Rescuers Down Under, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Lion King, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, Tarzan.. The 90s Disney Renaissance was undefeated growing up!

I remember seeing Pocahontas in theaters and, having read the book in school, walking away from it complaining that they stopped halfway through the story. Because of that, I never liked the movie, and as a result never revisited it. At that age though, I also was completely unaware of all the liberties that Disney took with most of their movies, not knowing how many of them were based on much more grim stories than what their iterations told.

Robin Williams voiced the Genie. That's why you recognized his voice. He was also in another animated movie called Ferngully: The Last Rainforest that came out around the same time as Aladdin.

Robin also voiced the Peddler at the beginning. That part was completely unscripted. They brought him to the sound stage and stood him behind a covered table. When they removed the cloth they had a bunch of items. They told him without looking grab an item and describe it. The man was pure comedic genius who was deeply troubled. He and Christopher Reeve would chat about stuff.

During the course of recording the voices, the late Robin Williams improvised so much they had almost sixteen hours of material. Because Robin Williams ad-libbed so many of his lines, the script was rejected for a Best Adapted Screenplay Academy Award nomination. - This is HOW amazing Robin Williams at comedy. RIP Robin Williams he was one in a million. Also, the music is so iconic and amazing. I love Alladin. The story, the lessons within it, music, etc. This is a true classic.

And sadly, because there was so much improvisation to Williams' character, the Academy refused to nominate the movie for an Academy Award for Best Screenplay.

That's a really stupid reason to reject a script for an award. If anything, it should have automatically been given the award on the spot.

Something to realize is that Jafar was actually running the city for quite awhile and it was doing ok. The sultan seemed to have no desire other than to play with his toys and if he was in charge of day to day decisions the city probably would be in far worse shape.
@Caffin8tor
@Caffin8tor 2 ай бұрын
That's one possible outcome. Though, if there were no Jafar, the sultan would likely have another advisor who could actually guide the sultan to proper leadership. There's also Jasmine who is competent enough to be an advisor to her father. Indeed, once Jafar is gone, the city appears to function pretty well afterwards.

A friend of mine had a Disney karaoke DVD with several songs from this movie on it. She would secretly sing along with it all the time when she thought she was alone, and turn bright red when caught. Songs are so good, no one could blame her. Occasionally being caught ended up in a spontaneous Disney singalong party.

Robin Williams actually started a battle with Disney for a good while over this movie. He did the Genie as a favor and said his only condition was they don’t use his name or voice to advertise the movie because he was performing in Fern Gully and they were spending money to have him and didn’t want Aladdin (who got him for free) to steal movie goers from seeing Fern Gully. Disney originally agreed to these terms but then changed their mind and had the Genie as the biggest character on the poster, and also had a bunch of clips of him from the movie in the trailer, I think he was actually the only one that spoke in the trailer as well. After this during interviews he would take shots at Disney and make fun of them whenever he got a chance. The sequel actually has the voice of Homer Simpson playing the Genie. When the 3rd movie came out tho Robin Williams and Disney had buried the hatchet and he played the Genie again.

Actually it was the movie Toys and not Ferngully. Originally the age is was going to be a small role but after how much they liked him they tripled the amount of screen time. Also he didn’t do it for free, he got talked into doing it for his kids so they could see a movie he was in since his others weren’t appropriate for them to see. Instead of the usual $8 million for his performance they were able to get him to agree to $75,000. His agent was adamantly against this but Williams overrode him saying that movie probably wouldn’t make that much since other recent animated movies didn’t do well. However Aladdin went insane by making a box office of $500 million.

18:23 Is it so obviously back when? There's a theory going on Aladdin is actually post-apocalypse and Genie is some genetically-modified super mutant being and that why he knows all the pop culture references and just puts up a Vegas show. He also spent 10,000 years in the lamp already.

Someone suggested the Genie lives "backwards through time" and remembers the future, like Merlin in The Once and Future King (Merlin affected 20th century clothing occasionally in "The Sword in the Stone"). I just thought he could pull off time travel as easily as any other of his cosmic powers. In the Aladdin animated series, he brought so much stuff from the future that Al, Jasmine and even the Sultan came to understand things like cars, movies, robots and spaceships.

That’s a good point! Jafar is basically the puppet for the evil schemes with Iago as the puppet master pulling the strings in that case. So one of the most important things to do with a disney musical is to make it fun for the parents as well, and this is one ABSOLUTE classic of a movie. You can watch this at ANY age and follow along. It's a great movie for the full family. Disney was such a special business back then. Frozen, I think, is where that magic ended. I can't say I watched Frozen, but I do know that there has yet to be a good release since then and I know that Frozen is one of the top movies in Disney. Just making this a fun experience for even dads is just absolutely unheard of, I remember getting my dad to watch pokemon movies and I could tell he didn't like them, but this movie? Literally anyone could enjoy it. The scenes where the parade came in had so much PG humor for adults and it's just dark enough to be interesting, but light spirited enough to be just right for kids.

Its such a classic. Made Right in the middle of "The Disney Renaissance" after "The Black Cauldron" (which I would say started with "The Great Mouse Detective" and ended with "Hercules". Its not my favorite Disney movie but its definetly in top 10....maybe even too 5. I highly reccomend checking out the other films from this period as they all are incredible. "The Great Mouse Detective, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Hercules, The Little Mermaid" Jafar is a fantastic villian and of course you got Robin Williams stealing the show as Genie. Its paced very well and the songs are definite earworms. My favorite song is either "Friend like me" or "A Whole New World"

It’s hard to imagine how far Disney has fallen from these movies. This movie was made with a budget of just 28m (over 20% was just Robin Williams salary & well worth it). It made over 500m at the box office. Aladdin as a brand; home movie release, global stage show, and multiple platform video game has made over 6b for Disney since it’s inception in 1992…. A year later it was destroyed by The Lion King which cost 45m to make & made a ridiculous 978.8m at the box office. Soundtracks, video games, theatre productions, take The Lion King’s total earnings well over 10b. Disney have wasted pretty much all these profits in recent years with the catastrophic purchase & destruction of Star Wars from Lucas Film, and other disastrous projects such as The Little Mermaid & Snow White. For the money they’ve spent on these failed endeavours they could have literally wrote “Disney supports the LGBTQ community” on the fucking moon.
