After more than a decade in the making, Australia has signed a historic free trade agreement with India.
Curtin University political analyst Professor Joe Siracusa says the agreement will “open the door to the biggest country in the world”.
“It will open different kinds of supply lines. Australia has heaps that India wants - lithium, coal and lentils,” he told Sky News Australia.

India-Australia ties needs to be viewed seperate from Russia-Ukraine war. Bringing matters happening between 3rd and 4th country will only make things way more complicated. US has no embassy in Iran, does that mean other western countries have no relationship with iran? India-China relations went down, so did the west cut its relationship with China because of it? Did NATO asked for world opinion before expanding in eastern europe? West should not expect others to "pick" side for problem emerged from their own reckless actions. India-West relationship cannot be one-way, if the west can prioritize its interest according to situations, why not other countries?

@Ululu Kululu dude are you really saying that? I can imagine you are not a well read person about history, neither Indian nor Global. Colonization has never ever benifited any country. Do you know why China is successful, it is because for most of its history, China was independent. The same USA and Canada developed because it has close ties and direct border with USA. And even if we agree with your scenario, the countries who are talking about will be allies of the British and not India. Before you appreciate British rule of India, If you are an Indian, ask you grandparents how it was living under the British. Yes we had bad leaders, but Independence was a requirement. The very fact that we, if you are Indian, if not than, me can use this site and right peacefully without any fear, it is because India is independent. And trust me, today India is a sort of powerful ally for every country, including China. No country wants to hemper their relations with us because at this very moment, India is the most desirable ally in the world. You want development? Start working towards it. Wait for 10 years, you will see where India would stand. The world order is about to change, We all are seeing the start of it. In the meantime we are sitting at home having lost our jobs for no reason other than forceful vaccination of a drug that has been developed using a process that raises both ethical, moral and religious consciences.. We have been forgotten and treated like dirt with zero rights. No income with mortgage and bills to pay, and kicked out of employment. Cannot travel out of the country to secure employment elsewhere and cannot work in the country either. Meanwhile, Businesses have stalled, hurting with labour shortages and empty food shelves for lack of workers, amid soaring labour costs, which translates to inflation prices to customers. Another own goal. Who makes these thoughtless, unscrutinised policies?

What do you do with a trusted partner that goes the wrong path. You can only advise that partner. On the flip side US has been a partner that has historically been unreliable as far as India is concerned. There has been good improvement in relationship with west, but India cannot afford to burn its bridges with its partners. Now Raw Material On Massive Scale Can Be Exported To India Due to End On Tarrif Exports in Free Trade Agreement And Finished Product Can Be Sold In Australia And World Wide. Which Will Booste Australia Economy Massively And also Going To Help India To Some Extent. Because India Can save A Lot On Natural Resources By Importing From Australia. Increased prices once again for Australian consumers! Local demand for Australian product goes up if no protections are in place to ensure the domestic supply and as usual we have to compete for our home grown products. Great for producers, not so much for consumers. We pay the price every time we enter into these agreements with the price of meat being a perfect example. The massive prices aren't due to supply, it is due to the Supermarkets picking over the scraps left on our shores after overseas orders are filled. You can't blame producers for chasing top dollar for their product, but you can blame the government for not protecting the consumer as other countries do when they enter in to these agreements.

@@user-ld8nx3fn1c If as per your claim tariff on some aussie produces exported to India were arbitrarily raised, that does not imply that other goods and produces exported to India at that time enjoyed zero tariff. After this agreement 85% of aussie export items will enjoy zero tariff, that completely exempted from tariff and there will be no scope of arbitrary imposing any tariff on those 85% of items without breaking away from the bilateral agreement. Also Australia has very high GDP per capita and median household income compared to India. And in India, farmers have the lowest median household income and farmers constitute 60% of the country's employed labor force, implying India is largely an agricultural country with most of its farmers having small agricultural land and hence low income, unlike Australia. So India has valid concerns about cheaper food produces that Indian farmers mostly produce, being exported to India throwing large chunk of India's agricultural population out of jobs which might lead to violence, anarchy and degeneration of law and order, ultimately collapsing the Indian state and the system. So India has valid reasons to be sensitive about protection of its farmers whose earning pattern is completely different from aussie farmers as they own small farming land (remember India is half the size of Australia in terms of area but its population is over45 times bigger than Australia which kind of explains why average Indian farmer has tiny farmland compared to average Aussie farmer). So if Australians buy from finished industrial goods from India and India buys more minerals from Australia under this FTA, not just Australia and India both will be able to reduce their dependence on China, also many of agricultural workforce taking up jobs in factories will reduce their dependence on agriculture as profession in India leading to reduction in their apprehension that import of food produces by India from abroad will throw them out of their job and on top of that, Indian rural farmers turning into urban industrial workforce will increase their earnings, improve their living standards and consumption for them to consume more produces exported to India- in such a scenario, aussie farmers' export to India will rise. This FTA will slowly turn the vicious cycle in India into a virtuous cycle that is win-win for both India and Australia.

