Meeting my second cousin for the first time on Christmas was wild because I immediately knew they were autistic, they’re 11, I am way older, but we talked about hammer head worms for an hour and then talked about everything and basically didn’t stop talking for 5 hours

I first met my 16yo cousin when my dad took us to a reunion at his sister's house. I'm 17 and we get along really well. We also both love art, and I have half a mind to think he's also autistic, but I haven't been around him enough irl to really tell. I'm glad we get along so well tho, because it's one extra friend for me. I also get along really well with my sister-in-law's half-sister (she's 14-15). She has ADHD and the first time we met, we instantly hit it off and I felt so free to be myself around her. I think it was the first time I ever was able to drop my mask and be my full self. Everyone was shocked at how loud and social I became instantly after we started talking. It's so fun

Can we STOP putting autistic people in boxes? I’m sensory seeking! I love loud music and tight clothes. I’m sick and tired of autistic people being shown as just “meek and quiet” And to be clear, it’s okay to fit into those stereotypes. It’s okay to be quiet and sensory avoidant. It’s okay to like trains and dinosaurs. I just wish we weren’t all put in those boxes

Added annoyance: you can be sensory seeking for some things and sensory avoidant for others, or both depending on finer details of the thing. I don't get why it's treated like a clean binary separation, it's never been that way for me personally.

The thing is, our relation to these stereotypes can be really weird. I'm extraverted with no volume control, but I come across as meek and quiet because I have to shut up completely to avoid annoying people, and because I spend a bunch of time engaged in my special interests instead of with people. Trains and dinosaurs are fairly minor interests for me, but I still spend more time learning about them and know a ton more about them than most people I meet. So do I fit the stereotypes or not?

Listen to soundsoftheforest talk about her caretakers is WILD to me. Like sometimes I genuinely forget that if society properly cared for disabled people, I would actually be able to have qualified professionals help me get through these daily tasks I struggle with. Like oh if I had accomodations, I'd actually be able to go to the doctor's because I wouldn't be treated like a child and sent out without care because I wouldn't be expected to perform the same social gymnastics that neurotypicals can? I'm used to just being left to the wolves.

Yeah, it sounds like a completely different world. I’m incredibly lucky to have a supportive family (I don’t even want to think about where I’d be if I didn’t have them), but any outside support has been mediocre and unreliable at best. Finding someone who is able and wants to help you alone is hard enough, but the turnover rate is also insanely high and doesn’t work well with an autistic brain that craves familiarity and structure.

I only like grocery stores when there almost empty (also because I crave to like stock the shelves) but I completely understand thats how I was after I went to the zoo (although I love the zoo) because they had all the Christmas lights up (like WAY too many lights my opinion) and there was this tunnel that like amplified voices and sounds that was the entrance/exit oh and there was way to many people just in general (if I could exist in a zoo alone where the animals had all the space they could ever need it would be awesome)

Recently I was thinking back on the behaviors of specifically my dads side of the family and looking at it I'm pretty sure I know where the autism came from. My grandpa and older cousin are both fixated on fountain pens and got me and my dad into them, and my other cousin now has a mini geiger counter and has been looking into stuff people used to use radioactive materials in.

Little autism rant about Christmas since I don’t have any friends too tell and my family already knows I got SUCH NICE PRESENTS IM SO SO SO HAPPY, I got 3 things that I already asked for since my family are well off I’m allowed too ask for three expensive things and the rest are surprises o I asked for a weighted blanket, new docs and the LEGO Vespa set, and oh my god my mum outdid herself with the weighted blanket because all I said was that I wanted one that wasn’t mental illness grey like most of the weighted blankets and she’s got me a natural fiber linen one that’s this lovely shade of green and it has glass beads instead of plastic ones that a lot of weighted blankets have 🙂 also I have this’s massive obsession with bunting since it looks so lovely and I could never find any I liked Andy my mum got me bunting... MADE FROM RECYCLED INDIAN SARIS AND ITS SO GORGEOUS, all the flags are made from parts of different saris and they’ve got added tassels and beads And embroidery I cannot get over it I lOve it oh my god💯❗️❗️💢❗️💯 Also my sister got me this fat little crocodile stature he’s so silly, and OH MY GOD my mum got me this massive box of moomin mercy from the moomin shop cause it’s my special interest and I already went too the only 2 moomin shops in London when we went this summer but she got me a groke shirt, little moomintroll winter socks, biscuits, a rotary tea light holder that spins around with the lil characters on it when you light the candle oh my god and such a good bag aswell?? I got so much more but I’m literally so happy about my presents and that my family is so accepting and celebratory about my autistic interests ❗️❗️❗️

