Luke encountered the vision of Vader in the cave because the cave was a place where the dark side thrived. Yoda said the only thing in the cave was “that which you take with you.” He took his lightsaber so in his vision he needed to use it. His face was under the helmet because he was scared that he’d turn into the monster. His own potential for darkness was amongst what he brought into the cave with him.

WIth your comments about the technical quality being higher in this movie, very true. But consider: To make Star Wars, George had to beg, steal and borrow every scrap of money he could. He shopped it to so many studios that told him no, and finally got a green light with Fox but only a low budget. To make Empire Strikes Back, the studio was all but begging to give him more money. Better cameras, better film stock I assume, better everything! Furthermore, George's team had to invent so many of the effects tools they were using as they were going, and he had three years to apply what he had already learned to this movie. With Han leaving at the start, he HAD TO pay Jabba the Hutt. He would have been back after that. A lot of the effects are a variety of stop motion as you guessed. And any CGI was added later because CGI didn't exist (practically) when Star Wars was made. It isn't stated, but there is about a 3 year time skip between Star Wars and Empire. There is further going to be a 6 month skip between Empire and Return of the Jedi. The Jedi are warriors. They won't start a fight, but they will sure as hell seek to end one, with extreme prejudice. If you're a Sith (dark side Force user) and you encounter a Jedi that you can't goad into becoming afraid or furious but who instead maintains their calm, it is time to worry because they are fully attuned with the Light side and ready to fight.

In those three years, Han Solo has given up his entire life for rebellion because of her. They have been through many adventures together in this interim time. I have an intermittent more than one occasion. Han knows his limits, Han knows where he stands with her and how much he can get away with. They both love each other, the problem is, she’s so wrapped up in a mission that she can’t afford the law herself to reciprocate those kinds of feelings though, he can see right through her. While he’s been saying it for three years without so much as a word but through his actions. They are both far too prideful for their own good. The entire point of the love story of this chapter is that Han has been trying to get Leia to admit to her self that she’s in love with him. While the line “I Know” was ad-libbed, it’s completely in keeping with his character. As he is really telling her, “I won.” I guess it’s a comforting thought. When you know you’re not gonna see her again.

@@brucechmiel7964 To be fair, Han didn't stay JUST because of Leia. At the beginning of Empire you can see that that thing is still VERY tentative and only starting to blossom. It's not made explicit, but he clearly also has grown to care about Luke (so has Chewie), like a little brother. We don't learn a lot about Han's backstory in the movies, but it is generally accepted knowledge that he only became a "loner space pirate" because he fell afoul of the Empire when he freed a group of Wookie slaves as a young flight officer, fresh from the academy. Falling in with the Rebels allowed him to reawaken his dreams of serving a greater purpose. Han has a lot to offer, the rebels accept and appreciate him for it and gave him a place to belong.

No CGI yet. The TaunTaun was animated, the technique was called go-motion. It is the same as stop-motion, the main difference is when the camera takes a picture, the model of the figure actually moves just a little so that the figure in the picture is blurred a bit. Just like what a moving life form looks like when you film it. The result is a little more convincing than stop-motion. For the Imperial Walkers traditional stop-motion was used. The jerkiness is just perfect for a mechanical monster. Models of Walkers ranged in size from a cat to that of a pony. Larger models were used to make collapsing Walkers more realistic. Yoda is a muppet created by the same artists from Sesame Street. Yoda is 800 years old. Grogu is 50 in The Mandalorian. Grogu I think is about 25 (?) years old at the time of The Empire Strikes Back. For now, I can tell you that when Obiwan was killed, he instantly became part of the Force. Remember what he said, “if you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine.” This is the first time you see Carbon Freezing. You remember it on the first episode of The Mandalorian. Han did not say I love you back to Leia, to upset her, make her angry enough to keep on fighting without him. In the novel Luke chose death rather than joining Darth Vader. He jumped to his death, but the city’s vacuum tubes sucked him out the bottom. He did not plan that. You did great understanding the Force, the light side and the temptation of the Dark Side.

