Series Disclaimer:
It is easy to say or write that historical metronome marks point to super fast, oftentimes impossible tempi. It is much hard - impossible often - to really show it. In this series we take performances of well and lesser known musicians and simply compare their tempi with the authentic, original metronome marks. Not to criticize the tempo decisions those musicians made, simply to see if those claims hold any water.
Beethoven's fifth symphony, as all the other symphonies were transcribed by Franz Liszt in 1863. Recently Wolfgang Weller played the fifth symphony here on this channel in a co-publication with the recording on his channel, applying, as we do, the WBMP ( • How Fast did Beethoven... ). Some viewers referred to the recordings made by Cyprien Katsaris as to show that a single beat reading just was possible. But is it? Is Katsaris matching the tempi Beethoven gave (and Liszt just copied?). It is pretty impressive and fast. Yes, but do they match? Or not?
If not, we might have something to explain since according to Liszt these symphonic transcriptions were made to be ... sight-readable for good conservatory students...!