Sad right now because I typed a very passionate info dump about the show “Dead End: Paranormal Park” thats on Netflix and its not showing up (think my service is bad) BUT I WILL PREVAIL Its animated (wonderfully) it has TONS and TONS of representation, out of the 4 main human characters 3 of them are POC (including the main love interest for season one) OH AND THAT ROMANCE IS A QUEER ONE- and it gets to exist as a THING without people being like “ew gay people” (Discrimination does exist in the world and one of the main characters transphobic grandmas transphobia GETS TO BE A PLOT POINT) some characters have visible disabilities and THEY ARNT MENTIONED LIKE AS A THING no one there to be like “why are you “some form of disability” there disabilities just get to EXIST!! One of the main characters is AUTISTIC (although the show never actually states this but it is really clear) and has a very clear special interest (which happens to be a person) which does end up going a certain way BUT BARNEY (one the main characters) has a talking dog thats possessed by an like ancient demon (played by ALEX BRIGHTMAN who also played BETTLEJUICE ON BROADWAY) and the other non human main character is a SARCASTIC (or what I think is sarcasm who knows at this point) DEMON who CONSUMES TRASH WITH A PASSION (shes my favorite) OH AND THERES A MUSICAL EPISODE!! even if you dont watch the show the songs “MY FRANKENSTEIN” (REALLY GOOD mentions main characters special interest ITS EMPOWERING (to the main character) BUT SAD) and IN THE DRIVER SEAT (ALEX BRIGHTMAN OUTDID HIMSELF its a B O P the Beetlejuice voice gets to come out- GREAT 100% WOULD RECOMMEND) and ALSO (did you think i would be done) somewhere down there! Its about my favorite demon girl singing about how she wishes she could be in hell and how great it would be but she CANT because shes trapped on the mortal plain (THEY CAN ALL BE FOUND OF SPOTIFY OR KZbin) ALSO the show lives UP to its name PARANORMAL IT VERY MUCH IS i mean we have half demon possessed magic wielding dog and a demon to start out with ALONG WITH A HAUNTED HOUSE THAT WAS SUPPOSED to be like a haunted house ride/exhibit for the theme park but is ACTUALLY HAUNTED and includes a elevator that is the access point for heaven and hell NOT INCLUDING the plot point that the theme parks Pauline (the person the theme park is based around and the movies shes stared in) impersonators keep MYSTERIOUSLY going MISSING that has been a not very thorough explanation of the first 5 episodes with honorable mentions mostly because I wanted to talk about it but I didn’t want to spoil the show PLEASE WATCH THE SHOW PLEASE!! (Again its on Netflix- help me spite them because they canceled the third season)

I love that show! I’m just sad bc Alex Brightman plays Fizzarolli in Helluva Boss, and Hazbin Hotel is racist. The shows are both by Vivienne Medrano(who is notorious for not being able to handle criticism). Alastor does voodoo. He’s white. He was alive in the 20s and the 30s. They took a part of my culture(I’m black) and gave it to a (mostly likely) racist. I really hope Alex leaves Helluva Boss.

@@olioccasionallyanimates27 Yeah it’s ruined it for me, I didn’t mind the cheap humor. Her fans keep saying “People hate her because she’s a successful queer woman.” When it’s not. I want her to be better. I want to see her grow. It’s upsetting that I can’t try to help her anymore. She keeps failing to see that the minority that she’s in comes last. She is white first. So taking someone’s culture and giving it to your character who is not apart of that culture and is not accepting of that culture is just plain wrong. I heard people saying that a lot of white queer people act like this. I think that being in a minority but only finding later in life can make people entitled. Overall I’m just sad:(

Ngl finding a therapist is really hard, especially if you're lgbt, disabled, autistic with PTSD. Adding onto African Americans being purposely being barred in white dominate areas even though it would provide more help and support. I'm cheering on from the side with a girl I worked with working towards their psychology with a good lot of these points. I feel she would be an absolutely wonderful therapist and we found common ground from moving from the same state and ending up here. I hope she charges that field with the passion she has for life now!

the one at 7:13 was so real. when I got diagnosed all the resources were for white folk and kids. my therapist, thankfully, works with a very diverse team, and was able to suggest broader resources. Books I enjoyed: -Neurotribes -What to Say Next -The Reason I Jump (loaned this out so I don't completely recall the title) -The Parent's Guide to Autism (actually contains a lot of useful info for anyone on the spectrum) Many autism resources are overwhelmingly white, and trying to find support groups and community that understands or is receptive to a black perspective (and other perspectives of color, but I single this out because of the racialized violence we receive more regularly) is an ordeal. But we are out here, and we're trying to do right by each other!

Ive seen people reffer to constant/from birth/regression nonverbal as "nonspeaking", and the other thing as selective mutism. Since there's a term for both specifics, and a term that is debated its meaning and used for both, we should either drop "nonverbal" as a term or use it as a general term and mute or nonspeaking if we're being specific

I have a pair of loop earplugs and I would honestly prefer noise cancelling headphones, but for whatever reason my parents don't want me to buy any or wear them in public because "it's rude" ig??? I don't understand how if it's a helpful tool for me to lessen overstimulation, why I can't have a pair or use them. My brother has a pair and I tried them once. My ears were in heaven, but he doesn't let me use them anymore. I'm okay with the earplugs, but they don't work well enough and they're way too expensive for what you get, IMO. They're not the greatest. Hopefully by my graduation party or my birthday, I'll have enough money to buy a good pair of headphones, or I'll receive some. I'd also love to buy more fidget toys because I just like the idea of having a collection/special interest regarding them, and I like the colors and patterns of some of them