This is a post-special edition version. There is a mixture of late 1970s physical effects, 1990s special edition CGI and then updated CGI added at several points since then (Lucas kept going back to tweak things). @DanielTate-wt9jt8 ай бұрын
@daveofyorkshire301 CGI existed. But it was not widely used in movies until the late 80's early 90's. It literally was used in like 5 or 6 movies before then. In the Star Wars movies the only CGI that Was used was the plans for the Death Star in Star Wars and ROTJ. It was used in Star Trek the Wrath of Khan, they used it for the computer animation that showed what Genesis was and did. It was first used extensively in "Tron". It was used to create the Owl in the opening and ending sequence in "Labyrinth" with David Bowie, it was used in the "The Last Starfighter" quite a bit. Tron and The Last Starfighter were kind of a movies used as experiments to see how audiences would respond to the CGI of the times. In fact Tron, The Last Starfighter and Labyrinth are great movies to watch to get an idea of how good CGI was in the early to mid 80's. It wasn't very realistic looking at all, it looked like a Nintendo 64 video game. It wasn't until "The Abyss" and "Terminator 2" that CGI became good enough to be considered seriously as a usable medium for film. And it wasn't used regularly in films until "Jurassic Park". Almost everything in all films before 1989 was done with practical effects (except the few instances mentioned above). Any CGI that was used was used very sparingly because it just didn't look good (realistic) until the early 90's. So many people today watch films from the 70' and 80's and make comments like "the CGI was really good then" or "I'm impressed by the CGI" etc. But the films they're talking about had 0 CGI in them. They're all practical effects. One of the big reasons for this problem is that George Lucas went back into the original theatrical releases of episode 4, 5, ad 6 in the early 2000's and added in CGI scenes and creatures. There's several videos on KZbin that show side by side comparisons of the original theatrical release and the added CGI scenes. Since then they've even refined and added in more CGI into the Star Wars films.

My initial assumption that both Admiral Ozzel and Darth Vader are on board the same ship, the super star destroyer, Executor, seems to be correct. After digging around some Star Wars lore, Vader's life support pod is on board the Executor somewhere, and Ozzel was commanding the ship. According to the Executor's blueprints, it is about 19KM or 12 miles long, so, at most, Vader is around 11 or 11.5 miles from the bridge, if the two parts are at opposite ends from each other. It is more likely they were fairly close though, and Vader would know exactly where the bridge was from his own location which means he almost assuredly wasn't using the force THROUGH the view screen, but knowing Ozzel was either on the bridge or in his quarters or a council room, he contacted the bridge, saw that Ozzel was standing right there, and reached out to that location to force choke him. That seems like the most likely explanation that I can think of, anyway.

So clearly, ben has changed his name and had been in hiding for 2 decades. Same thing with Yoda, he's on this swamp planet that is so remote and so low tech that he has to steal Luke's flashlight (lamp) because he probably has to use candles to see at night. If you're a legendary Jedi Master, you should be in some high profile high prestige location, not living under a tree in a swamp. The vision in the cave tends to confuse a lot of people. I see it as a warning to Luke that he could turn to the dark side just as easily as Vader had. Another way to view the scene is as a foreshadowing of the big reveal at the end of the movie. Perhaps it is a combination of the two. What have others thought it means? Yoda calls the experience at the cave a failure. Yoda had told Luke not to take his weapons into the cave, but Luke disobeyed. Then he used his lightsaber's might rather than the Force's intuition and wisdom to deal with the situation. Now, again, Luke is disobeying Yoda and Obi-Wan by leaving his training to help his friends, another failure in Yoda's eyes because Luke lacks the self-control to make wiser, more calculated decisions. Basically, Yoda and the Jedi code would not fear the loss, rather stay focused on the training at hand, even if it could potentially lead to a loss of life or other danger for his friends.
@shrodingerschat22588 ай бұрын
I never quite understood the test of the cave when I first saw it, but the more I watched and understood the movies in context, it seems that Yoda wanted Luke to understand how much he had the potential to become just like Vader. Luke was impatient and harbored anger, and those are the very things that will lead one to the dark side. "What's in there?" "Only what you take with you." Luke took his anger and aggression with him, reinforced by the fact that he took his weapons with him after Yoda told him he didn't need them. As a result, he failed the test. He had to learn that his anger and aggression would ultimately lead to his own destruction.

