That poor engineer gotta be thinking "damn, how many angles does this man want to document my suffering from?"

Greatly documented and narrated there Austin.Perhaps 2 powered unit's rather than slugs would've been better! Great job by the engineer and you!!

Tom Ok The slugs have traction motors (also used for Dynamic Brakes), they just don’t have a Diesel Engine or Genset in them. They get power from the units that have Diesels and Gensets in them, and use the excess power at lower speeds to provide extra motive power. The Diesel engines and generators will produce more power than the motors in the engine can use at low movement speed, so the additional motors and axels help use it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slug_(railroad)?wprov=sfti1

Hi Austin. Well narrated video and very informative as to what "slugs" are, and other info. I always thought it weird the way the prime movers are at a fixed speed, whether the train is limping along at 5 MPH or 70 MPH.
@ralgith5 жыл бұрын
Too bad he got what slugs are wrong. Slugs don't have a prime mover, but they have TRACTION MOTORs, so they're still providing pulling power. They just need to get their electricity from the prime mover (which is just a generator) of another engine. That's also why the prime movers are at a fixed speed, they're just a large generator. The engines aren't diesels, despite common parlance. Instead, they're diesel ELECTRICS. The prime mover is used to generate electricity, which is then transferred to the traction motors on the trucks. These traction motors can also be put into a dynamic breaking mode, where the motors are actually generators and the electricity generated by them is dissipated by a massive bank of resistors inside the dynamic break blister. So, while is is possible for a slug to possess dynamic brakes, it isn't the only thing they possess.

#1 slug does have dynos....CORRECT! but it also has traction motors that feed of the power unit (called the mother)….#2 this is why the invented sanders....either they are out or their sandbox is wet....WHICH happened to me once....

Great Video buddy !! Excellent narration. Do you miss H76? Was a sad day when NS rerouted DL's consist. I don't get to enjoy DL trains though East Stroudsburg everyday like they use to run. Keep up the good work Austin. I've watched several of your videos and you do an amazing job ! Stay safe my friend and " Keep on Chasing"

I love the old bells at some crossings, depends on where you live. CN in WI has replaced alot of them that are only activated on approach. Does that one crossing have bells only and no lights? Thats rare to see.

Didn't notice them sanding until the crossing but it was only on 2 units... I think it was more just a function of not enough HP.

@AustinTrainsOfficial5 жыл бұрын
Robert Russnogle - You can hear them squeal for a short time at 5:38. They had plenty of sand so there wasn’t much slipping going on.
@robertrussnogle74495 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply. Forgive my ignorance but if they had plenty of sand and grip why were they at a crawl?
@AustinTrainsOfficial5 жыл бұрын
Robert Russnogle - Sand can only do so much, even while its running they can’t apply too much throttle or the wheels will slip anyway. So they have to take it at a throttle setting that it will grip, in this case it was a pretty low setting lol

Awesome Video Austin! Im used to seeing scenes like this when the NYS&W has the same problems going past my house, and they are using EX-NS SD70M-2s! I remember one istance where the NYS&W actually stalled and they had to bring a locomotive down from the yard to rescuse, thus resulting in a rare spectical kzbin.info/www/bejne/on6oXnerrN90aLM
