Meg, I have to share with you. In the middle of watching your video about autistic meltdowns I realized I had to share it with my mom. I sent her the link and started dreading her response but the next morning she really surprised me. She was really excited. She said she went and watched a whole bunch of your other videos and she realized how much it describes of me and who I was as a child. She shared the videos with my dad and they've been incredibly validating. My mom even apologized for not seeing it before, and that she used to just think autism was about not looking at people in the eyes and being lost in their own world (which, to be fair, also describes me as a child. she constantly got on my case for staring at the ground.) She said she thinks you're adorable and very informative. Thank you for your videos. Theyve helped me a lot the past few weeks.

I’m currently looking for a job and online applications kill me. You enter your first name and surname, and then there’s a checkbox next to the statement, “I have a preferred name.” Every time, I have to remind myself that they mean a name that’s *different* from the one you just entered.

Something about not applying rules about plurality between Latin and Greek, but I can’t think of what it was! I think many job descriptions are overstated because people get in a meeting and list off everything they would really love to have in a perfect world, and that becomes requirements. I also think some are overstated just to cut down on the underqualified overconfident people who'll take a shot at anything. Real truth is that a lot of the people who match the full qualifications turn around and walk away when they see the pay range. Sometimes they don't and the company gets a great hire for a two thirds of what they should pay. So why would a company ask for less? It's a mess and I hate it.

I get what you said about thinking that people dislike you. I think it's a big part of anxiety that's also pretty common in many autistic people. My social anxiety has always been really bad and I constantly worry if I'm bothering people. Rejection sensitive dysphoria (RSD) could be a big part of it too and I think it's probably common in autistic people too as well as people with ADHD. I definitely have RSD along with autism. Also, don't worry about the black mark, I often stim by twirling my hair and then mess it up too!
@jimwilliams381616 күн бұрын
It took me a long time to conclude this, but I think my amygdala is the biggest factor in dysphoric feelings. When it’s overactive, there’s a pervasive if often vague sense of doom, and it’s going to look for some damned tiger in the bushes. That I screwed up and people are unhappy with me is a common tiger to think I see.

My bedroom was flooding/flooded. I woke up in the morning got up, and stepped into a soggy carpet. My late dog had a propensity for having intentional accidents, so I thought he pee'd on the floor. I looked at him and said, "Pierre, why didn't you wake me up to go outside?" He gave me a confused look. As the day proceeded the soggy carpet spread farther and farther (or I noticed that more of the carpet was soggy). I kept blaming the dog for continuing to pee on the carpet. It took me a long while before I realized that the entire floor was soggy and my apartment was flooding again (first time in the bedroom, 7th time in the overall apartment). I felt so bad once I realized that it wasn't Piere! By the way, Piere weighed between 8-10 pounds and was a Chijuajua and Papillion mix. I honestly was beginning to think I needed to take the poor little guy to the vet because he was peeing so much! 😂🤣😂 I am sure he thought I was losing my marbles completely that day.

I’ve had coworkers who pretended to be good at things they weren’t. I don’t get why employers would want someone who isn’t straight about their capabilities. I have heard the “lacks confidence” argument, but it seems to me that being unwilling to fairly assess your abilities suggests lack of confidence. In the end, I suppose the employer wants someone who can sell themselves well. It’s true that I’m a horrible salesperson, and it has sometimes made me less effective in my job, darn it.
@Robert_McGarry_Poems16 күн бұрын
Or... companies know that honesty and integrity are signs of emotionally intelligent people who might cause more HR/PR problems for them in the long run. So they make up this ethos about "selling yourself" to the company... with the goal that they can pick and choose their subordinates easier. Lying isn't an economic trait. Selling yourself in a package that isn't your authentic self to achieve ends that are arbitrarily created by them in the first place creates a false and arbitrarily inflated sense of what is necessary. And chips away at common moral ground. It pits the already working class people against each other, instead of just doing what is right by them. The drop-in-the-bucket fallacy... I should do this because it's what everyone else is already doing. Surely, one person can't affect the whole balance. But everyone thinks that individually about the whole. Otherization in capital clothing.

@@jimwilliams3816Thank goodness not all jobs require being a salesperson
@jimwilliams381616 күн бұрын
@ES1117 agreed. I always knew no one should ever hire me to be a salesman. I’m good at the job I took, but I did travel for work for some years, and it made me more of the “face of the company” that I ought to have been. The exposure caused me to finally notice, in my fifties, finally become fully aware of the extent of my social issues: I would sometimes fly home thinking my boss should never let me near other people again. COVID ended my traveling, and since then I’ve stayed away from clients to the greatest degree possible. It’s better for all concerned. So I don’t get why employers wouldn’t want to know about an employee’s weaknesses. Had I realized them myself, I would have cautioned my boss when discussing job responsibilities. I am good at the actual work I produce, although like Meg I am nit picky and slow.

Regarding perfection, the best realisation I ever had to help me with it was the realisation that perfection isn't real, but rather is just a lie that humans created to tell each other that they aren't good enough. The closest you can get to perfection is to create things that resonate with people. As long as your work resonates with just one person, it's perfect, no matter what everyone else thinks, including you.😊

This look is so striking and beautiful, omg! You always look amazing, but this outfit is speaking to me. You can probably soak the gloves in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent to get some of the extra dye to come out in the water and hopefully the dye remaining in the fabric will set. Then hopefully next time you wear them, there won't be any issues with transfer!

