I wouldn't totally discount modern ceramics, there is after all a hierarchy of quality. Just like we can buy dinner ware from Walmart on the low end and Limoges on the other end. I love modern Chinese ceramics, besides, if I spent $1.200 on a vase it most likely would not be on my kitchen counter with utensils in it:) The modern stuff you are showing here is schlock but the higher-end stuff can be very pretty.

I hate that he uses relative terms like "creepy". Also, says things like "wrong color blue, too watery" then in the next photo, same color blue is the correct "cobalt" blue. His examples are just not defined enough. I hope this improves because this is a channel I'll be following.

White and blue porcelains are quite tricky, the color also depend on the environment they were in, like under ground, under sea, in a storage etc, many things can happen to a real piece and the bottom can somewhat look like a fake especially in unrestored conditions and you have to know a lot about porcelain techniques during those era, also differ between the craftsmanship, like items for imperial families, items for commoner class, items for export etc.

Why does the USA allow these to be imported without being stamped "reproduction"? This is very dishonest by people making fakes and trying to pass them off as original. It seems criminal to me. Thank-you for the video.

Thank you so much Peter for all the useful information.I have a fairly large collection of Antique Asian porcelain and about once week a neighbor or friend brings something by that they want me to look at along with the thrift stores I go to.I can now send them to your video.The last year or so I've noticed a lot more fake monochrome and Flambe vases especially on eBay.A video on these would really be great.I'm always surprised at how many people but these.Thanks again I'm signing up for your newsletter.

Thanks John, monochromes are pretty easy to fake, so they've been flooding into the market as well as piles of Langya examples and everything in between. Also in the last two years we've seen a number of Song style "Ge" pieces turning up with "old collection " labels including fake SPINK'S tags and a mysterious non-existant collection from Sweden. Those have been selling for well into five figures at live auctions from Maine to Seattle. and so it goes. best to you, Peter

The Chinese call ceramics the art with no mercy.A large part is the hard work involved in the transporting and refining of the porcelain.Then there are the multiple mistakes that can happen during all stages of the production process.All of this followed by rumatism and an early death from silicoses.Yet some how the art reached a high pinnacle of expression .Any way I just wanted to mention the base on the Dragon pot ,where I think a fault like this would come about because the pot was frozen whilst wet.The porcelain becomes laminated as it is thrown and if frozen whist drying the laminations of the many layers will be revealed like filo pastry. Its possible to loose a large amount of work, as when the pots thaw they just fall apart.So if a potter discovers that quite a few days work has been effected by a frosty night when he comes into the work shop in the morning in desperation he may try to save the pots by putting them back on the wheel and trying the throw out the ridges of the pots that have not fallen apart. But the bases of any pots effected in this way cannot be reached and so may only reveal the lamination when dried or when biscuit fired , by which time a large amount of work has been put into the pot and so sponging over the base of the pot and trying to save all that work would be a natural thing to do.But if the potter was just trying to imitate in order to get a higher price then the pot would surely be discarded. .

I too, was wondering if you can take a look at my "curb alert-craigslist free stuff", I got the night before last. Their ad said to just come and get it off our porch-a dinette set. No- one was home when I got there and I noticed some nice stuff, at the curb...I felt VERY uncomfortable and to my relief , the daughter of the home owner came to clean some more. She said she was unaware of the posting and called her mom. She said not to worry about pulling the ad back up on my phone to show her, that she believed me. Tg lol!!!And then went on to say that her mom was majorly down sizing and that I could help myself to anything on the porch and front yard because it was all going to the trash soon. They had had a yardsale a couple days earlier. The blue and white bowl was sitting inside a very large pitcher planter on a pedestal, with large flowers on it and it was caked with dirt and hard grime from supporting a plant inside and not having to fill the entire thing with dirt. It seems like it was a special plate, deserving of a good cleaning and identifying. I saw a similiar one on Ebay with a selling price of $19.99 and when I went to show my daughter in the morning, the ad was GONE! lol. Alot more searching and I found another one that looked slightly darker, with the price of $358. We are starting new jobs and just bought a mini touring van that was several thousand dollars more than we budgeted and....peanut butter jelly time, peanut butter jelly time again. $20 was thrilling to think of....the other, was a battle of getting our hopes up....and listening to what to look for . I will send photos of our finds and if you have the time ..to give me an idea of the worth of each, that I could ask for each, online and at yard sales, I would appreciate it awesomely. No pity....but I got hit by a car in a crosswalk and the recovery seems endless, finances ruined and time to be a fox...aaaaaaagggain- figuring out a maze or countless of them, daily. People like you, offering your knowledge in this area,what you do well and freely is truly AMAZING! Sometimes, thru this, too, finding faith in humanity just doesn't happen. You are an example of the "Great!" America needs be . Bless you!

Hi , i have a vase that i bought some tears ago at an op shop.. i know the lady who donated it and she said that her parents bought it in the 50's on a trip to China. It has a qianlong porcelain mark . And is hand painted but it is grey blue but there are no signs of purposely fake imitation marks

If a vase is 30 years old has a good foot but has another little circle in the middle of the foot what is the reason for that.i have one with good white base . When did the fakes enter north America? The flowers on the vase has flowers painted on it but the paint goes the lines which makes me think it's a fake

Isn't 32:55 probably republic? The enamels have that quality about them and the piece overall is actually pretty well done, of course Qianlong marks are also very common during this period. A whole other cross over area from genuine QIanlong to Republic to modern copies.
@PeterCombs
@PeterCombs 6 жыл бұрын
I do know what you mean, however, the heavy paste and potting and the poor glazing of the bottom with all those "pits" coupled with that rather rounded " fat" footrim is more typical of modern fakes. Republic examples emulating Qianlong pieces were typically done with a much neater finish on the base, a very even green glaze on base and inside the mouth. The foot rim were also much tidier. The yellow glaze here and stiff drawing is also problematic. The Chinese fakers have caught onto this more recently and are making pieces much closer to Republic copies. Best Peter

Watching the video around 14:29, I can't help but wonder how these museums obtained the beautiful antique vases. History tells us that the Forbidden City and Summer palaces were looted of their treasures and set on fire by allied soldiers around the time of the Opium War.
@PeterCombs
@PeterCombs 5 жыл бұрын
Much of it was, of course, looted, mostly by the French at that time. They held auctions in China and in France afterward. Bear in mind, the Chinese skinned alive a couple French officers who went to negotiate with the Emporer, he got insulted and ordered their "deaths by a thousand cuts" and then sent the corpses back to the French...it went over very badly. Years later the Empress Dowager extended olive brnches and re-established friendly relations..

Ok I'm confused and really not being rude. At 35:21 the bottom of that jar is brown and I thought that is an indication of a fake? What am u missing?
@PeterCombs
@PeterCombs 6 жыл бұрын
The bottom of the pot at 35;21 shows what actual oxidization looks like from being fired, the one after shows how they look when oxidization has been simulated with staining on a modern example. It can be a subtle difference at times. If you pause the vide between the two it becomes more evident. Also, you'll notice the shaping of the foot on the real piece when it was trimmed before it was fired. Hope this helps, Peter
