King Charles III and Queen Camilla will be in Australia this week - their first visit here since taking the throne. Given the king's ongoing cancer treatment, and recent drastic changes to the British Royal Family, the trip won't be as busy as previous royal tours.
So, this will be a slimmed-down tour - but is Australia's fever for the Monarchy still as passionate? Three experts from The Australian discuss whether King Charles has a bright future - or whether we'll be heading toward another shot at the Republic.

Better to have a consistent head of state however imperfect rather than an elected one because you never know what you are voting for, just look at the politicians in power right now 😮

As long as Australia keeps even symbolic ties to the UK we are not a mature nation. The 'If it ain't broke don't fix it' argument is specious. A more valid argument is 'If it serves no real purpose, why keep it?' It is hard to argue that a head of state on the other side of the world is relevant or serves a purpose. All that is necessary is for the Governor General to be renamed the President. It is so simple, but John Howard put people off by wording the referendum with his 'Chosen by parliament ' question. The referendum was 27 years ago and in that time a lot of people have died while a lot have reached voting age. Many were not even born, and many have migrated here and become citizens who are entitled to a say. The referendum result should not stand forever.

Republicanism is a solution in search of a problem. Australian democracy is not impaired by having a hereditary monarch. All strong democracies have undemocratic guardrails. Let’s focus on real problems that matter.

@@Whoretensia Hilarious! But nothing to do with my question. The monarchy is on the way out in Britain. The Saxe-Coburg-Gothas will no doubt want to remain in Sandringham or Balmoral if they can, California, the land of the celeb if they have to depend on low-brow media to get by. So what's the point t in waiting for the inevitable end? Make Murdoch your king if you want. Maybe you could even vote on who you want to be king every five years or so...

How incredibly crass, petulant and bogan is the pathetic discourtesy of the state premiers. And you want us to vote for you? Dig deep & find some manners. The King is not forcing you to stay with the monarchy, he has stated outright that if you want to become a republic, you are free to do so. Grow up. It is not Britain, The Monarchy or KC3's problem, it's Australia's. Until you get up and do something, shut up & be polite.

What else is there to do? It's a bit of fun. We're not America so we don't make the news that much and no one goes to our major cities and buys "I ❤ Canberra" T-shirts like they do in New York. People think of Australia and think 'spiders, snakes, and crocodiles.' King Charles is not responsible for anything his predecessors did and thinking of people as symbols only breeds martyrs and hatred. Getting rid of the monarchy just takes away one more interesting thing about this place.

@@JanGannon-ui5pe maybe I am a bogan. But, like most countries, we're just a piece of land with people standing on it. When I go to other countries and people hear my accent, I hear prisoner jokes, 'dingo ate my baby' jokes, and people badly imitating me. We're never gonna be taken as seriously as you might want. No country ever will be. It helps, however, to have some interesting things about a place. For example: when I have family come over from other countries I like to take them on tours around the place (for their kids, mostly.) Even the kids from countries with their own monarchies only care and ask about the monarchy. 'why's their a golden staff in the middle of the parliament?', 'has the king ever been here?', 'what's the king like?' , 'how many princesses are there in the royal family?' I don't glorify them in anyway. As I happily told my niece, 'yes, the king farts.' I have talked with the teenagers among them about the Mau Mau uprising, slave trade, and british civil war, as well as how Australia came to be, but they understand that king Charles is not to blame. So I say again, 'it's only a bit of fun.'

The monarchy isn't an interesting thing about Australia, though. Your nature and climate are the incredible things, cultural aspects, too, like the venues for your soap operas. I'm sorry you feel derided. I happen to be aware of and grateful for all that Australia has done to help Britain and its other allies in the past 110 years at least.

@@Fordnan our venues are overrated. The Sydney opera house blocked the only good Australian comedian from performing because his jokes are "offensive." I love Australia but the climate is dogshit, opera in Australia is thought of as a passtime for the rich, and a large portion of our animals are cunts. I've had my home infested twice, by two different insects. I've had advice to kill certain spiders on site. I wouldnt be so happy to get rid of the monarchy if I were British either. what else is there for American tiktok girls to gawk at? The food?

No, a fair vote would be a straightforward decision on whether to continue under the monarchy or to become a republic. Unlike monarchists, we republicans do not impose our will on others. Please explain how Australia still having the Monarch as its' head of state affects you. Who would you propose to be our president? The Monarch has no Political affiliation with any Political Party in this country, and he is the Leader of the Commonwealth of Nations. Do you also feel the Commonwealth is a waste of time as well?? So much of what you have listed as being wrong with Camilla and Charles can also be said about Australian Politicians that the public have elected into office.

The role of the Head of State (currently The King) is set out in the Australian Constitution. To infer that Australians could not devise and approve a similar arrangement with a neutral Head of State of an Australian Republic is to insult their intelligence. As a republican, I welcome the King as current Head of State but the time will come when Australians will be politically (and emotionally) ready for the change.
