There was a guy that committed suicide on the tracks where I work. The train stopped as quickly if not faster than this one. It took them 3 hours to investigate the accident. CSX railroad police came out and had the engineer test the horns, lights and bell even though they knew it was a suicide. It was terrible, the guy was crossing the tracks with a friend when the train was coming. At the last second he suddenly turned around and ran onto the tracks and was struck.

Train brakes are very effective. A mile long train booking 65mph will take a nearly mile to stop in full emergency, the whole train length. A car travelling on a highway at the same speed could take 12-15 times the length of the car itself. Which has the best braking ability?

In the years when I was in law enforcement, I always, always, was told by driver of the vehicle hit, the crossing signals were not operating when the accident occurred. One fool even told me the train crew came to the crossing and turned the signals on! Of course, I always charged the person who was hit by the train. The best one was right after a hurricane, one of the inspectors for an electric company was hit on the tracks at an unguarded crossing. He said the train was not blowing its whistle. Another inspector arrived to say he had been talking to the other inspector, heard a train horn, then the connection was lost.

He saved the police & NTSB from many hours of trying to figure out what went wrong. There is a difference between right & wrong & making a mistake & when someone has clear proof of this , it is honorable to let others know of this proof so that we can all learn the truth about how mistakes cause accidents. We can learn from those mistakes. The truck driver make a judgement error & ended up on the tracks while the lights were flashing giving a warning that a train was coming. I do not know what the driver was thinking or doing, but he starts to cross the tracks while the lights are clearly flashing & the bells are sounding & the train s also blasting its horn, stops, & than starts backing up. He just wasn't fast enough in getting off the tracks. He needs to take responsibility for his mistake, learn from it, help pay for any damages, & move on.

ALWAYS!. barry. Even if train derails ( unlikely with these 195t locos) you still can't stop it. In Australia a truck went into the side of the 2nd loco ( 130t) of a freight train doing 70 MPH, train derails, & he ended up wearing the 3rd loco + a decent proportion of 40 or 50 odd freight cars. Took days to find his body.Train drivers OK, lead loco seperated & did not derail & in Melbourne twice at the same crossing a 21t tram & 30t tram collided with trucks that failed to give way. the trams derailed & won't be repaired ( older trams anyway) but no passenger seriously injured & both trucks lost their loads creating a sight to behold. Dozens of beer kegs, everywhere from one truck & soil from an overturned dump truck in the 2nd collision. Resault, about = (despite the lost loads dominating the scene) & these were only trams/trollys/streetcars hit by heavy trucks. AT LEAST THE BANDIT CAN DELIVER THE BEER WITHOUT SPILLING IT EVERYWHERE?

@jovetj6 жыл бұрын
Crossing bells and train bells are for pedestrians. They aren't intended to warn vehicles, especially at a distance required to be able to stop in time. The lights should have been enough warning for him. Since the video does not show the truck approaching the crossing, I've tried to hear whether the truck stops for the flashing lights. But it's too hard for me to tell. *frank55025* The cantilever lights were on. The video doesn't show them very brightly because they're not aimed at the camera-they're aimed at the road. And cameras are not perfect, so what the camera sees may not be what the human eye would see. If you can't be absolutely sure the tracks are clear and no trains are coming, then don't cross the tracks. If you can't be absolutely sure that your vehicle will completely fit on the other side of the crossing, then don't cross the tracks. I also thought, at first, he was looking to make a left turn. But I'm skeptical he needed to pull that far forward to be able to make left turn there.

If you watch closely from :47 on and look at the overhead crossing signals above the road, they are actually NOT illuminating. I don't know if that means they also weren't illuminating on the Peterbilt driver's side, but when the driver said he did not see them he may not have been lying. He also may not have heard the train approaching over the sound of his own motor and with the cab windows up, and the right side would have been hard to see anything approaching with the angle that the road is to the railroad tracks. It isn't a 90 perpendicular intersection; that driver would have had to have x-ray vision and been able to see through the B pillar of that cab to see the train.

I know right rail crossing lights were flashing that means stop it clearly shows that the truck was to blame for what he did because he did not stop

Yeah, and trains can’t turn off the tracks, everyone seems to forget that.

@@megandunnett7900--When I was a little girl (post WW II Baby Boomer), there was a lot more train traffic, especially from the coal mines to the steel plants of Pennsylvania. There was even passenger service from the tiny little depot in our farming community to the "Big Cities" (Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre) via connections in the larger towns. I think I was about four when I asked my father why trains had to run on tracks when cars didn't. To his credit, he gave an explanation of how trains can't steer like cars do that I truly understood. Now, if a FOUR year old can understand that, why can't a supposed adult??
