All I can say is this was a very interesting, educational, and worthwhile experience in the end.
It did not start off that way! When Gabe's bonus mom and I realized he needed his hair cut the afternoon before a big event it was too late to take him to his fabulous hairdresser, Ping! We decided to go down the street to a barbershop that Gabe had been to another time. The barber, Philip was very accomodating and was able to get Gabe's haircut while standing in a corner! We loved Philips ability to go with the flow and his contagious laugher. This time wasn't as easy. It was not the fault of Phillip. We had not mentioned that Gabe had a fear of the electric clippers and when he took them out Gabe was done! We could not let Gabe go to the Noah Kahan concert with his hair looking worse than ever! I tried to get in touch with my own hairdresser, but she was unavailable. Then we drove to another barbershop called Floyd's 99 Barbershop. We knew nothing about this place in advance. I walked in and spoke to Lilly. Told her the situation, that Gabe is autistic and nonspeaking. He had a bad haircut that needed to be fixed. She told me that she has a lot of experience working with individuals with autism! Amazing! She fit him in at 8pm and we could not believe how well this one went! This barbershop was perfect for Gabe. The loud music and decor of various musicians plastered on the walls made him feel at home! Lilly made sure to take her time. She explained everything she was about to do as the haircut took place. The electric clippers are always the biggest challenge, but she showed him all the different ones and let him feel them against his hand before starting. We were amazed that Gabe sat so calmly as she used them for a prolonged period of time! He needed lots of breaks throughout, but remained calm even when he was nervous. At the end she used the scissors and styled his hair! He looked amazing and was all set to see the Noah Kahan concert!

Lilly was what made the difference! Her demeanor, her whole self, the way she connected with Gabe through touch, as a psychiatric nurse, mental health counselor, and nurse educator, those skills just can’t be taught, they are an innate gift. Thank you for sharing this precious video. LOVE it and Gabe. (Also, Grammy to 2 autistic boys, the youngest is very similar to Gabe. ❤)

I remember my childhood barber doing the same thing with the clippers on my hand to me when I was very young and afraid of the clippers. He was a very kind man and patient. He cut my hair until he retired when I was in my early teens. I think that barber at Floyds was wonderfully sensitive and intuitive. I think that it helped that she recognized and spoke directly to Gabe, always treating him as her "client." When I watch your videos, I try to imagine how frustrating it must be to be Gabe in situations where he cannot say, "wait a minute" or "I'm not ready yet." Bless him, maybe the next time he gets his haircut, the clippers will not be as daunting for him.

I have autism myself, i don't have any issues with any scissors or electric clippers, etc but i know how it feels for Gabe! If i remember correctly i was a little more scared of getting a haircut when i was younger but that's grown out of me by now, i've even been to a hair saloon completely by myself for the first time ever which went really well! One of the things that always makes me way more comfortable at a hair saloon, or pretty much everywhere where you book appointments, etc is to have a women cut my hair, or whatever. I just feel like women understand autistic people *so* much more than males.

“Hair saloon.” Lol, it’s “salon.” Though, I love this. I think “The Saloon” would be SUCH a cute name for a Western-themed salon/barbershop. Thanks for such a great idea (I’m a hairstylist/barber. I use to work for the company Gabe is getting hair haircut at - Floyd’s; a rock n’ roll themed barbershop). I didn’t know I am in the spectrum, when I worked there. I was a hairstylist (meaning, I was trained to focus on women’s services), though, thanks to Floyd’s - fell in love with barbering, and working with males. I think women tend to have a lighter hand hand, as well. I’m disabled, now, though - who knows, perhaps I’ll open “The Saloon,” one day. I am a country-Western gal, at heart - and I am even from an old gold-mining town, in California. Thanks again, for such a great idea. 💛

My son is not on the autism spectrum but he has tics and sensory issues due to severe adhd. He’s gotten much better but I remember taking him for one of his first hair cuts, and I told the stylist he didn’t like his ears being touched and was afraid of the clippers and she did the same thing with him: showed him the clippers, let him touch them and feel them on his skin, she asked whenever she got close to his ears if it was ok. She was so patient and kind with him in that one visit that he never had issues at the barber again.

I don’t have a child with autism but in my free time I often watch video like these to educate on how to be more understanding and helpful when I’m around children and adult with autism. There’s been such a rise in people diagnosed with autism and we’re so much more advanced than passed decades that I feel like we all have an obligation to educate ourself on how to help integrate others who could use our understanding of their needs to thrive in this world. There is no “normal” anymore. Everyone is so different in so many ways that ‘normal’ doesn’t really define anyone. So I thank you for sharing what a real family looks like with a child who is on the spectrum. We need exposure in order to learn how we can be better.

