Nobody's perfect, and the last one in the row is me, but the way I underestimated this piece and particularly this fugue for some years, even was surprising to me... !
Of course, it's Mozart's fault!
In a letter to his sister (who asked him constantly keyboard pieces with interesting harmonies and counterpoint), he apologized for only sending this manuscript, he had not enough time to write something better...
The fantasy/prelude is rather special, brilliant, but the fugue is a master piece in counterpoint. We can only regret Mozart didn't compose his own well-tempered clavier!
Interesting to see how the prelude tend to lean towards typical pianoforte writing, very well possible on the clavichord, but the broken chords would make great effect on the pf too. But: Nannerl didn't have a pianoforte, as Mozart himself had not yet, or just a very short time his Walter piano. It shows the exchange-ability of this keyboard music, especially in the 2d half of the 18th century and certainly in Vienna.

Amazing composition. A real tribute to Bach on a time he was barely considered. Mozart, the first Bachian composer to acknowledge and acquire Bach's legacy. And this is not the only example.

So well played, such a beautiful, balanced instrument, so skilled its creator; humbling.

The Prelude feels like a happy child trying the contradicting registers of the instrument - very playful. The Fugue, however, feels almost modern, almost a 20th century theme. I guess your special way of playing it (like for ex., the half-staccato in the arpeggi-passages), and the sound of the instrument itself, make this unique piece worthwhile hearing. Bravo! Thanks for uploading.

@George Fredric Handel No need of so many question-marks. One or two are enough to get the point... Anyway, I should have add "from around 0:54 and on" and omit the word "happy child": "very playful" was enough to contradict the prelude with the "almost modern" feeling the fugue gave me (and yes, this is not a real contradiction in academic style, just a personal subjective impression of mine :) ) Thanks for making me re-think about my ill choosing of words in this comment.

As happy as I am to hear this work so well-performed on the clavichord, I must remark that the warmth of this recording is very pleasing. The clavichord sound varies greatly depending on the listener's (microphone's) position relative to the instrument. It is difficult to record well, but here especially one can hear the fundamental tone in the warm sound of wood, the tiny percussive impact of tangent, the silvery buzz of the upper harmonics and the echoes of the 'cathedral' of strings from bridge to tuning pins. What a beautiful voice this instrument has!

Currently learning this piece and I really enjoy and prefer your interpretation better than others I have heard - your choice of tempi for both works is excellent! Although, I have a question, is the fugue really a fugue or is it just in the 'style of a fugue?'
@AuthenticSound

+Danimar da Silva he was a genius of course, able to understand and adapt with light speed. That renewal for the baroque would set trough very much to the early 19th century. I am recording, one of the next week, some preludes and fugues written by... Carl Czerny and, ... not bad at all, on the contrary!

Wonderful music. I was wondering if the piano in close proximity to the clavichord might be altering the sound through sympathetic vibration.

Hi Richard, that's a great thought! In fact for the recording of the Bach Partitas (they'll be released in August), I had the piano open with the sustaining pedal down, it did make a (slight) difference!

Thank you, Jack. Normally, in the other video's, you won't see the mic's. However, I sometimes get the question of microphone positioning, and for this particular recording, which was made during the day, so with possible noise from outside, I placed them really close to the instrument. And since this recording was made in day light, more of the instrument could be seen, and so... there was no escape! But most of the times you will not see them, or just a glimpse! All best wishes, Wim

What an interesting piece of music. The fugue, in parts, is rather weak, which is surprising, (from Mozart)... from 8:50 to 9:50,... to borrow commentary from Glen Gould, on Bach's early fugue on his name: B A C H theme ,... "he comes-up with a phrase, and coins it, and can't let go of the currency" or something to that effect.... Very nice instrument and recording,... it does seem to have gone, a little off tune by the middle of the recording, but I guess that is a weakness of Clavichords.
@AuthenticSound
@AuthenticSound 7 жыл бұрын
You know, Mozart wrote to his sister that next time, she'd have something better, since he had no time (:-)). No, my clavichord is not to weak to give those fortes, I was still using a kind of tempered tuning at the time, which results in some too small of an intervals for this music (that, as I learned on the go, obviously was written with equal temp. in mind).

Mozart was studying baroque style at the time, this is more like a student work and is still better than Chopin's fugue in A minor, or Schubert's fugue in E minor
@vincentflack34

It is just the seeming weakness of the fugue, which I myself noticed years ago, that opens our ears. Mozart's fugues are not fugues, his sonatas not sonatas, his symphonies not symphonies, his operas not operas, etc. It is all pure music, of a heavenly height. This goes for all his music from the earliest juvenilia, to the late great compositions that are yet for us in our time far in the future.
@voxveritatis3815
@voxveritatis3815 5 жыл бұрын
Here you go again trying to discredit great master Mozart. The fugue is not weak at all, obviously your hearing is. Many who have underestimated Mozart's music spend a hard time when performing it. No one is bringing Bach up, and no one here wants to for one simple reason: this is about the best composer ever: Wolfang Amadeus Mozart. Yes yes yes...Bach's music is so "mathematically perfect", but also predictable, often overkill , and undoubtedly pretentious, composed to be unattainable for humans according to Bach himself. Make no mistake: this is Mozart. He composed for the lettered and the uneducated. For God and for mankind. In short, Mozart's music is musically perfect. "All you can do is underestimate Mozart until you try his music" - Nikolaus Harnoncourt.
