@@poppysdaddi we bought trees that were about 12 inches tall and they bore a few fruit the next year. one had 5 and the other had 7. the trees were still quite small, maybe 30 inches. sadly we left that property in Kurrajong NSW, but we have planted 10 trees, a variety of colours at our new home. cant wait to harvest them....they cost $8 for about 5 at Harris Farm Markets.

emmymadeinjapan bush tucker=bush (primitive/foraged) foods. those grubs are a type of caterpillar that lives in the roots of a bush in Australia. They're supposed to taste something like egg. They're one of the stereotypical "strange traveller foods" in Australia like haggis is for Scotland.

Sorry Emmy! I should have explained. As previous comments suggest, Bush Tucker is a term for native foods that have been foraged, most of which have been cultivated for thousands of years by native Australians who have a spiritual connection to the land. In modern Australia, we have a variety of uses for native plants and fruits, and it is common to eat Kangaroo as well. Here is a link to Wikipedia for more information. Hope that helps. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bush_tucker

According to Wikipedia, they grow wild near the Queensland and NSW coasts. They haven't been commercially cultivated until fairly recently, due to "rising demand". Before now, they were considered bushfood. You may start to see them in your local markets within the next few years, if not already. Check around, you might find some.

I live in New England and have a standard lime tree I keep inside. I've wanted to try and graft a finger lime onto it for a while now. I also have a small Buda's hand that hasn't fruited for me yet. If you have a sunny window for the winter, and room to put it outside in the summer you could have your own finger lime. You should check out Loggees Greenhouse in Danielson CT some time. They cary a lot of tropical editable plants.

emmymadeinjapan you can grow outside as long as the temps are above freezing! And best way to maximise light is to stand it on foil or paint an area of brilliant white paint beneath container! It doesn’t need to be inside - it can actually do worse for the plant to keep citrus inside 👍🏼

We tasted one on the tour and it was my favorite of everything we tasted. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to take one home but I'm keeping my eyes peeled with the hope of finding one locally so I can taste it on camera.

My family gets something called a blue apron box which gives you all the ingredients to two brand new and different recipes every week (its like a weekly subscription box but you have to make the meals yourself) and it gave us finger limes to squeeze onto steak and avocado tacos! It added such a fun bright flavor!

xXCHALAXx I was actually watching the ABC or SBS the other day as I do a lot and I saw a special on these I think that it may have been actually been on one of the Taste Of Landline specials that the ABC is doing at the moment. It was very interesting to see how these are grown and produced and that also to most countries that these must be sent frozen because of the potential risk of fruit fly even though the finger limes do not carry fruit fly. It was a very interesting special on these little fruits that I am yet to try. If you get a chance to watch this special do as it may still be available on I-view 😀

These remind me so much of caviar I'd imagine you could use them in or on sushi in place of masago for a citrusy twist on a maki roll or something. I think it would be lovely paired with fish from the description of the flavor!

I'm Australian and we grow them at school and use them in our cooking classes. The kids don't often like the sourness of them however, but we add a few "beads" to different desserts or fruit dips :)

love that you showed our beautiful finger limes! They come in clear, yellow, ruby red and green ....so so beautiful! I love to use them in salad dressing. Fold them through a mousse or cheesecake for a bit of texture and wonderful spurts of acidity. I decorate with them, on anything you would like texture and a lemon or lime burst. Ohh I’m so happy I found this! Em would you like to taste more Australian bush tucker like strawberry gum, lemon myrtle, wattle seeds, and there are so many more.....happy to send you a blurb on how to use them for eg, strawberry gum pannacotta is delicious! lemon Myrtle has a distinct lemon flavour. i use the leaves as a bed under fish and the powdered lemon leaf with mountain pepper as a seasoning or in desserts or salad dressing. Wattle seeds are roasted and therefore have a coffee type flavour....delicious in desserts or as a drink. Wild Rosella flowers (or Native Hibiscus) can be jellied and served in a syrup....they're beautiful placed in a champagne flute and topped with champagne. they add a sweet fruitiness to the champagne cocktail and then the rosella can be eaten like a sweet. i don't use the other programmes so i don't know where you get people to mail things but if you let me know, I'd love to send them to you and see you try our native spices and foods. for everyone else.... herbies spices delivers OS if you'd like to try some. there are no fresh foods but there are interesting and delicious spices you can try. i don't know if you can private message on youtube but Id happily post some off to anyone thats interested.

Too bad I moved from the bay area in California were it could possibly grow them. I now live in northern Nevada in the high mountain desert, so I would need a greenhouse to grow them. Gets pretty cold here and snows in the winter.

I personally like to munch them up but my mom likes to do the following with them when they are big enough. 1. Take out the little spheres and sprinkle them over salmon or other sea foods. 2. Sprinkled over an avocado. 3. Add the little spheres to a drink like tea, lemonade or lemon and lime soda.
