Gabe is autistic and nonspeaking. He has struggled for years to get his hair cut, but has overcome this challenge! Now he sees two amazing hairdressers who he feels very comfortable with! This is Lilly Nizer and she specializes with neurodivergent individuals! Lilly gave Gabe a Modern Mullet!

My brother and I both have ASDs. My brother has very high functioning autism and I have Asperger's Syndrome with social phobia. When my little brother was very little he would try to bash his head on the ground and occasionally bite himself and sometimes others when upset. A doctor, and some other people asked my mom if she put a helmet on him and she was offended. What we did as a family was to hold him against us when he would try and harm himself. We'd soothingly tell him that we loved him and after a while eventually stopped doing it altogether. He also had trouble with potty training and speech. After he started school he started doing different kinds of therapy and he made unbelievable progress in every area. He never was in special education and eventually he started doing better than the other kids with schoolwork. In 9th grade his teacher developed a special plan/program for him so he would not be bored with the work. He was part of a group of 3 who she did this for. He also blossomed socially, making many friends and even having a couple girlfriends throughout highschool. Now he is 24 and has been working at Meijer for three and a half years. He makes $23/hour full time. Because of how particular and 'by the book he is, which is a common trait in people with his condition, he is the trainer of new employees. What I'm saying is this; autism and other disorders on the spectrum doesn't mean that their/your lives are over with and that they won't be able to lead a normal life. I myself was mute until the age of four, until I started an early childhood program. It's not that I didn't show any emotions;I just didn't speak. I started speaking shortly after I started attending and it was like a highly educated adult. The teacher, Donnette (only I was allowed to call her by her first name) lovingly called me her little professor. I also had trouble going to the bathroom, which I later found scientists said is because of the brain's disconnect with the intestines by not sending the signal to go to the bathroom. I had to spend a week in the hospital when I was five because I didn't go to the bathroom after my mom and the doctor tried everything. But, later on things improved greatly although I still have problems to this day. I'm now 38 and will be 39 on Valentine's Day. My life hasn't always been easy but I have no problem living on my own and taking care of everything a 'normal' adult does. Joel Malone

I so appreciate stylists who focus on their customer, and give positive reinforcement. So many feel a need to have an ongoing conversation with the parent or others in the shop, and that can be upsetting to the one getting a haircut. All children and youth do better in a calm, quiet environment. When the loud music came on in the other room that was almost too much stimulation for me--I am glad Gabe was not distracted. He is so handsome!

Hi! I have a brother very much like Gabe. He’s non verbal 99 percent of the time but he can say words like “no” “light” “car” “home” he also has echolalia He uses pictures to communicate or hand gestures. Autism is a very wide spectrum, some of more verbal then others. Some will learn to say more words and phrases, some may never talk at all. But I’m so glad in todays society we have so much more tools to help with communication ❤

'Seems like a good match you've found, and I hope that she knows the tremendous value of what she's chosen to do (and is rewarded!). GABE WORE THE CAPE!!! ...and I'm sittin' here in my own space, thinking of Gabe and hoping that HE got to celebrate somehow -- I, so much, want for Gabe to benefit from feeling good about himself *from inside-out (not simply complimented)! He has been trying things that he had refused "for forever" (and he will have a different life, for each thing that he blows-through.....seemingly "outta nowhere!")! Go Gabe!

We have a stylist that is fantastic as well. I’m not always a fan of the cut but he does exactly what my son wants. He comes in on his day off to provide a haircut for him., so the salon is quiet. These types of people are few and far between ❤ as a little tip: let her know somethings that Gabe has really been enjoying and have her chat about that during his cut. And have a photo of what you want his hair to loo like. It really helps her also be able to find some things to distract and also get to know him so he always knows he’s safe with her. Our guy always puts a movie or tv show on while cutting my sons hair (he has a TV in his salon) I’m not sure what Gabe prefers but my son doesn’t want to know what’s next unless it’s the clippers. Unsolicited advice, as of course, you know you’re guy best ❤
