Sudūvos aukštumos vaizdas iš paukščio skrydžio ir liaudies daina Liudviko Rėzos užrašyta Piktupėnų apylinkėse prie Tilžės, Romuvos išversta į Prūsų kalbą. |
Sudovian highlands (Góra Zamkowa) from above - the historical lands of West Baltic Sudovians (Yotvingians) & an excerpt of an authentic folk song from East Prussia first recorded from country people in Piktupėnai (Piktupönen) near Tilžė (Tilsit) in 18th century and printed in the song collection by Ludwig Rhesa. The song's original lyrics are in Lithuanian language (Preußisch-Litauische) but the pagan Romuva community has translated it (back?) to West Baltic Old Prussian language - that's the version you can now hear in this video. The singer is Kristaps Kukurs.
TRANSLATION OF THE FULL LYRICS:
Moon has married Sun
In the very first Spring
Sun had gotten up early
Moon had separated
Moon had been walking around alone
He made love to the Morning Star
Thunder got greatly enraged
And cut him in half:
- Why have you separated from Sun?
Why have you made love to the Morning Star
And have been walking around all nigh alone?
FULL LYRICS:
Mīniks Saulīkan weddi
Pirmanin wasarīkan
Ankstāi saūli etskīja
Mīniks izsklaitinna si
Mīniks aīns neikaūwa
Deināinan enmilīwuns
Perkūns spārtai ernērtuns
Tennan pērpus perkīrta
- Iz saūlin izslaitinna s’
Deināinan enmilīwuns?
Deināinan enmilīwuns
En naktin aīns neikaūwuns?
DAINOS ŽODŽIAI:
Mėnuo saulužę vedė
Pirmą pavasarėlį.
Saulužė anksti kėlės,
Mėnužis atsiskyrė
Mėnuo viens vaikštinėjo,
Aušrinę pamylėjo.
Perkūns, didžiai supykęs,
Jį kardu perdalijo.
- Ko saulužės atsiskyrei?
Aušrinę pamylėjai?
Viens naktį vaikštinėjai?

My herritage is from that place. LIstening to that song brought tears to my eyes. I know that some of my Lithuanian ancestors are Curanians, but maybe there were also Prussians as I found it easy to sing this song and to pronounce it. They are not forgotten and their plight also not . We are the once which carry it forward. Nothing is forgotten.

GolyathZiofister, it's interesting that you would say it sounds Nordic because it's not atypical for Balts in any way. For example, you can compare it to this typical Latvian song Latvian folk music | Latviešu tautas dziesma - Projām jāiet (Vilki) or this typical East Lithuanian one Jonas Trinkūnas "An kalno an aukštojo" So, maybe "Norse" is not the best way to describe this type of singing as it appears to be common on both sides of the Baltic sea.

There are bound to be some similarities as both languages share a common linguistic ancestor some thousands of years ago but thereare differences too - for an ordinary Lithuanian it would be difficult to decipher all words in this song without any mistakes :)
@lilithwulf
@lilithwulf 4 жыл бұрын
There definitely are a lot of similarities, but they aren't so mutually intelligible like the Scandinavian languages or how Thai and Lao are, for example. There are a lot of cognates where the word is nearly the exact same like mēniks/mėnulis, saūlis/saulė, rānkā/ranka, and so on - but there are also some false cognates where the words look similar but mean something different like how "be" means "without" in LT while in PR it is the word for "and," and how "kai" in LT means "when" while "kāi" in PR means "how" or "that (cj.)." In Lithuanian there are 7 noun cases and 2 genders while in Prussian there are only 4 noun cases - nominative, genitive, dative, and accusative - while there are 3 genders - masculine, feminine, and neuter - so it is more similar to German in that respect. There are some unique grammatical traits that are shared in both PR and LT, such as when you say "I like," the "I" takes the dative case as to say "for me it is liked" - mennei padīnga/man patinka, as well as the use of "double negatives" to create meaning that looks rather strange to english speakers. For example, if you wanted to say "I haven't eaten anything all day," in PR this would translate to "As nika ni ēda pastippan dēinan," similar to LT, "Aš nieko nevalgiau visą dieną" - which to literally translate in english would look like "I nothing no ate entire/all day" which wouldn't make sense as it does when speaking in either LT or PR. If you want to learn more about the beautiful language of the Old Prussians, you should come visit the website for the revivalist movement here: twanksta.org/ Some useful links on the website are the wirdēins, or dictionary, where you can look up the prussian translation for most any words you would like from a multitude of different languages: wirdeins.twanksta.org/ and Bilā, where you can do some practice lessons if you wish to get started learning the language: bila.twanksta.org/home And if you would like to hear more of how the language is spoken today you can check out the Prūsiska TV youtube channel (some videos are even captioned with english subtitles which can be very useful) - kzbin.info/door/qhLH_SLh3apNZjSruEXZMg

