the most infamous challenge was the electroshocking one...Here, two guys were sat across from each other with electrodes attached to their naked chests and took turns taking shocks! I can't recall if they shocked each other or if someone from the show did it, either way, the voltage would climb each turn until they would writhe in pain. The first person to tap out, lost.

@@ThatDurre You're not entirely wrong. The host at the starvation booth, in particular, was enjoying himself way too much, laughing and cracking jokes at the poor kids who hadn't eaten in 24 hours. "Za Gaman" came out at a time when non-American entertainment was not readily available in the States; it became known because a late night show host- I forgot who it was- found a VHS tape and decided to do a skit about it. His first reaction was, "Is this for real?", and who can blame him. Nor was this show unique either. Other Japanese "prank" shows around that time included staging a terrorist attack, in which a poor guy thought he was being gunned down; toilet seats that were dragged out to sea and massage chairs that were tossed down snowy slopes; and in one particularly egregious example, an escape artist who was made to think he was about to burn to death, while his family watched.

I had a similar experience watching the Syfy channel while sick, except it turned out to be reruns of a supernatural procedural that called itself “Friday The 13th: The Series” but had nothing in common with the movies other than its production company. It was like a bootleg X-Files except they couldn’t come up with a bunch of different monster plots for the main characters to investigate, so every episode was “one-off character finds a magical artifact that does something they want in exchange for murders”. I, personally, would commit a magical murder to get a retrospective like this about it.

When your reality tv show that's supposed to reflect society basically just ends up being a metaphor for privilege... The person who won was someone who was always set up to win. He was set up to win both because he never experienced a lack of resources and also because all the tests selected for things he was good at. The people who started on the Epoch side almost only ever experienced scarcity and this continual exposure was rooted partially in the fact that they started from a place of disadvantage. Each time they lost it made it more likely for them to lose because they would be worn down physically, and the challenges were almost exclusively physical. Almost like how people who are born into poverty often struggle to escape it, not because they're lazy or stupid but because they fundamentally lack necessary resources...

When Charles got tackled off of the platform, for a *moment* i was completely unbothered. i was like, yeah that's the move. avoid the taser thing entirely by just knocking your opponent directly into the water. perfect. seen that on plenty of game shows. . . . . . . and then THERE WASN'T ANY WATER!!!!!! and i was like oh . . . *fuck* this show is going to be *seriously* awful.

You better believe that the show didn't pay for Charle's surgery, either. I feel for him so badly as someone who shattered an ankle and severed my Achilles tendon a few years back. You never really recover, it affects you heavily for the rest of your life. I still wear a leg brace and can't work in most places. Having to cover the expenses yourself while still injured is hell without help.

that is infuriating to find out. I guess contestants signed a waver for that kind of a thing, but the show was hot garbage and unethical to begin with so you'd think the least they could do is pay for his medical bills that were caused by their shoddy production. I'm surprised he didn't sue tbh even if just to pay off the bills - I think there'd be a case there. the losers didn't even get an inexpensive simple reward after having dealt with being on this kind of a show. I mean, nobody's surprised and that's reality TV for you but I hope the guy is doing alright now. wishes for the best to you too, OP.

If they didn't I would sue hard. The fact the cushions weren't in place is textbook negligence.

@@washedblue according to Steve, the guy pelted with tomatoes (check the pinned comment chain for this), they just didn't think of it in time. Another comment mentioned the statute of limitations there for personal injury claims runs out after a year and aside from that, the company producing OW shut down shortly after the end of season 1

I feel like knocking over the maze should count as a loss. It was supposed to be a maze not dominoes. A dog show contestant would definitely lose for doing that.
