We tried authentic Mexican street food in Oaxaca, Mexico’s food capital. Our DIY street food tour consisted of 10 items that we’d never tried before, including one mystery Mexican snack. It took us four days, three markets and hitting the streets ;) But did we tick off every street food item on our list? Find out by watching our Mexican food tour in Oaxaca!
We’re Izzie and Dale, two idiots from the UK travelling the world. Obsessed with having adventures, exploring remote locations and eating lots of snacks! Please subscribe to our channel for new episodes every other day :)

Tlayudas date back since the 16th century. Funny thing, I don’t understand why people would compare it to a pizza when pizzas weren’t even around back then. Especially since tomatoes come from Mexico so technically there wouldn’t be any Italian pizza until after Cortez brought seeds to Europe around 1519
@izzieanddale

People compare stuff with what they know and pizza is just more known across the globe. Shame, because tlayudas are delicious! Also, the first record of pizza was in the 10th century. It had no tomato and my grandma sometimes made it without. But tomatoes definitely improved Italian cuisine 🙂

Fresh tamales are usually found early in the morning and of course you have to try it with an atole or champurrado. The tamales you ate are tamales oaxaqueños ( oaxacan style tamales) which are wrapped on banana leaves regular tamales are wrapped on corn leaves.

Not necesarily. Both are a heavy carbo load so you can eat them separatly. In mexican cuissine there are no strict rules or formulas. Same as there is no winner cuisine, all states have something important to offer, hence taste and records is very subjective.

Excellent! I'm from Mexico and know that some food you've tried are LOCAL food. I've never tried Tlayudas, for example. Tamales are different around Mexico. I've never ate the version you bought. Chapulines are very common here, but not all Mexicans are brave enough to eat them. I like Chapulines, but tbh, the first time I ate them I was hesitating so I'M SO PROUD OF YOU for eating everything fearlessly. Keep enjoying!

Haha, we didn’t mind the chapulines to be honest! Thank you so much ❤️ we had a lot of fun making this video and learned loads about Mexican cuisine. But we know it differs between regions so it would be great to come back and try more 🙂

Ok, so I'm quickly becoming the annoying guy who comments on a lot of your videos lol, but, I wanted to make a few points: 1. I love the food tour parts of your videos because the way you do it is very approachable(not everyone wants to book a guide) so keep doing them! 2. I don't know if Rick Steves is a travel person British people watch, but he's big in the states, and one of the points he always makes is you don't have to know the language to travel there, you simply have to try. I love the fact that you show that you don't need to be intimidated, even in areas where people aren't English speakers, to travel and as long as you try to speak some of the language, there is always a way to communicate with people there. Keep up the great videos!

Haha keep them coming, we really love getting proper feedback from people! We’ve heard of Rick Steves but he’s not as big in the UK. Sounds like he has a good point - as long as you try, people are very receptive 🙂

Mole its a culinary complexity beyond a single explanation. You just have to try it. The tamal version you got its called tamal oaxaqueño and its based on corn masa dressed with mole or salsa plus meat, usually chicken or pork. These are heavier than the other tamales. You have done an excelent work guys.

"It taste like chocolate!!" - foreigners said when they tasted the traditional way in which creators of chocolate used to prepare it.
@izzieanddale
@izzieanddale 2 жыл бұрын
We did a chocolate workshop with an academic (video coming today!) and I feel confident correcting you. Tejate is only one of the drinks cacao was made into by pre-Hispanic tribes and they all taste different. The Spanish misrepresented the name as chocolate. A Dutch chemist paved the way for solid chocolate and and English person made the first chocolate bar. Hope that helps you understand how food can evolve into something unrecognisable over thousands of years, leading to comparisons between the ancient and the modern 🙂

The pronunciation of the dishes is killing me. For instance, “Kajehtah” lol. It’s actually pronounced like kah-heh-tah. A couple rules that will make Spanish a little easier is that the letter ‘J’ sounds ‘H’ and the letter ‘C’ sounds ‘S.’ Also, even though you didn’t plan stuff, it still looked fun. It’s fun to wander around. Keep up the great videos!
