Autel Evo Nano Plus - Range Test Standard & Ludicrous Modes

Two range tests in Standard Mode & Ludicrous Mode with the Autel Evo Nano Plus. I got about what I expected and more! This quad has its quirks and in these range test flights the quirks showed themselves big time.
I didn't see any jello or gimbal tilt in the footage but you be the judge.
This will be the last flight using the replacement Nano Lite+ so I will be going back to my original early model.

I am extremely happy with the camera on this the Nano Plus, the gimbal tilt seems to be a non issue with mine and there's no jello that I noticed. The rest of what you are seeing is just bad and takes all the enjoyment out of flying this quad along with some bugs in the app and the things they still have not delivered. How long should we wait for a 90% finished product?

I remember seeing something about an option to prioritise camera or aircraft performance in the settings for the Nano, could that maybe account for it not holding a straight line ? Presumably there was a crosswind?

Thanks Chris , We appreciate it , that was a real true test , the Nano is a sweet looking Bird with seemingly good build quality and the Camera looks really good too but it is a bit expensive and then having to deal with these issues ? Nah , it just doesn't cut it , well I guess we'll have to wait on some updates to see if they will improve on these things , thanks and take care , Brother Chris .

Dji ex owner here. Well you can go with dji and you can have you’re camera not focus and so you can’t see where you fly. I sent in the drone for a replacement and the new unit I got back had the same issue. Just unbelievable with these people. At least you can see where you are going

really great video, yes I wont say how far you got, but you were so sensible, getting the drone back home with just 10% battery left, and still one amazing range. Others have tried further, with, as you can imagine disastrous results. Thank you again, really enjoyable and nail biting too. !!

I wasn’t a fan of the Mini because FIMI just can’t nail it with the cameras on their quads. Always too overexposed or too dark with a vignette effect.

Do you still have your Autels? Did they ever fix the crabbing issues, with Firmware updates? I have several DJI drones, AIR 2S, Mini 3, Mini 3 Pro, Mini 4 Pro, AIR 3 & FPV Drone. I just bought the Evo Lite + Premium Bundle & im contemplating sending it back. I wanted a non Geofenced drone, with a decent quality camera. But I've heard a lot of nightmare stores about Autels customer service, being pretty much non-existent. I would hate to open it up, & have my drone have issues that Autel wont help with.

All my batteries charge to 100%, it flies straight, at over 34mph in Ludicrous mode, with a tailwind, and it's still the original quad that I received in December with sticky and backward dampners.

I’m going to show everyone how my charger doesn’t always fully charge and skips a battery altogether not charging it at all till I unplug and plug it back in. Today a battery failed and I had to force land 2500 meters out. I have a ton of good flights on this quad and now it’s like a totally different quad. 💩

Damn! That, drifting right, was happening to me with EVO 2 6K Enterprise about a year ago. I checked the log for the flight and it showed no joy stick input. I figured it was a GPS problem because the mountain behind me was blocking half the sky even though it has been rock steady for 25 minutes going up and down that same mountain until the end. Weird.

Interesting video, Chris. 8 m/s in Ludacris mode 18 mph is pretty slow. You went 3 times farther with the original mini. If I remember right. I took the original mini out to 12 ,300 feet, and I am pretty sure you went further. I had 34% battery when I got back. I can't remember how far you went with mini 2. I am sure people will appreciate all the effort you have put into this drone.

I’ve done further with the mini 2 but bottom line is it takes to the light wind and is more reliable over the Nano. If the Nano didn’t have this camera it would be crushed under foot after this flight. 😂

Hi Chris - not flying I'd consider doing - in the UK, without a special license and approved safety case, it is illegal to fly out of direct line of sight and farther than 500m. It must have been an 'acceptable outcome' if you had lost the drone with you flying like that. It's clear you don't like the Nano+ very much. Addressing your first point, the battery capacity is worked out using an algorithm combining readings of the battery voltages, temperature and possibly some other factors like cell dispersion. It is entirely unike having a tank of gas with an accurate guage. I've rarely seen a 100% reported charged battery and even if I did, I would not consider it told me very much. Interesting as it was seeing that you had video feed and control over that distance, and despite the foresight you showed of setting the RTH altitude higher than the surrounding hills, all other safety margins were eroded on these flights and you 'made no luck' for yourself. I don't know what waveform the contol system uses for certain, but it is likely to be a an encoded FSK. At the range you were flying at, due to the inverse square law, the received transmitter signal would have been a tiny fraction of what there would be at a more reasonable range. Whilst FSK is good at rejecting noise, when the signal-to-noise ratio gets very low with some sort of 'patterned noise', elements of that could be erroneously decoded as commands by the drone resulting in the consistent 'crabbing' you saw. As you were near buildings at the time, perhaps there was WiFi there or perhaps there was a microwave shot you flew the drone through between two towers in the surrounding hills - I'm speculating, but 'phantom input' into weak control signals is something I've seen in other applications. In contrast to your experience, I'm finding my Nano+ 'flies true' and holds course well compared to the DJI Mini I have, which despite compass and IMU calibration, never holds better than an approximate heading. The Nano+ also holds a stationary position significantly better too, something very noticable in the stills photography I do, which I put down to Autel using better accelerometers and solid-state gyros than DJI.

