I read National Geographic since I was a child. It taught me many interesting things. Now I'm watching NG online. What a privilege. Thanks, NG for your excellent videos. It's very easy to avoid shark attacks. Just don't swim in places where most attacks occur. Sharks are necessary predators for keeping the species balance. And they're beautiful. They must be protected.

I think if everyone had a healthy fear of great whites (and sharks in general), meaning they were concerned enough about them that they would monitor local conditions (fish migrations, whale carcasses, etc.), like those things mentioned in this video that indicate a greater possibility of the presence of sharks in the area, the number of attacks would diminish. We humans tend to become complacent far too easy.

As sad as these incidents are, we need to keep in mind that overall, not many people die of shark attacks, considering the amount of people entering the water every year. When we decide to swim in the ocean, we are entering their realm, and need be aware that at the end of the day, sharks are wild animals. They play a very important role for the balance of our oceans and need to be protected as well as possible. Please dont demonize these awesome creatures because they very rarely make a mistake.

The fact that we get free documentaries on KZbin by National Geographic is truly a gift. 👍👍👍 By the way, may I remind you the fact that Slavery, Colonialism and Colonization are all evil things done and benefited by evildoers. Here in Singapore, a tiny island with 6 million souls lives like sardines in a can, where else in nearby vast bountiful Australia which is ten thousand times 10,000 bigger with a mere 27 million inhabitants.. A similar situation in tiny and packed Japan, which is running out of space and land. Empty or not, they know it's time to eat because they're hungry, most likely. For all we know, her just being in the water is causing them to go in that direction. 99.9% of sharks don't eat people. in most cases, they take a bite of a per because they think they're another animal (like a seal), and then don't continue since humans don't taste good to them. the only time they may actively eat a person is if they're starving and desperate.

Omg, it is not that hard to figure out! Sharks are Apex predators. The ocean is their domain. Sharks do NOT see a human and think “oh, that’s a human, they live on land, better not mess with them”. Instead, they see prey. Food. It’s commonsense. They attack because they can. The question we should be asking is, “Why wouldn’t a shark attack a human?”.

The number of deaths due to sharks is very low. Globally, 5 people died in 2022 due to sharks, 9 in 2021, 10 in 2020. 24 deaths in 3 years vs approximately 9 million fatalities globally due to car accidents. But nobody thinks twice about getting in a car. Looking at another hobby, because driving is not optional in many places. Its estimated that about 700 people die from falling off horses in the US every year. Someone did a deep dive into the numbers in California about 8 years ago when they were in the midst of a spike of shark attacks and looking at surfers, who are most at risk, there was 1 attack for every 17 million surf days. You surf one time you have to be really unlucky to be that person. If you go 300 days a year for 40 years, your odds of course get much worse. Some other things they found during that study period, scuba divers went to hospital 6897 times for diving related decompression sickness for every trip due to a shark bite and 1817 people drowned in the ocean for every person killed by a shark. But the media ignores drowning deaths unless its someone famous.

Exactly. We are going into their yards, their homes. They aren’t coming to our yards, our homes. If humans respect the oceans & the creatures that call the ocean homes, maybe there would be fewer attacks. If humans would educate themselves about the best conditions to venture into the ocean/seas, maybe the number of attacks would decrease. Well, IMO that is.

Pardon my black humour, but basically, sharks keep doing what they usually do: the job of regulating the population🤷♀️ But honestly, 60+ attacks on people over a few years cannot be compared to the numbers of sharks killed by humans.