I’m going to cry. I just found this while researching to find my Prussian ancestors. I’m an ethnomusicologist and a part time genealogist so to find the music took that piece of my soul home to be embraced by many grandmothers. Corny sounding, but it’s how I feel. I haven’t found my Prussian 3rd great grandfather’s family, born in Baden-Baden circa 1820. Just learned his name was changed when he was in Louisiana leaving for the Isthmus of Panama and on to San Francisco. There he met and married my Irish 3rd great-grandmother. They settled in Tuolumne County and had many very tall children. If anyone knows about Prussian history and this brings things to memory that could help me learn about him, I would be very grateful for info. I’m wondering if he left because he was 15 or 16 and was nearing 6’ tall. Both his parents were Prussian as well.

I am not an expert in that field but here are my two cents. You can have a look at google scholar. It's specifically used for academic documents. Academic documents usually contain literature reference. Just search for prussian language there and you will find a lot of entries. Another good way to start a search is to have a look at wikipedias literature section regarding you topic of interest. The english wikipedia page for "old prussian language" has more than 20 entries in the literature section. If you want to hear people speak prussian you can do that here on youtube, too. Just search for the channel "Prūsiska Tāliwidāsna". Hope that helpes.

@Balticfolk
@Balticfolk 9 жыл бұрын
ziurininkas This song is endemic to Prussia and it's been attested there among country people who have assimilated part of Prussia's indigenous population, so within the Prussian context is as authentic as one can possibly get. Songs can be translated from one language to another back and forth, but they still remain the same songs (plot, melody, rhythm). The words used for this Prussian translation come from authentic Old Prussian attestations (mainly the cathechisms & Elbing vocabulary), they're not neologisms.
@ziurininkas
@ziurininkas 9 жыл бұрын
Originally such type of mythological songs is more common in Latvia and could be brought by late Kursenieki settlers from Kurland, so there could be many versions to explain the origin of the song. In many main Lithuanian folklore mythological beings, like gods or even Sun or Moon were tabooized - preserving "sacrum", it was not allowed direct finger to the sky. Mythical events in calendar songs appear very metaphorically and softly, like "falling sparkle" which is supposed to be an act of cosmogony caused by thunder. Such wedding or similar songs seem to be desacralized becomming an object of simple folk poetry.
@Balticfolk
@Balticfolk 9 жыл бұрын
ziurininkas the current distribution hardly shows the origin rather than merely conservativenes of one or another area, considering that romances and ballads have become the most common song types in many areas pushing out the indigenous folklore. And geographically somewhat isolated fringes tend to retain more authentic things than the epicentre whence new fads tend to start. I'm somewhat skeptical about the notion of stellar bodies being a taboo because in many songs they (especially the sun) interact with humans on a fairly mundane level, e.g.: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q3apqmeCrrCXaas Many other songs about love equate lads with Moon and maidens or women with the sun.

All baltic peoples are the True descendents of the ancient thracians. You are the modern thracians and speak the modern thracian language, considered dead by the foolish historians who have hidden through centuries the history of this once glorious people. Achilles, Alexander the Great, Zalmoxis, the gods of Olympus, the Vedas, the sanskrit language, the achaemenid empire, the goths, all these and many more belong to the thracians and you must be extremely proud to be the descendents of this nation. annoying is the subconscious nordification of Old Slavic and Old Baltic languages in songs and lowering of voices when they speak these languages - they will behave as if they can not pass these words through their throats fluently, I understand that these are not the first languages of anyone, but I have heard people who speak them fluently and SOFTLY.