@tayzonday Same! I haven't let anyone else cut my hair since i was 15 when i buzzed my hair off in the middle of the night so my mom wouldn't make me have it cut. I thought she was going to murder me lol. I would find ways to avoid my triggers, or otherwise was just masking, then having my meltdowns in bathrooms and such. I often have a full blown meltdown at doctor's appointments, and it's mortifying. Hope life is easier for you these days! So proud of you for being so outspoken and supportive of others on the spectrum. 💖🙏🕊

Everyone did awesome! With a haircut, touching the scalp and hair can be overwhelming too. The scalp’s sensitive. Every time you run your hand/comb/brush against the hair/scalp, that could be a lot of sensory input. It is for me, at least. I love how she asked; it’s a great way to get his consent and let him prepare for the stimulation. 🎉 When people suddenly touch me or there’s sudden noises, smells, visual things, textures, my body goes into shock. Gets confused and “runs around” panicked. My body and mind don’t understand what just happened and can’t process or organize the change fast enough. Even with “tiny” changes, it feels like an explosion slamming into my body. Most days, I feel like I’m drowning all day. So it helps a lot when people give me notice. Give me time so my body doesn’t go into panic mode. I love how Gabe advocated for himself and soldiered through. He handled the sounds of the other blow dryer, people talking on the phone, etc., well too. 🥳 Thank his moms and the hair dresser for going at his speed-not saying it’s not a big deal. For them, it might not be. For him, it might be explosions against/inside his mind and body. 👍🏾

I'm a verbal adult on the spectrum, but I sometimes lose my speaking ability, more so when i was a kid. I just wanted to say, the work you are doing, showing other parents of autistic kids and young people, how to parent with compassion- is so so so valuable. Its incredibly disturbing how much content exists out there of misinformed caretakers who show absolutely no respect for the wants and needs of their child. And even punish them when they react strongly to certain situations. I myself cannot handle the noise of the electric clipper right next to my ear- to me, its so loud that it is physically painful. So when a child refuses to have it used on them, they arent being “difficult” they are begging not to be in pain. You two are such amazing parents and educators cause you understand that just because someone isnt verbal- it does NOT mean that an individual isnt commnicating how they feel about something. Gabes reaction to the clippers was clear as day, and very understandable. Thank you for respecting him. I wish you all the best and good health.

3:21 - if looks could injure.... Probably a small blessing at that moment that Gabe is non-verbal. 😂😂😘 I'm highly functioning these days (at 50 years old), but far less was understood about autism when I was a child, and I was raised with nowhere near the supportive community you all seem to have grown for Gabe. Haircuts were the worst, but I was simply restrainer, and the trauma haunts me to this day. So much so that I had no problem whatsoever when I began balding in my mid-30's. For me, it wasn't the clippers, but the sensory overload of what felt to be a million needles piercing my skin each time a clump of freshly cut hair would fall into my shirt. Stay blessed! Edited: I wrote the previous content before having finished the video and had to come back to just take a moment to gush over the angel you found inside of Floyd's. What an amazing professional! She can't possibly be compensated highly enough.

I didn’t know I am on the spectrum, when I worked there - and the loud music and hustle and bustle of the garage doors being open to the street could be a bit overstimulating, at times (I absolutely loved it all, though, being I was new to hairstyling - it slowed me down, a bit). Gabe is such a handsome fella. EDIT: That’s great they didn’t have the music blasting, so, it wasn’t too overstimulating.

My son was institutionalized, in the Neurobehavioral clinic at Kennedy Krieger Institute for 8 months. They took him to the White Marsh Mall. They had a shop called Cartoon Cuts. He got to watch his best pal Barney while getting a hair cut. It worked!

My Son was the same. Now he is 26yrs and has long hair and a beard. I must say he lets his hair and beard get a trim. But nothing close to his face. Your son is very handsome. Bless 🙏🏻❤️

This made me cry. Such a simple thing for some is so scary for others. Having a kind compassionate person makes things so simple

People don’t understand something as simple as a haircut can upset them. When we finally found one that my uncle would sit thru and liked, he became his full time barber. Thank u for sharing!

I want to thank the Barber for having the patience to handle him. As someone who has mild Autism I can truly appreciate what this barber was able to do. So many people in the service industry just don't have the patience or tolerance to work with us. Again thank you.

How amazing is this hairdressers. She is like a nurse. She has one eye on the haircut and one eye on Gabe.

Holding some ones hand does miracles for everybody! Feeling the support is healing for every human being! We should do that in more situations! I once asked a nurse to talk to me during an operation under local anesthesia because i was anxious.

Gabe did so well ... I'm so proud of him !! ❤ ... This is Daniel & I watched some of your live videos and really enjoy the progress that Gabe makes ... I have been retired from the state of Arkansas Dept. of Human Services since 2015, working 28 years with autistic children and adults ... I would of loved to work with Gabe ... He is so awesome and appears so pleasant to be around. 😊
