Autism in girls is a huge missed diagnosis and here is why! Download my FREE Autism Life Hacks Book: www.autismtips.net/
Autism Alert Card: theaspieworld.com/product/aut...
Autism in girls is actually proving to be more common that autism in males.
Sounds shocking as the entire time up until now, we have had professionals say that the ratio of boys to girls on the spectrum is higher in boys.
This is not the case, but has been for the lack of understanding and here are 5 reasons that autistic girls do not get diagnosed.
Most health care professionals are not trained in autism in girls and follow older documents based on males.
Miss-diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder
Miss-Diagnosed with ADHD
Masking: The patient masks and the assessor is not trained to understanding this.
Dismissal of major issues. Many parents and professionals dismiss issues in girls leading to no referral for diagnosis.

I don’t know how many times I went to doctors for help for my daughters and myself only to have doctors give excuses and refuse to give referrals. It wasn’t until one of my daughters ended up with burnout that a doctor finally helped her. She was finally assessed to be AuDHD when she was about 30 and because of her I have also now been assessed at 59 with autism. It is sad it has taken so long for this to be addressed. I know when I presented myself and daughters in the past, doctors did not have the awareness that some do now. But more awareness needs to happen. Channels like this are great and I am learning so much. But one thing that still bugs me is that when people study psychology, autism is not a core subject. Studying autism is optional so people are still being misdiagnosed by professionals.

I'm female and I was diagnosed with bipolar, when I was about 25 years. Some time later, they took me off bipolar medicines because they did nothing to me - except I gained weight about 20 kg in six months after starting those meds and still did not eat a lot... I even spoke to my psychiatrist at the time, that I think that I am on the spectrum and she just dismissed me...and I just sat there screaming inside my head that "Can you not see thorough all this facade I am keeping up?! This masking?!" Fast forward about 10 years. I went to the doctor again. And took off that mask. Or at least a little bit of it. Enough for them to give me that diagnose I needed for myself to be at peace with who I am. To forgive myself a lot of sh*t. To maybe to start living my life and try to achieve something now that I know my limits. And the silly thing is - they had 6 hours reserved for the diagnosis and it took only 3. The 4th hour was to tell the diagnosis and talk about what now - because there is really no support for adults with diagnosis who can keep a job but has no education etc and no way to achieve anything in professional-life because the work takes all my strength so I have no strength to apply to school. I also have dyscalculia. Some level of dyslexia (and dysgrafia). Probably because autism spectrum I more likely have also dyspraxia. And I think, like you said autism and adhd/add have a strong link between them. I have taken several tests and it seems, that I would also have one of those also. So good luck for me to trying to get something done with my life.. Number 5 btw - thanks for talking about this subject! And it goes for so many other things. In medical field (simple example periods) but other aspects in life to these days like for example mansplaining waht it means to be a woman.

That really interesting about bi-polar. I was diagnosed at 19 with Cyclothymia (bi-polar 3). I was assessed for ADHD at 13 but it was decided I didn’t have it as I wasn’t “hyperactive”. At 35, I’m now 40, I was re diagnosed with ADHD instead of Cyclothymia.🤔

Wild thing...my specialist agreed that masking was a thing, and then one of the things that kept me from getting the diagnosis was that I made eye contact. 🙃 My so-called "eye contact" was looking around and at the floor with quick shots of looking in the direction of her face and making actual full eye contact maybe 1% of the time. Like....huh?!

How infuriating! Conversely, too much eye contact can be a sign of autism and/or masking.

Haha, mee too. I make eye contact by looking in peoples third eye. Very excellent way to not-look-eyes but in a way still take "eye contact" 😉

Same here, yo I’m looking at your lips or your eyebrows 99% of the time. That’s why I don’t remember what you look like and contributes a great deal to my face blindness, though sometimes even when I’m looking at a person I can mistake them.

I completely agree with you, I mask/camaflodge...a lot & then I end up really really really criticizing myself about doing it when I get home since I get stuck with nicknames that so aren't me....😖😑 I just don't know how not to mask.....it makes me look & seem like someone I'm not.....

Thank you for this video. I am diagnosed ADHD at 42 but I know I’m on the ASD spectrum but I can’t seem to get diagnosed for it. In fact when I went to get diagnosed by a female she made me feel like she thought I was faking it claiming she knew many ASD diagnosed individuals and had a radar for it. But invalidated my concerns in the first session. This was so heartbreaking as I am 46 and have struggled silently my whole life and now that I finally found out why, took the time to research and understand it and finally found the courage to seek help, it turns out I’ve become too good at masking and people can’t see or believe the issues I’m facing everyday of my life. But have no problem labelling me as weird or quirky, or lazy or rude or unsociable or thoughtless or scattered or… or… or insert judgments. It’s not fair. I’m just glad I had a son as he was able to be diagnosed at seven and not have to struggle like me. I will make sure he gets the support he needs. If I had a daughter it wouldn’t have been as easy.

I was diagnosed with Borderline and Bipolar 2. I couldn't get long-term inpatient treatment for my suicidal feelings and many attempts because they don't let Borderline people in these places because they cause so much trouble. I got my diagnosis last week. Not Borderline. Not Bipolar 2. I'm Autistic and happy to know what is going on. BTW, I'm 43 black woman it happened to be an intern that clocked me. Obviously he was young and, so, taught the right knowledge! Things are changing

Masking? I’m 69 and remembering that as being new and trying things out just to get together to know people outside of work. New nursing job, 30 yrs old, got invited after Night Shift to go roller skating ( never done that) I was assured not hard. Last circle round fell, broke my elbow. But became friends with all those ladies. Autism today reminds me of my 10 week psych rotation. Everyone swore they had every diagnosis. BTW- my grandson diag with autism at 3 now almost 7. He’s genius at reading, math, memory, playing piano since 3 with perfect pitch. Wonderful sensitive, empathetic, but blurts in class.

Yeah to everyone else that’s what it seems like but if you’re autistic you know it’s complicated. Not easy at all and it gets worse as you age, you become more and more toddler like I feel. My food aversions are getting out of hand but I can’t change it. It’s not at all as “just being new” I wish

I've been diagnosed with ADHD and have been taking stimulant medication since July. It has literally changed my life in terms of executive function, my space is clean and functional which fills me with the most joy that i cant even express....however... it has revealed my autistic traits that ive only just realised i have. Now im not as despondent about my lack of social ability. But now im worried that i should be more worried and try to adopt a coping mechanism to combat this.

That can’t be true that they didn’t know because my sister was diagnosed with autism 40 years ago. However she is severely autistic no speech. So apparently girls could only be diagnosed back then if they were so severe? Apparently they told my mum woman were 1 in 10 every autistics back then. 😆🤣 My mum took me to get assessed and this is another frustrating thing and I wonder how many parents out there had this and still have this. They told my mum that I wasn’t autistic because I was copying my sisters behaviour (I wasn’t my behaviour was nothing like hers!) I often think would it have been any different had I known sooner or how it actually happened and I came to the conclusion myself after my son was diagnosed. 🤔

Um, Autistic males don't need to be talking on autistic females. For one, YOU are NOT a neuropsychologist. For two, we can handle it on our own, thanks anyway.
