I am in fact NOT an American, I am a Canadian. I grew up singing, 'God Save The Queen' everyday during my elementary school days, a portrait of our Queen in each classroom, learning the history of the monarchy and its role within Canada. I fully understand succession and all its intricacies, that it is most certainly not a "Popularity contest". My point was not that succession be bypassed in favor of who some would prefer be on the throne, but rather the debate within the public. A debate that while mentioned for some time, came to the forefront in Canada at least, when issues surrounding the King and Queen Consorts relationship were revealed. I fully understand that King Charles is exactly where succession would have him, that while we will enjoy the cornation in May, those of us old enough, will remember the beloved Queen we grew up with, and who will be sorely missed. As for the remainder of your comment, obviously it is a moot point, as my country is not lead by a president, but in fact a Prime Minister, as in Justin Trudeau.

It does seem that a person's growth impacted by a loss differs among individuals even when they come from the same family. The two princes is such example.
