Autel Evo 2 How to do IMU Calibration

For all of you who are wondering if you suppose to set it on the table with arms folded or hold it in your hand. The calibration is a directional adjustment. I did it both way. Setting it down and holding it in hand. Both ways the drone had no issues flying. Just an FYI. Aloha

It WILL be more accurate/stable of a calibration if you sit it down on the desk. Also, you want to ensure that the desk is a LEVEL surface or it will skew the calibration.

@@808-Stat3 That's surprising (and more than a little concerning) as it should be completely still while calibrating the "Inertial Measuring". I know my Mavics have failed and had me restart just from my granddaughter dropping a large toy on the floor in the same room.

Thanks for another great instructional video in simple terms. Only thing I would add is what IMU stands for (Inertial Measurement Unit) and what it does, measures pitch, roll and yaw using gyroscopes, to help stabilize the drone and measure changes so your drone knows if it needs to make any corrections. But you can add something about it in the description. I know many people will either know this or look it up, but since your video is a great instructional tool, might as well give them the whole enchilada here because they are already looking at your video. @@808-Stat3 change your description to also say inertial, as in inertia. The calibration is about the inertia measurement unit, and not about the first (initial) calibration. Siri did an autocorrect mistake on my first post that I have now corrected, but you also should correct your description. Yeah, I should have caught it before I submitted the first time, but what can I say... it was very late here in Cali when I did it. Thanks again for the information. @808-State My suggestion is to do it and put the drone in the position you see in the picture, can leave the legs out like you did. But, whatever you see in the pic is what the drone should look like. So most of the time the top of the drone should be facing you . I was holding mine in the air while doing the calibration standing out on my pool deck enjoying some sun. So you don't have to do it on a table for sure.

Yeah as long as calibration is initiated and you hold her still she will adjust correctly. I did 5 imu calibration to see if you actually can mess this up. She won't give you a successful cal in any case u move too much or not holding it the correct direction.

This was absolutely helpful. I called support. What they failed to tell me was that you had to hold it in that way. The diagram by itself does not give you that info. You have to see like you showed and it worked perfectly. Thank you. Awesome!

My heart sank because I googled IMU drone and a DJI forum came up talking about having to send it in after a hard crash lol 😆 I was convince myself I’d done something. @@808-Stat3 you guys were on the right track though. Towel may not work with the standing up vertical with camera up and 2 legs out for stability like in the pictures. Thats how Autel does them at the factory when they do repair work and send them back to customers. Just like in the pictographs. Problem with the pictures autel shows is in step 1 to 3. It indeed says fold the arms up but in the picture the arms are out which is entirely misleading. I was surprised when it worked by holding in mid air as I did mine on my marble table top in living room. The pictures after step 3 are properly displayed and the drone stands up like a handstand/headstand with camera straight down and straight up.

Exactly what I needed to know. Except I didn't upgrade the app prior to firmware. Now my compass won't calibrate. The gimble & IMU are good to go. I can't figure out how to reload firmware if thats what needs to be done.

Update the app. If u have a second battery u can re run the update my man. She does an update each time with a new battery.

Awesome! You are the best KZbin for Autel!!! Ok... I did all of the update and calibrations. I reported a long time ago about the Smart Orbit drift. It was right after the update where the drift started I have video of before and after that early firmware update. I was hopeful this would fix it. It drifted all over the place in smart orbit. It seemed the yaw was off and not holding. So the update that just came out did NOT fix it. It still wobbles or drifts around the target. I will post footage shortly as well as screen capture. The drift in normal hover seems better but I did notice a little increase in altitude from when you want it to hover. Dude keep it up! Thank you for bringing us your Hawaii footage and knowledge.

@@808-Stat3 Slider? No I just did straight smart orbit since I know the original release worked like a charm. I reported it to Autel today and synced flight logs. But I might go out today or tomorrow and move the sticks. Originally when it was released I had a dead lock on the target and it was AMAZING!!!!! So I am not sure why it does this, but it is annoying for sure.

