I judge a society and its people by how it treats its poorest, not its richest. If there is mass displacement homelessness, poverty, crime ...or national citizens are not prioritised over foreigners, then it speaks volumes to me of the leadership, their values and their qualities. The law of transitivity. Simple, really.

My neighbor had a full-time job. He was responsible. Paid his rent and bills. Then he had a kidney transplant. His body rejected the new kidney and the anti rejection medicine. He couldn't pay his rent. Moved into his pickup. Was found dead a year later slumped over his steering wheel. My opinion is around 80% homeless are disabled.

I wouldn't say 80% unless you're including mental health in this. I have been working in tthe trenches with my homeless community for 5 years. I think no human should be homeless nor hungry 😢. I know my people very well because I care enough to listen to them and do what I can to help them. I've been homeless and addicted to drugs more than once, and experienced alot of trauma so I can personally relate with them. WE HAVE TO DO MORE BECAUSE MY PEOPLE ARE DYING FROM OD ALL THE TIME AND EVERYONE IS SOMEONE'S SON, DAUGHTER, BROTHER, SISTER 😢❤

Absolutely, I have personally experienced this. When you are strong and a support system to others people perceive you as being very strong and not in need of any assistance yourself. Being a very capable and responsible person I was always took care of myself and others. After being bit by a tick my health has been on a downward spiral…in a few short years I’ve lost all the security I spent 27 years building. We fall through the cracks because we have not been ingrained into the system. Last year I had a dear friend that took his own life after the shutdown destroyed his financial livelihood and with his physical limitations he was unable to recover. A very intelligent person that couldn’t make a viable living with so much inflation and so little opportunity. He endured 3 years of chronic struggles and set backs.

The number of reasons for individuals becoming homeless are many but what never seems to change are the lack of resources available to deal with it. The most common reasons for homelessness range from addition to mental health issues. Veterans transitioning to civilian life to losing the bread winner in the family due to a tragedy. Stories like your neighbors or seniors who can't keep up with inflation. Downturns in the economy to elimination of industrial and manufacturing jobs due to technology. The fact that more than 50% of the existing work force lives pay check to pay check and can't afford an unexpected expenditure of more than $500 bucks doesn't help either. The list seems to grow every year along with the growth of the homeless population. Another societal metric that seems to grow every year is wealth inequality. Much the same way it did in the late 19th century.🤔🤨

I have been homeless five years plus. I just want to be left alone because I am so stressed out and endlessly tired. It is a very inefficient way to live and a full time job in itself. Once I tell someone I am homeless, their attitude changes and I feel the judgement come on. I'm 56 with some health problems. My life use to better when I was younger but now it is purely survival. A form of happiness in a odd way. Wait another 10 years and the real shit will hit the fan. Be safe out there to all other homeless people.

I have observed homeless persons in the area around my work. I occasionally interact with certain individuals and help where I can. They are there in the moment for maybe months at a time and some even years. Then one day they are not there anymore. My fear is that they just didn't wake up one day. The city then comes in and removes their belongings. It is as if this person never existed. We live in system where good honest people just don't matter!

Watching this from inside my home- my car. I have a full-time job but this year had health issues and sick leave only pays 60% of my pay, which leaves me a little over $200 a week because I still have to pay taxes and health insurance. I have maxed out all of my credit cards and taken a loan to keep myself afloat but still... here I am in my car.

you can’t live in a shelter, you can’t live in a car, you can’t live in a tent, you can’t live on the street. People in these situations are existing at best. Existing is not living. To live means you have enough money to choose what to do and you are not having to interact with “the system” social workers, housing authority, food stamps, SSA, police, and government workers who absolutely do not have your best interest in mind. People in poverty are employment for people who work for the system. You are not really living until you have a house on five acres, you get to choose who you let into your life, and you are not someone else’s project.

I'm about to be homeless again. Doktors butchered me. Attorneys protect them instead of helping the people they harmed. Family stole my money and assets. I'm dealing w lifelong disabilities. Most people I met while homeless suffered from the same issues, in that when you are down is when people will stomp you into the dirt. I could have been comfortable in life, but others were not going to let that happen. I have pets and am too old to go thru this again.

These people don't want to be homeless, but the trauma, feeling unsafe, lack of resources, and addiction are the main reasons why they don't seek help😢 we have to do more to help and having the right people to go talk to them is the #1 step! When someone like myself talks to them I truly listen and love hearing from them, but they won't take help if they don't trust you, so having a similar background helps me show them it can be done. But political bs gets in the way and doesn't give enough resources to help😢❤

The ones who make me the most angry, are the churches. Why are we not seeing street ministry?!?!?!? No landlords will accept Section 8 in my town. Alamogordo, NM. Pop 30,000. They actually post that in their ads. I live in seriously substandard housing. Old dilapidated RVs that should have been junked. Leaky roof, no hot water, no working appliances, mice, rotting wood, black mold, extreme gaps that allow dust and air, landlord charges extra for using an electric heater, pushes to install wood burning stoves in these tinderbox RVs, allow tenants to stay with severe felony backgrounds, substandard wiring (mine caught fire twice), pushes younger women for sex in exchange for rent, raises rent on people who stand up to the abuse. City and county dont care. They know everything. People say one reason Section 8 is not allowed, is then landlords would have to do repairs ($$). A social worker came once from Las Cruces to actively help me find housing (special program set up), and no landlords would accept THAT program. Vicious and active discrimination against poor, and racism also involved. Mark, please do interviews here.

