Eddie Huang has been an attorney, drug dealer, sneaker salesman, TV host, streetwear clothing designer and blogger. Today, he’s the bestselling author of Fresh Off the Boat, adapted into a much-watched ABC sitcom, host of Viceland’s Huang’s World - which explores food, subcultures and identity politics - and the chef and co-owner of BaoHaus, a popular New York City restaurant featuring Taiwanese-Chinese steamed buns or bao. He joins us for a conversation about his unconventional success and his new memoir "Double Cup Love: On the Trail of Family, Food, and Broken Hearts in China", which follows him on a quest to his ancestral homeland to find out how his food rates in China.

Love Eddie Huang. Would love to see him explore Cambodian culture a little more though. It never gets mentioned in the bigger scheme when anything Asian is talked about as a whole.

I wonder how Eddie ever reconciled marijuana with his mother. My Taiwanese mother hates weed and we haven't talked for over a decade because of this. I welcome any advice on this dilemma. Thanks.

One of my friends who had parents against weed is a very successful glassblower now! He makes some of the best rigs and bongs in the weed industry and his parents are all for it! Do something with you're life. Nobody wants a stoner that does nothing...

@@burritoskater I know this comment is old as hell but I agree. It wasn't until I started to do something with my life that they overlooked such things as smoking weed.

despite all the love I have with Eddie, I don't find his generalization of Chinese people even slightly accurate tbh. There are "cats" in ANY country that are mules, that lacks opportunities, that could have their lives taken by maniacs. You are fortunate to have such a wonderful platform to be a voice for asian americans, that only shows what a hardworking person as an individual you are. Not everyone. I remember on another interview Eddie mentioned one of his friends that was consumed by his up bring environment which totally lacks opportunities that he hesitate to take a leap for a basketball scholarship

The lost chinaman of Dipset. I loved the first book, loved his show, then Eddie felt the need to take upon the burden of a self righteous social justice crusade. Which in fact, on principal, that alone I would have no issue with. The problem is Eddie is the embodiment of what he despises, a living contradiction, a hypocrite.

i don't buy all this third culture talk he is going on about. wherever you are raised, in those formative years, that is what you are. too much over-thinking about identity, to anyone outside of the usa this guy is a typical showboating american. he should be happy and proud of that. ofcourse its cool to stay connected your heritage but i don't see eddy living in taiwan or china. the guy loves america!
@eddyt81
@eddyt81 8 жыл бұрын
i think hes saying just enough about identity. i was born to chinese parents who immigrated to vietnam when they were young. my last name is vietnamese but they prefer to be considered chinese, and me being born in arizona and not being able to speak chinese/vietnamese at all. so this raises the question, am i chinese, vietnamese, or american? id say identity is different for everyone, and while some may not have to think about it as much, its definitely a discussion worth talking about. which i believe he does well.
@barrelrolldog
@barrelrolldog 8 жыл бұрын
+Edward Trinh it doesn't raise the question, you are american. im not sure about your parents. someone who has lived in different countrys while they were growing up could definitely make an argument for being inbetween on being a third culture or something.
@eddyt81
@eddyt81 8 жыл бұрын
sure, i agree to some extent that i'm american because the environments surrounding me promote it and i was fortunate to take some thoughts and ideas from it. the environment that didn't though was my family. the lessons that were taught to me when i was very young suggested that i go about handling things differently, from my values and traditions to how i look and approach tasks. i was even bullied and made fun of because of what i believed in (probably not to the extent that eddie huang did). theres definitely a clashing of cultures there which i question still. this is what i think eddie is trying to answer in terms of identity. whether the immigrants from this generation and the ones following it should abandon their ancestor's past, hang onto it, or try to incorporate both into their lives

+Edward Trinh i dont agree with him about keeping the culture alive. its cool to introduce that culture to the west and all that but the fact is the culture is alive, here in asia. if you care that much then live in asia. does eddy live in china? no he lives in america
@eddyt81
@eddyt81 8 жыл бұрын
i don't think hes saying that the culture is dead in america, but rather misunderstood and/or misrepresented which hes trying to show through his book, show, and interviews. i also don't think its fair to say that if hes in america, he should have to conform to what hes being told. im sure if he wanted, he could move back to china/taiwan, but he already is established there so why would he do that?
