why tf australian qualification times are actually harder than olympic ones
@greggassen55485 ай бұрын
I think they're mostly there to make team selection easier. They want athletes that they can be sure will final at the Olympics over athletes that can't. Hence they set the Qual time at something in line with top 8 in the world. Then I'm guessing if they have extra spots left on the team after athletes with qual times and relays are filled, then they'll choose athletes who dint have Qual times. I'd imagine they'd pick athletes who could swim multiple events, or would be the only swimmer from AUS in that event (meaning they won their event at trials) before choosing a close second place swimmer. I'm just speculating here, though, so don't quote me on it
@Tully_23_325 ай бұрын
I had the same thought. I understand Swimming Australia only wanna take the swimmers that can win a medal but i look at the US for instance that takes as many as they want to both Olympic & World's, it doesn't make sense. Just because some one came in second & under qualifying time doesn't mean that swimmer doesn't hava chance of making a final or win a medal. We've seen Aussie swimmers in the past, talking 20/30 years ago whether at World's, the Olympics & Commonwealth Games that have come in second or third at trials that actually go on to winning a medal. We've seen Aussie clean sweeps at the international level. It's really unfair especially when u see swimmers from other nations competing that are nowhere near the times of the Aussie's that miss out coz of our set times.
@dudemanismadcool5 ай бұрын
@@Tully_23_32 I actually never knew this and I am Australian. That is incredibly harsh that we leave potential competitors off the invite list just because we only want to put our best foot forward, especially in light of your very insightful comments regarding the artificially heightened barrier of entry. I don't know why Australia wouldn't want as many representatives in the Olympics, swimming as many world class times as it could muster, as a means to emphasize its long swimming tradition that has produced a consistent output of world class swimmers for centuries.
@adamwright11765 ай бұрын
The UK did a similar thing with their standards at trials im pretty sure. I believe it was partly due to team GB only taking 30 swimmers so perhaps Australia do the same, so the harder qualifying times help make that number easier to achieve
@XDF7455 ай бұрын
@@dudemanismadcool They've done this since the debacle that was 2012 Olympics where some swimmers without medal prospects (they call the tourists) disrupted the team with their behaviour so they only take athletes with serious medal prospects now. I actually disagree with it but that's the rationale.