There are many reasons why people end up homeless. But the common denominator is the system in which we live. PROFITS over PEOPLE will always lead to honest people suffering. Today we are seeing on an unprecedented scale the vast majority of wealth concentrated in such a minuscule percentage of the populace. The system is and always has been rigged in their favor. Have you ever wondered why a politician votes against the better interest of their constituents? Follow the money and the answer is obvious. The greedy rich are getting worse and worse - 2 Timothy 3:1, 13. Homelessness is symptom of a bigger problem. It will get worse before it gets better. But IT WILL GET BETTER when good government steps in and removes this system of things - Daniel 2:44

I was staying in a homeless shelter in Halifax N.S. Canada when I was 17 years old (1987). I'm 54 now. A shelter employee introduced me to a female reporter who wanted to interview someone. I started pouring out my heart. At first she looked seriously concerned but within minutes she cut me off and said it wasn't the story she was looking for and interviewed another kid. I felt embarrassed and confused. I think the other kids' story made it in the newspaper. One day not long after that I was somewhere with that kid and we encountered that reporter. I saw the same intense concern on her face when she talked to him. She ignored me. Homeless shelters were a revolving door for me until I was 30 and not because of addiction. I have no addictions. I just had no direction. I would get a job, get a place, quit the job, lose the place, and end up in the shelter. It was a vicious cycle. I snapped out of it when I was 30. I've been at the same job now for 15 years this January and before that I had a job for 5.5 years. Because I don't like the alternative.

Truth I can maintain my brain damage and related Bipolar because I am retied married and have 5 pensions a home and Gold and Silver. I am able to exercise, have top nutrition, vitamins, good sleep and low stress .If I was homeless all that would get worse. Another truth I learned is that the world economy is crashing because of inequity where the middle class die off as the rich get richer by not paying fair income tax. According to the math genius economist Gary Stevenson in Britain we are heading to 1830 where work camps for the poor began and ran till 1946. Oliver Twist is not fictional it was written by a poor worker in the work camps. MAKE THE SUPER RICH PAY like they did in the 1946 to 1980 time of the boomers so people were able to get ahead. ...These are the truths so blaming the homeless that grow daily is nonsense it is rich greed and Government allowing this crisis.

I was homeless as kid and young adult. Sometimes people have no family . If they have family they’re abusive, not in the financial position to help or have space for you where they live or simply don’t care. Friends? When you fall on hard times there is no such thing as a friend. Churches? They never help. In rare occasion they do , it’s exchange for work or they want to exploit you. My mom faithfully tithe to the church . When she became disabled they said we can’t help you. All churches and charities do not help I can tell you from personal experience. Doesn’t matter if you are member of the church they don’t care

Requiring a person to conform to expectations first is disingenuous. To say that my survival hinges on whether or not you know if I smoke pot means you expect me to lie. Which means you want a good excuse to deny me at the last minute. Thus relieving yourself of the task of helping me but not taking the blame for not helping me. Meantime, I am just over here getting through the hours of a rotten day, day after day. Weed will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times with no weed.

Society is based on rules and structure, along with obligations and expectations. The homeless do not believe in rules and structure. They never pass up an opportunity to undermine authority. They do what they want, when they want, wherever they want without reference to anybody else, such as having sex in broad day light in full view of a children's playground. The homeless create nothing, bring nothing, and do not pay taxes. The homeless have a tremendous appetite for resources and never pass up an opportunity to consume. They are never satisfied. They take over public spaces and create endless amounts of mess. People do not like the homeless because there is nothing to like about them.

I've said it before that not all homeless are drug addicts BUT its a huge driver in keeping them homeless and you will never eliminate homelessness without solving the drug issue along with thewir mental health issues. Watch the Kensington video's on how people will keep taking drugs that are eating away at their flesh because they only care about their next high even if its killing them. We didn't have these awful drugs when I was growing up and I never saw a homeless until recently. Drugs of choice in my generation were cigarettes and marijuana but people could still function.

When you have lower paying jobs and rent more than your whole month pay. Here in northern Virginia a single person has to make at least $60,000 a year.. it's almost $2,000.00 a month for a one bedroom apartment... Going to a shelter doesn't solve the problem, most shelter here only give you 30 days and after that you are back out with nothing... too much greed in America

I'm tired of people criminalizing homelessness. Its time for meaningful change. Naysayers need to spend a month in a homeless person's shoes before throwing blame around or creating "solutions" that don't work at all. P.S. Pulling up by your bootstraps is a myth. I don’t think we get value in today’s world with content of what it’s been discussed here. We all know that homelessness is an issue. You’re not telling us anything new. To make a difference you have to start talking about what happens leading to homelessness. I find that the “poor homeless people” narrative is not effective to solve the problem. What would help is data informing a system. Well organized so that it recognizes who is at risk before it happens; not feeling sorry after people lost their homes.
