Australia's Prime Minister Julia Gillard has confirmed that she is stepping down after she lost a party vote on the leadership of the Labor Party. She was defeated by Kevin Rudd who won 57 votes to 45, in a leadership ballot of Labor lawmakers. The long and bitter rivalry between the two politicians might now come to an end as the former prime minister has said she will leave politics.
"I will shortly leave from this parliament to see the governor-general on this matter. In accordance with the pledge I gave earlier today, I announce that I will not recontest the federal electorate of Lawler at the forthcoming federal election," Mrs Gillard said. Report by Sarah Kerr.

Rudd was a first term PM, it was ridiculous she tried to take over. She’s the reason Labor we’re only in for two terms.

Karma doesn't come any better than this, backstabbing Rudd and take his position only to be kicked out of politics years later and replaced by the same guy. Her run as a PM started with a backstab to someone that trusted her, you might as well knock on karma's door and leave a bag of flaming pop.

I completely agree with you, though i am glad of Kevin Rudd's return i don't think beating down another politician out of your own ignorance is okay whats so ever. It's time the public realized that she did a pretty okay job and like you said considering the sexism that came her way i would say she did a pretty darn good job.

got us through the GFC, demolished work choices and took a stand on man made climate change, just to name a few, I would have voted Labor if Julia or Kevin led them what are the coalitions policies, all I've gotten is a dial up NBN, sending the boats to Indonesia who won't accept them and planting trees to reduce tonnes of carbon that according to Mr Abbott are weightless

You should know how to read the signs ? Interests rates have been cut again , and it looks likely of another cut in the near future .Labor have stuffed this country even blind freddy can see that except the rusted on Labor voters . Australia racked up the third amount of debt per person in the last 12 months behind Spain and Slovakia because they have over spent .
@barneyrubble9661
@barneyrubble9661 11 жыл бұрын
No I'm saying they have over spent !! We have just been through a boom time and China were buying our resources in record numbers !! this Government has stuffed our economy ! they have spent money, they haven't received. Business revenue has dropped ,and what ever Government voted in will have a hard time avoiding a recession because Labor has mismanaged . You are also missing the fact interest rates are at an all time low, telling us there is something seriously wrong with the economy.

Fokker TISM A very simplistic answer from an apparently simplistic individual. I believe that Julia threatened too many insecure "men". She has shown a lot of class - something that is sadly lacking amongst politicians from all sides of politics.

NBN. Are you serious??? You clearly do not live in a rural area. I can post photos in our (rural) area where Telstra now do repairs to 'underground' copper telecom' cables above ground to save money, prior to installation of NBN fibre optic cables. Roll out of NBN in our area is estimated to be in 2022. You are either living in a major city or a box?!

I think she did a pretty good job.. it's her party "colleagues" need the kick up the butt.. They didn't give her the support and respect she deserved as Australia's Prime Minister. Neither did the media for that matter. The sad peril of being a woman in charge... male chauvinism in this day and age is unforgivable.

Tbh I don't think she did a good enough job at defending her decisions and policies. I'm not sure if that was the medias fault and they just didn't broadcast her much, but I would always noticed when she was copping ridiculous criticism from abbott/Bishop that she would always use such a weak and unsatisfying defense that they could have blamed Hiroshima on Gillard and she probably would have floundered trying to defend the claim, I'm not saying she wasn't a good PM, just not aggressive enough.

The national disability scheme is a good and necessary policy. That was however, her government's only credible achievement. TOO MANY people attribute her unpopularity to her being a women. To my mind, that excuse is insulting to many many Australian men. She was NOT a good prime minister and she led a poor team. They are the reasons she became so unpopular. There are many Strong female leaders that are deservedly greatly admired. Quentin Bryce and QE2 for example.

Wrong. It's insulting to many Aussie WOMEN. Over praising a middle of the road individual unduly on account of attributed struggle on account of their identity is a form of discrimination against that identity. By setting a lower bar for some we are in fact saying that those people are less.

I agree with you about Gillard - but your claim that the Coalition will lead the country better is not true, these coalition is full of economic ignoramuses who can't wait to eviscerate this country with QLD style austerity - not pretty at all. If you want to know the end result of austerity in a deflationary period just go have a look at countries like Spain and Greece, that's hardly the better vision for Australia.