Sorry maybe a little too short of an answer to a long comment but we live in different worlds and fly much differently it sounds so there will be a lot of the typical what mine does yours doesn't we often find just like My Mini 2 doesn't do the things yours does. I'm far from new to any of this so I understand the battery charge bla bla bla but maybe I should have given you more details in that area. There is an issue here and Autel has admitted it is something they are working on. They do not always charge fully I will say and sometimes will skip on in the bank not charging it at all till plugged back in again. Now let's be real clear here! I have made this flight well over a hundred times with so many different quads so I'm not going to even dive into the guesses of it could be this, what if that or maybe this type thought. I'm sorry in your assuming I don't like this quad. I like it some days and want to love it but they Fu$ked up on overall quality control so my distaste is of the things this quad is doing in different flights of the same area and sorry if that wrinkled your feathers some. I know a large enough group of people with this quad and it's great for you guys "lite users" that can't fly it like we do here or the back yard/garden fair weather flyer. I'm just showing what I have in front of me and not living in a bubble because I know several with the same on/off buggy odd ball issues. I can show you a perfect quad if I wanted to but you are seeing exactly what happens from a experienced person not some old guy that just decided he wanted to start flying drones and created a youtube channel. lol Lastly...The next day I made the same flight and the battery failed on RTH dropping 1% every 8 seconds on a perfect flying day so I had to emergency land 1.5 miles out which is another thing I have never had to do out here in this area I fly but maybe that only happened because I don't like the quad. lol If you didn't like anything about my flight and how I do things you are barking up the wrong tree with the wrong person brother. You will never understand! Thanks for watching and I'm happy you are having a much better perfect experience with the Nano Plus.

​@@QCGUY Hi Chris - I'd had a few times when the batteries attached to the charge bar 'skip' being charged. I put that down to the connectors not being fully mated. The batteries are more massive than the charge bar and don't 'click in' and can wobble about, which is poor design. As a workaround, I place a slim book the same thickness as the charge bar to support the overhang of the batteries, then push another heavier book against the battery fronts to stabilise them before powering up the charge bar. This works for me - is there more to understand about the Nano+ battery charge management? The rapid discharge you describe in a subsequent flight is very interesting and there are several immediate questions: What was the charge history of the battery involved? What was the charge level when you initiated the RTH? Did the drone climb to a recovery altitude as part of RTH? At what reported charge level did the rapid drop-off commence following the start of RTH? Were there any other 'oddities' in-flight this time or in other flights where this battery was used? What is the behaviour of this battery now? Yes, you choose to do things in flight I would choose not to and it's OK to have a different world view as they are illustrative. I like to control the content of 'my bubble', so I would not fly BVLOS as then I don't have the airspace the drone is in within my observation. I choose to be able to react to what I can 'eyeball', which is more awareness than you can gain from the drone camera, and in previous flying that has included me acting to avoid curious hawks, helimeds, very low-flying military transport aircraft and paramotors. It might be that the vastness of the US means that your accessible airspace is less 'busy' than mine. My approach is coloured by my Miitary and Space Ops background, where 'Assured Outcomes' in mission planning are a thing. This is not the same as being 'Risk Averse' (Military would be pretty rubbish if that were the case), but it does mean that you plan to have answers for what might reasonably happen before they do so mission result within 'acceptable outcomes' is maintained. The only 'luck' is what you choose to make for yourself. There are issues with the Nano+ that irk and concern me. Despite Obstacle Avoidance being set 'off', there continue to be instances when I think I'm seeing it have a spurious effect at height. I have some flying yet to do investigating that issue. The app displays flight history poorly, auto-stitching panorama does not work, there is no exposure bracketing for JPG 8192x6144 and the DNG image size is only 4096x3072 - many issues, some with no fixes due to hardwre limitations. Autel are yet to introduce the App and Firmware update that introduces their version of Controlled Airspace Flight Restrictions and we don't know what that will do. (In the UK, the DJI Zones are a mess, not mapping onto UK Airspace restrictions at all well and I can ony hope Autel do better - I have corresponded with them.) As such, I'm not a complete 'fanboy' for this product, but I do appreciate the camera, its stability in flight, and the stability of the data connection. Perhaps I'm more of a glass-half-full sort of guy!