As a non-neurotypical, my secret to going incredibly fast is that you don't try to rush, you try to work hard at a comfortable pace, and before you know it you're done and it's half the expected time for a crew of 3 people instead of just you.

Not me, this very morning, thinking about a video game where neurospicy symptoms present as supernatural characteristics. My idea was autistic lycanthropy but "you gotta invite me in every time" is so UIRTTP/10.

I remember when I had my first job, which was in the computer animation industry. We were all filling out and upgrading our resumes because the project was coming to an end and we all knew that we'd be unemployed as soon as it did (cause studios love to label employees as 1099 when they most def. were not). I could not believe how much lying was taking place. Could not even. x.x And everyone else was doing it. I didnt though cause I couldn't bring myself to. It was at that point I realized maybe there was something off with me.

The proper plural of Octopus is Octopodes. That is not just because it comes from Greek instead of Latin, but because it is a 3rd declension word in either language. You don't use a 2nd declension masculine plural ending on a 3rd declension word.
@alicebthegachaweirdo837816 күн бұрын
Oh, that’s very interesting
@stevekearney323316 күн бұрын
There may be specefic jargons or communities that use octopodes but octopuses is definitely acceptable.
@magister34316 күн бұрын
Similarly, the proper plural of Platypus is Platypodes and the plural or Rhinoceros is Rhinocerotes.
@255lives816 күн бұрын
Why would we use a different language's plural marker for a loan word? Also it only seems to be Greek and Latin words were this matters tsunami doesn't use counters in English nor does moose cause English to become agglutinative.
@kelliehastings16 күн бұрын
I learned this in middle/highschool, so over a decade ago, and at the time loved sharing it with everyone, because octopodes is just a wonderful word in my opinion. My tendency to correct people back then about the proper pronunciation didn’t usually go over well and I never understood why, I just thought it was such a fun fact/word. It makes alot more sense now 😅

Getting a good job is hard, sometimes friends help, my only advice tho is that you'll just apply openly even if you don't match the criteria 100% - you might still land a paid internship or get offered something else if you get to the interview.

Meg, I just wanted to say that my whole life every teacher I had in elementry school told my parents at parent teacher conference that I'm a bit slow with my work. I'm slow with everything. In their minds I should've been spending 2 hours LESS time with my homework.😅 Should have only been 30 minutes, 1 hour at mostb while I was over here spending the rest of the day doing my homework.

Euugh I just don’t get why employer’s literally value lying. For some reason they want you to lie and they are very aware that everyone “showing off” is just lying and exaggerating and for some reason they want those qualities and value them higher than honesty… Corporate employers are so weird. Also majorly relate to the cooking meme, I didn’t realise that was a common experience of austism xD but makes sense… Very much relate to the future plan ideas too. I always feel like I’m so behind on my creative projects and can never get through all my ideas.

The difficulty going to bed is so relatable. Even if I do go to bed, I’m going to lay there for hours not sleeping. But then waking up is equally difficult. My natural rhythm is 2:00 am to 11:00 am, but the world does not function on that schedule, so it’s a never ending fight. Also the job application one is so true. It’s so hard to read all those requirements and still apply. I am grateful for my current job because job hunting is terrible.

Relating too much to the feeling that everyone hates you... I'm a girl in year 10 probably AuDHD somewhere in the process of being assessed but since I was probably about 6 I've struggled with low self esteem and feelings of self hatred and everyone else must hate me it just seemed like the only explanation but it got way worse when I was about 13/14 to the point where my mental health was awful so I'm really grateful I found out about autism (and ADHD) when I did... now trying to work out how the hell I access accomodations and stuff when I mask so everything seems fine and I'm not in such a bad mental state and I don't have a diagnosis and I've got through 10 years of education without support... yeah I need to follow up on the request from about a month ago to speak to safeguarding team I'm just scared to do it coz it's been too long lol

I'm currently in my second bout of searching for a new job since 2020. The first time it took a year and a half and ten thousand applications, out of which there were only a handful of interviews, to get my "current" job, which is currently in limbo as of the past four months, so I've been searching for a new one in that time and again applying to dozens of jobs a day, so hundreds per month, thousands thus far... Anyway the point I'm building up to is that I just apply to anything that looks vaguely like I might possibly be able to do it and then rely on them to decide if they think I look like I might, but often times, and this is on online job application platforms, something is listed not just as a skill that you should have for this position but a REQUIREMENT that you MUST have for this position, like if I try to apply the platform itself will stop me and say "hey you don't have this skill listed, probably don't apply, here are some other jobs instead…" and I COULD click though that but it really really seems like they don't want you to, like this is something to stop even neurotypical people. My understanding is that every single one of these jobs has literally hundreds of applicants within hours of posting it so why they fuck would they give a second look at someone who isn't absolutely the perfect fit.

I also do not like cooking and wish there was someone who could cook for me, and would rather have things (like snacks or whatever) to have so I don’t have to cook/microwave anything and have to wait for my food to be done

strengths and weaknesses in interviews- I worked this out years ago, so no matter which they ask, I say 'I'm lazy'. They are usually shocked at that point, so I smile brightly and explain: I'm lazy, so I hate wasting time at work, which makes me very focussed and efficient so I can get the job done. Which makes it a strength! Works every time