At least it is nothing like the so-called 'Free Trade' that the British imposed upon India - involving the greatest looting of a country ever and genocide of tens of millions both by suppressing their work and income and by starvation. I have been telling this story to the British in this time of War in Ukraine and sanctions on Russian oligarchs - given India's stance on Russia. Robert Clive returned from Bengal with his 'loot' [the Hindi word for plunder] as the richest [non-monarch] man in Europe (Open University online estimates his 'loot' at £100 million at today's rates). His East India Co. mafiosi henchmen became the new super-rich 'nobs' (from nawabs/'nabobs') and often bought up parliamentary seats - the Pitt family made their fortune looting India. Meanwhile, 1/3 of the population of Bengal Province [inc. modern Orissa and Bihar] - some 10 million died in the Great Bengal Famine of 1770 due to the rapacity of the Brits. Richard Becher [relative of William M. Thackeray] had predicted this 'Ruin of Bengal' which had been the richest province in Mughal India [which had 27% of global GDP before British occupation]. The Ruin of Bengal also led to economic crisis in Europe as dozens of banks collapsed in days as looted Indian wealth dried up for a while and Adam Smith had to delay his 'Wealth of Nations'. As research published by Columbia UP showed in 2018, the British stole some US$45 Trillion from India over two centuries which financed the Industrial Revolution and much else in Britain and its white settler colonies [see Jason Hickel's article on Al Jazeera online which also discusses how Britain lies about this history]. They also killed tens of millions of Indians by exporting India's foodgrains for British Food Security and profit including the setting up of Death Camps which gave less starvation rations than Buchenwald for hard labour to victims of the 1877 Madras Famine killing 94% of inmates - 7 million in total died [whilst record amounts of exports of Indian foodgrains lowered prices for Westerners]. George Orwell wrote (The Road to Wigan Pier) that 100 million Indians must be forced to the edge of starvation so that the British can live the way that they do. The British also deindustrialized India which had dominated manufacturing exports in textiles. H.H. Wilson wrote in 1853 that Manchester and Paisley could not have risen, even with steam power without the systematic elimination of competition from cheaper and superior Indian handloom cottons. This included the breaking of weavers' fingers and the cutting off of thumbs of weavers of Dhaka Muslin [a highly-prized elite cloth which which cost many times the price of silk] as well as tariff barriers and creating a Captive Market for British goods. Governor General William Bentinck wrote that the plains of India are bleached with the bones of her weavers. In the 1790s English experts declared Indian Wootz the best steel in the world and Sheffield copied its techniques but Indian steelmaking was stifled to suppress competition. India had been a major shipbuilder and continued to be in the early British-rule - the oldest seaworthy ship in the Royal Navy is HMS Trincomalee built in 1817 by an Indian company in Bombay of superior Indian teak. But soon afterwards, British shipbuilders stopped shipbuilding competition in India. As Shashi Tharoor tells us in Inglorious Empire, Indian engineers showed that they could design and build locomotives and thus the Brits stopped such manufacturing as well. Even during the 1939-45 war [when British Empire admirer Hitler wanted to make Ukraine and Russia Germany's 'India'], the British refused US plans to make aircraft factories in India (to fight Japan) as they did not want an independent India postwar to compete. After the war the British [and the postwar USA - following George Kennan's strategy of holding Asia down as poor compared to the West - whilst giving Marshall Aid to redevelop Europe] refused to help India build a steelmill at Bhilai saying stick to your traditional raw materials! The Brits created the First World/Third World schism and tried to maintain it. It was the USSR that stepped in and helped build Bhilai. They also helped build India's first Institute of Technology at Kharagpur. This - not arms sales is what led to the strong Indo-Soviet and then Indo-Russian partnership and friendship! In 1971 the USA and UK sent warships to support the Pakistani dictator perpetrating the largest genocide since 1945, killing 3 million in East Bengal. It was the Soviet Navy that warned off the USS Enterprise and Soviet threats to attack China stopped Mao from attacking India in support of Pakistan.

@@sutapasbhattacharya9471 that's right. India has a lot of great people, much better than Australians - it would be racist to say otherwise. The plan is to fool the cleverest Indians into thinking Australia is the land of milk and honey, whilst me and my small band of cronies make massive bonuses paying them slave labour wages, whilst they live in appalling conditions. I'm sure India will still be better at everything than everyone else even when the best people leave.

Our export to India will be dictated by our ability to compete with the local producer's, that means that the outcome will be that we are going to import more than we export & what we do manage to export will be in the luxury range of goods. Think about it, the cost of an Australian mango vs an Indian one? Or maybe we'll be selling them grains due to Russia & Ukraine not exporting due to the war. So, how are our grain producers going to cope with the current three fold increase in fertilizer price along with the rise in fuel costs? This done deal sounds a lot like pre election window dressing designed to appease the non thinking partisan voters. The reality is that neither side of the political divide is any better than the other. If it was a matter of choice of disease's instead of political parties, it'd be like, your options are terminal cancer or aids.

Here in india we can buy mango at very cheap rate at only 100 ₹ /kg that is very good at nearest store. If you will sell it at 500 ₹/kg then no one will buy that. In dairy products Amul and Mother dairy are so popular. Amul is 8th largest dairy producer in the world . Cereals and Milk powder are not popular in Indian society except just some areas of Delhi or Mumbai.

@@atrismith7487 India is still a closed economy There are not too much countries having free trade agreement with india You dont realise the opportunity Australins has got until you see it directly . Wait for some time .. If it is a fair game , Both countries will gain mutually . But i think there wont be more opportuniuty for australian farm products , since a big percentage of indians are poor farmers . The government cant import those items in a free trade agreement .. I think India and australia should work together to in natural dissasters like Wild fires in Australia and Floods in India . We should share whatever resources we have when we need it badly ..

The Free Trade agreement with India will be a huge mistake. Look what NAFTA , North American Free Trade Agreement, did to the USA..it shifted our manufacturing base to other countries where the labor will work for a much lower wage. Our country used to proudly make quality products, now it has shifted to Asia, Mexico or China; instead, we have to depend upon another country, our enemy really, for nearly every consumer good we require or want, without quality. We have become a nation of purchasers instead of a nation of manufacturing.
