A deeply moving and engaging portrait of a Vandemonian tree with the ability to survive blizzards, weep alcohol and bring grown men to tears.
Photographer Troy Ruffels explores the cider gums of Skullbone Plains a reserve owned and managed by the Tasmanian Land Conservancy. He photographs the trees as the basis for his artworks for an up coming exhibition.

I had an idyllic Tasmanian childhood which has sustained me throughout my life. My parents let me walk through the bush alone from a young age, defining my own relationship with the landscape. Troy Ruffel’s work is so profound, so true. And his sensibility translates to poetry & his deep appreciation of language. A Tasmanian gov programme helps art lovers to purchase over time & so I now have three of his pieces to enjoy every day in my home. They are the first artworks i have wanted to own, with images that resonate with dreams from my childhood. His work is such a gift.