Have you tried calibrating the gimbal? On my fimi x8 2022 the gimbal points slightly to the right when its calibrated at zero, so I set it a couple of points to the left and now it points straight forward and flies straight ahead in a nice straight line. Just a thought? Love the camera on the nano!

Is it possible that you can return this unit for another thru Autel? I haven't had any such issues with my current Nano + and I have about 13 flight hours so far. I picked mine up very recently and did a firmware update straight away. No Jello or other issues so far but I'll keep you updated if it develops any. It sounds like they need to improve their quality control process to ensure a much lower failure/issue rate. I'd be just as frustrated as you! My original EVO had a horizon tilt issue that drove me crazy for a year until I got the EVO II Pro. That had an intermittant tilt as well but only in the coldest winter days and then only on 1 out 10 ro 12 flights. Let us know how Autel fixes or addresses your issue!

I am not sure why you think it is crabbing to the right when the wind on your weather chart showed it was gusting in that exact direction at 22mph ? A 250 gram drone is going to be affected more than a heavier model in that kind of wind. Unless the drone flight weather chart you posted is way off being pushed from left to right is exactly what I would expect. I have flown in a lot of small planes doing aerial photos on assignments ( super Cubs & 172's ) and we have had to land several times with the nose of the plane pointed at 11 O'clock just to keep it over the airstrip.

I fly in wind more often then not and I know the flight characteristics of these drones big and small. So I’m not sure why you think you know differently when it wasn’t you flying and you don’t know my experience.

Great video. Thanks for sharing. I applaud you for having the fortitude to push the limits on a product you don’t fully trust. I always appreciate range tests but I admit that they always make me feel a bit anxious. I only fly line of sight and still feel a sense of relief after I’ve landed my Air 2 and Mini 2. I do want to upgrade my sub 250 drone, but I’m not sold on the Nano.

I’ve been running these over water flights way before I had a channel with terribly unreliable rc drones so I’m real comfortable and desensitized now. No disrespect but I couldn’t imagine only flying line of sight. I have discovered so many cool places by sending it. If you’re happy with DJI I personally would wait on the Mini 3 but pass on this thing for sure.

It’s a mental thing for me and it may stem from years of flying RC planes and helis because you can never take your eyes off of them. I just need to trust in the equipment and take the leap. Heck Chris, I'm a fan of Autel and couldn't bring myself to like this drone from all I've seen. Yes, the camera looks great. Then there's everyting else I see. The crabbing. The poor performance in wind. The problems you had wih the controller not directing the drone the way you want it to travel and the variance of the direction the drone is flying and where the nose is facing. And seems the battery levels are possibly inaccurate. While 4500 meters is decent for a drone that was hyped so much with great specs, I call the Nano and Nano+ disappointing. Yeah I know you are as am I so it’s disappointing but funny my original flew 3 batteries in higher winds today giving me perfect straight flights. I’m done with this replacement as long as my original performs but can’t recommend a quad so poor in light wind that isn’t consistent in the quality of the finished product. Shame because I love the camera but if I where to try to put together something cinematic from different spots at different times I would have more no fly days then good fly days to do so. Greatings and good job Lord Chrisader Dark Helmet (did you wear the official Darth Vader head gear filming this as apposed to, "Toto this isn't Kansas anymore" with your wind test and hair flying everywhere head gear?), and today it made me think, your mic kept cutting out when you where doing the Darth heavy breathing. I do see that the Farce (or is that Autel Farce) is still with you! “I felt a great disturbance in The Farce, as if millions of drones suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened.”, is what I am always waiting for, watching your Nano + "Space Ball" videos. As for the way it was flying, I hear crabbing is a great pastime in New Orleans. I enjoy photography and know that this Nano + has a great camera but... leaving the rest unsaid on my side, since you have said/shown lots. Also, I don't know if I will wait for the mini 3 to come out and might just indulge myself with the mini 2 (with hoping DJI puts out a clearance on it, with the new one coming out, as they did with the Air 2). Watching your and other CC vids, I am starting to really want to mess with drone flying and picture/video taking. I have seen that there is a Litchi app (from another CC) that allows more functions with the DJI mini 2. What are your thoughts on this app? Btw, "Should we get real close to these trees guys, right there is where I would like to live, that'd be real nice, right there in that cove:", up here in the Great White North, the beaver have you beat, as that is where they live. You will need to eat a steady diet of wood (Birch being their favorite) ("tree trunk for two please and bring us your daily Birch special with what ever is on Tap from the cove") to compete with them. Welp, I know I'm late to the show. This drone is like tossing your cell phone up in the air and see where it lands. It's so light, of course the wind is gonna take it over for a bit. I had the Xstar Premium (DJI Phantom look alike) drone for awhile and that thing was a beast!