I got stuck on step 3 about 4 times. The pictures don't help from step 1 to 3. I luckily have done an IMU calibration to the Mavic Air 2 and their pictures show properly. I didnt do it the way you show here I did it like DJI shows you in there pictures during IMU calibration. I had all legs folded in like it says in the beginning of process for the autel imu calibration. I didnt think you could hold it like you did because I thought it wanted complete stillness not held. Im glad I know it can be done this way too. Thanks for the review of IMU calibration as it wasn't the simplest at very first try. Great explanation my friend

@@808-Stat3 yeah step 1 through 3 I had the crafts legs all folded in so the drone was completely folded up like in storage. Step 1 through 3 went like a breeze after that. It sits nice on each side as well as the bottom. Then after step 3 it shows the pictures properly is what I thought. Again, glad I saw the way you did it too. But yes it sits perfectly flat right on the table top every way it shows you to sit it. Even when it looks like it's doing a hand stand with only 2 sets of legs out and camera pointed straight down toward the table top lol. I thought it needed to be a perfectly level surface and completely still for the most accurate calibration? Obviously not though if it can be held in mid air by a human. Its all about orientation of the craft is all it is... More than 2 ways to skin a cat they say lol. But yes the IMU calibration is very interesting. I wonder if Autel had to do that calibration each and every single drone they sold to us before we received them. My guess is yes they absolutely did that to each and every one, one by one before boxing up and sending them.

I actually speak back and forth with a fellow drone enthusiast that also has the evo 2 pro. I met him at a cool spot in Pittsburgh Pa at point of view park. We share info about the evo 2 and lots of other tech stuff. Its nice to have a big circle of people to share info about this tech stuff. He said he watches your channel when I mentioned you. Your getting popular brother. Soon you will be up there with Dobo and them guys. You might not think brother but it will come. In your settings you can find EXP and sensitivity settings . Play around with the curve of those controls until she flies to your liking ;)

my drone hit (friend flying) a wire that blend into the background about 15' high....tumbled down erratically...then at like 3 1/2 feet it twists and turns then STOP at 3' and held a perfect hover.....the self-recovery was heart stopping.....so calibrate that IMU

For those people that are having difficulty putting on the gimbal guard on the Autel EVO II Pro. I found it easier to turn the drone upside down to put the guard on. Hope that helps all.

Every drone has its pro s and cons and issues with software. The choice is yours. My experience are terrific with this drone and I love it. Does it have occasional glitches and issues ? Yes just like every other drone. I have not regret my purchase at all. I love that I went with Autel

I suggest always doing a full set of calibrations after each FW . Be aware though I ran into Gimbal cannot calibrate Drone is shaking error message. Multiple level surfaces later she finally did a calibration.

Do you have an issue adjusting the hieght limit? when i try to adjust over 120 meters, it gives me a warning sign saying basicaly you are responsible flying over 120 meters and i cant confirm or anything and i go back to 120 meters. wont let me go over 120 m. firmware is updated.

Although I had the arms folded the IMU calibration was successful. The IMU calibration for my DJI Mavic is almost the same, but the arms have to be folded and not handheld. Anyway, mahalo again!

Yeah I did it both ways AFTA I FIGURED IT OUT BRA. handheld or table doesn't matter she calibrated. Anytime u shake too much or move too much or tilt weird she wouldn't give me a successful calibration.

Man... You do it wrong. You need to put it ON table. That's why you are asked to take out propellers that you need to put sometimes it directly on table as per drawing and you could not do this with propellers.

@@808-Stat3 no, you should not hold it. Put it on surface that's why you are asked to fold back legs. IMU is responsible for getting data on movement of drone and calibration should be done at still surface. And it's not only Autel but all drones that have this. Specially for geodetic/geospatial use with applanix IMU for example. It has to stay perfectly still and our arms are not good for this. Sorry for being too harsh on this but later you got some people asking why their drone drifts. 2.5.11 is very much about these drifting issues and therefore it's important to do calibration perfectly. Still Autel could do better job and prepare tutorials as this is not clear in manual.

I have done over 50 imu calibrations. Hand held and level surface. I even have done intentionally screwed up imu calibrations to see the difference and yes you can do hand held imu calibrations. I wouldn't have done this video if it would screw anyone over my man.
