An American discovers that Austrians are automatically on the organ donor list. When will this European madness end? Do they not know what dangerous consequences this can have? At what point does the world say “Austria, enough!”?
The Austrian will learn today how dangerous organ donin... donating… how dangerous it is to donate your organs.

Funny enough, when I got my bike licence, I saw myself in that position and started being a donor. Because no matter if you ride properly or if you are the lunatic on the road, traffic is already way dangerous, and riding a motorbike is probably the most dangerous form of participating in that traffic. So it really doesn't matter if I get killed by my stupidity or somebody else's. An organ saves lifes, no matter if the brain, that was originally attached to it, was working properly or not.

@@huh3864 You shouldn't go this route, if you think of every detail of potential danger or harm, everybody does things which could be considered stupid in such a way. You are driving a car I guess? Well traffic is dangerous and deadly to any participant, so by your logic, you are acting stupid regularly. Life is not only about living as long and healthy as possible, but about enjoying life. Riding a bike comes with a lot of danger, which in turns gives you a lot of joy. There are pros and cons everywhere. Many people don't want to ride a bike, maybe you don't want to. But you can't disrespect people for doing things, that you wouldn't do or that you see no value in. We are not some bacteria, which has no brain and at any moment only does things for survival. We want to fill our life with joy. And riding a bike is one of many methods to do, even when it comes with dangers.

My mother used to think that donating organs would leave your soul restless.🤦‍♀️ When I told her how hard it was for me to find out how to be a donor here in Germany and that I finally got my donor card in the mail...she only responded with: 'You give up everything for free, don't you?' Which is how I learned that she actually had a problem with me being a blood donor. I went at least 2 times a year. I could go 5 times a year, but never made it over 4. My iron levels are not too stables, often times I get send home. So yeah...that was a conversation that left me speechless for a while. Cos her only reason where movies. Literally movies, where a heart transplant patient somehow act differently.🙈 Also, how dumb can one be? She was the one not far from needing a liver or a kidney and mostly the direct family could provide those. Or a lung. Smoker, big time. So...if she thought about this for a second, she would have congratulated me instead 😂 But whatever. I had the luck of breaking free from her and cut contact a few years back. Since then...best years of my life

You are not automatically an organ donor in all European countries. In Germany, consent is required. The fact that we hear complaints all the time about how people are "too lazy to fill out their organ donor consent cards" means that most Germans don't like the thought of their dying process being : Be kept alive forcibly with maximal machinery, then cut up to actually die on the surgery table through removal of organs. It's interesting that defining "dead" as "brain dead" is only applied to the situation of possible organ removal. While in all other cases death is defined as all cell renewal having ceased and metabolism having stopped completely.

I registered as an organ donor at 16 and I also regularly donate blood. My parents were cool with it but my grandfather was all "mu mu mu god gave you that body" like I actually cared. Once I am brain dead or dead dead they can do whatever they want with my body not like I still use it for anything. I've actually been to something called "Körperwelten" before, where they show the bodies of people who have donated themselves to science. I went once with a friend who is a biology student and it was pretty fascinating seing how the body works and how different sicknesses and conditions affect it. I was in this situation with a family member and they push you a lot harder than you think a lot earlier in the process. It’s not like what you see on TV, there’s very little support for the family and a lot of pressure. I’m not saying you shouldn’t do it but I’m saying I need to talk to your family about it and have some clear guidelines in benchmarks and don’t let the hospital run the situation. Also something to keep in mind if you’re on the fence if your family member is very ill they may go through this process and not be able to use what they collect anyway so bear that in mind.

That is an evil lie! I worked for the UN fighting against human trafficking, which is a horrible complex crime and includes also black organ market and am aware of hospital procedures. Never ever this happened in USA or Europe! China and India on the other hand... Do not opt out of organ donoring - you could save / change up to five lives!

I'm an American living in Austria and I recently went back to the U.S. to renew my drivers license so I can vote in the next election. Everyone in front of me answered with a vehement "No way" every time they were asked about donating their organs. I don't understand this. The employee was super surprised when I shrugged and nonchalantly was like "Okay, sure."

Huh, I just watched a video today related to the end. The organ donor's eyes were moving and started crying before the transplant. He even started pleasding for his life. The supervisor was pressured by the boss to tell the doctor to go through with it but he didn't. According to the comment section that wasn't the only(first?) time he woke up that day.

so, over here in brazil we passed legislation where you needed to opt out too (late 90s or early 00s if i'm not mistaken) BUT everyone was with that same thought as the americans, and it ended up with only the poorest mfs with no families and unclaimed bodies being upheld by this law. so in the end, the families always have the last say on this matter.

In germany you still have to opt-in but i did and you can even deny access to certain organs out of (basically whatever) reason you want. The only organ I would have a problem with is my brain being donated, GOOD thing is: Thats not even an option, so full access it is!

I chose to be an organ donor, but I'll admit there's something about organ donation that makes me irrationally uncomfortable. I can't explain it, since I don't even believe in the concept of a soul or anything like that. Also, doctors are like any other group of people, meaning there are going to be some bad ones who are willing to put aside ethical concerns for monetary gain.

Yeah, I read in Wallstreet Journal that doctors don't actually have to do any scans to prove that someone is brain dead. They are allowed to do things like pin prick tests. Then they don't give anesthesia, and there have been instances of the donor gasping and reacting as if in pain when they are operated on.
@Kineth1
@Kineth1 5 ай бұрын
Want something to make you feel rationally uncomfortable? Look up cases where hospitals have kept brain-dead people on extended life support, against the family's explicit desire to disconnect, so that they could keep the organs fresh for future harvest.
@Nelsonis

Thats esp true of a for profit medical system like the US. But it doesn't mean that you wouldn't go to a doctor if you were dying in hopes that you get one of the huge majority that actually will save you. Why opt out of donation and decide the other way for someone else who is dying?

The problem is that here in the US, people were pulled off of organ recipient lists for political disobedience, resulting in their passing away. Even if they had far superior acquired immunity and were young, out of sheer spite they were removed from the list (the pharma reps claimed that since they hadn't taken their product often enough to show fealty, they were more like to expire later, which is of course demonstrably false). So if someone can be denied an organ because of political prejudice, why would they provide an organ to be potentially used to exclude others? 🤷🏿‍♀️

I am listed as a donor, but one day I got stuck in a skytram to the hospital with a guy who had a pile of coolers on a cart all marked as containing organs. I was stuck standing a few feet away from what used to be parts of a person, it just seemed wrong, disrespectful, like the commodification of the body itself made manifest. I know there might have been a heart in there that gave someone another 20 years, but it made me think about it completely differently. I dont think I'm going to renew my drivers liscense as a donor.