Fly a DJI Mini of any version or even the Hubsan or Fimi Mini’s. The same wind that nearly stops this in its tracks doesn’t effect those the same way.

I had such high hopes for this quad but all the issues have just put me off of it. I have a Zino pro that crab walks along with other issues. It sits on a shelf collecting dust because of it. I certainly don't need a quad of this price sitting on my shelf too.

Prices are getting higher and quality is going down. Quality control seems to be the page that was ripped out of the book Autel borrowed from Hubsan. Product management from conception to release was terrible.

@@QCGUY I'd just like to have another option for a mini other than DJI. FIMI X8 mini came out with a lot of issues and from what I can see still has the tilted horizon and vignette effect. Hubsan mini pro, well, its a Hubsan so I don't have to say more. I guess the Hubsan mini se is ok but of all the footage I've seen from it they all have that Hubsan brown/rust tone to them. Based on Autels past Evo and Evo 2 I really thought Autel would be the one to put out the quality product. I guess they no longer care about quality anymore either.

Another question: how do you yaw on the autel nano? I need to learn how to rotate left and right smoothly. I just got this drone last week. amazing video quality but not that intuitive. Also how do I land it manually without returning it to the same place I took off?

I’m not sure I understand. 🤔 Have you flown it yet? If you have flown it then it’s clear what yaw is and how it works. As for landing? You just land holding the stick down till it lands and powers off. If RTH kicked in and you want to land yourself just cancel out RTH.

@@QCGUY I flew it for 3 days now. I wanna rotate left and right a lot slower to make it more cinematic. Not sure how to do this. That was my question. And I’ll try to land it myself tomorrow. You said just lower it till it stops right? Nothing else to do beforehand? And one other thing. I noticed some flickering when using the quickshot modes how do you use the anti flickering I see there’s 2 settings for that.

Oh, I had a legit question as I am waiting for this drone to come in the mail. What happens to the app when you're flying and you get a phone call? Does the app shut off and leave you FUBAR??

Nope 👎🏻 life goes on if someone should call you but it’s best to go into a do not disturb mode when flying.

Mini 3 all day long every day!!! Stay far away from the Nano. Biggest reason is no customer service, no parts and not near or close to the flight characteristics as the mini 3.

I have two of these and same thing with both using everything that came with the quad and other resources I have. 3 others I know experience the same thing and sometimes it won’t even try to charge the last battery so you have to unplug it and plug it back in.

@@QCGUY how bizarre, admittedly I'm not using the autel charger since they sent a Chinese pin'd plug to me in Australia so I'm using another usb c charger but haven't yet run in to issues, wondering if its the charger provided?

@@westcoastaerialimagery4690 Same today except one battery started failing. Dropped 1% every 8-9 seconds and I couldn’t get back so picked a spot, force landing kicked in and I took a car ride around the reservoir.

Another nice vid Chris. Seems like you're really rolling the dice if you buy this drone. Glad I passed on it. On the other hand, the leaked pics of the mini 3 body is discouraging in that it looks like the camera will be attached to the front sides of the shell. That leads me to believe it will not have a 3 axis gimbal and will use EIS instead to compensate. That's not good as the stabilization will occur at the expense of degraded resolution from the software adjustments. I'm really bummed out about this. Depending on the price point, I may opt for a mini 2 fly more package at a much lower cost. We'll see, hopefully next month!

My original took the same flight twice today. Flew straight and everything was much better except I didn’t go for range. My downside was a harder wind slowing it down a bit to much but it stayed perfectly straight. I’m taking it out for 3 flights tomorrow to make sure but I’m definitely parking this replacement.

@@QCGUY not wrong there! Consistency is still a issue and it needs a few more firmware updates to be considered stable I think. A lot of this is all fixable via firmware updates.