When we know we can do a thing, like touch our nose, but we say "I'll try", we are already making excuses to fail. I use this with my students all the time. I say "Please do your homework." They say "I'll try". I know they are, even unconsciously, planning ahead to have an excuse when they don't get it done. Then I teach them by telling them to try to pick up a pencil from the table. When they pick it up, I say "I didn't say pick it up, I said try to pick it up. Now put it down and this time try to pick it up." They get the idea very quickly that they can't try to pick up a pencil - they do or do not, there is no try. Then I ask them to do their homework and they don't say "I'll try" anymore. Sadly, it doesn't always mean they do the homework, but at least they learned something.

the "Range" of Darth Vader's Force choke: Vader is on the command ship, Executor. The command ship also contains the fleet commander, Admiral Ozzel (the man next to him is CAPTAIN) of the command ship, one rank below admiral. Vader wasnt choking someone on a different ship, he was choking someone]on the SAME ship but a different floor, likely upstairs, since the bridge is the near the highest point of the ship...that giant room with windows. I bet Vader COULD Force choke at a great distance, but I dont that's what's happening here. If you notice, the Star Wars movies dont just spoon feed you information, they dole out tiny morsels of world-building and let you discover it yourself, by having these kinds of questions. According to the technical readout books from the Star Wars role-playing game (1983-ish), Vader's meditation chamber is in the "neck and shoulders" part of the Star Destroyer....a few levels below the bridge....probably so his commute to work isnt more than an elevator ride.

Grogu is alive at this point in Star Wars history and is roughly in his 40s at this point. Yoda is around 900 years old in this movie. There are not a lot of Yoda's species in the galaxy (at least canonical characters). The species name, home planet and cultural information has remained mysteriously undefined through much of Star Wars' timeline.

The character that you mistook for the Mandalorian is actually a bounty hunter named Boba Fett. It is easy to mistake the two characters because of the Mandalorian armor they wear. The two armored suits are very similar, but not identical. (The Boba Fett character has his own Disney+ spin-off.) The Mandalorian (series) begins approximately 5 years after the events of the next movie in the saga, so technically, the character is alive in the galaxy at the time of the O.T.

59:47 Originally, they were running in a closed corridor. For the 1997 Special Edition the creators cut out the corridor wall and placed the CGI background there. George Lucas and the director, Irvin Kershner, never liked that Cloud City was so closed off. There were only a few closed corridors built for the set so they were forced to work with that. When the Special Edition was done, Lucas showed the edited footage of Cloud City to Kershner who was really impressed. It obviously doesn't look too good in today's high resolutions, but back then I was amazed by it.

Trying to keep things spoiler free, but some lore books and future movies/series do hint at force abilities that have no definable limits. Take Obi-Wan's force ghost for example, which can appear anywhere. So while some abilities do have physical limitations, others abilities, like Vader choking the admiral to death, only require being to be able to see the victim. Dude could've been on the other side of the galaxy and Vader could still choke him out as long as visual contact is established. Would also depend on the relative power/training/connection to the force that the individual has as well. Luke can barely maintain lifting rocks in this movie, while Yoda can pull a 10 ton x-wing out of a swamp like it's nothing

You are correct about the use of stop-motion with miniatures. It is pretty obvious in the scene riding the Tauntaun, and was used for many of the Hoth battle scenes as well. In the late 1990s CGI effects were added to the original trilogy, so often there is a clear visual distinction between the new CGI and the old practical effects, miniatures, animatronics, puppets, costuming and such. I suggest watching a KZbin, side-by-side scene comparison at some point in the future when you've completed the main saga (at least the O.T. and the Prequels).

Great reaction. Nice to see them essentially back to back instead of waiting 3 years! (This one is my favorite of the franchise, it has it ALL.) The snow battle was the first to use those optical effects against a white background instead of the black background of space as previously. Lucas and ILM developed the technology to do that for this film. All throughout, Han was showing Leia that he cared for her. WE knew he loved her, and SHE knew he loved her. He didn't have to say it. She just had to admit her feelings to him to make it complete. The line worked perfectly, and again it was an ideal reflection of his character to say it that way. Modern reactors don't seem to get it. They actually tried the "I love you too" and it wasn't working, so they tried a different tack to finish shooting the scene.

I have always considered that Admiral Ozzel, who likely started his career in the Republic Fleet before the Empire took over, was secretly a Rebel sympathizer. That's why he tried to dissuade Lord Vader from going to Hoth and then later bringing the fleet out of hyperspace at the "wrong time." Thus losing the element of surprise & alerting the Rebels.
