Imprisoning them for life doesn't necessarily imply violence. At the *very least* they should both be sterilized and banned from any form of childcare, be it through adoption or jobs. It's not even about revenge or "justice." Honestly just keeping these people away from children or anyone else who might be vulnerable should be of the highest priority

all I can think of is the fact that she was essentially naked, she had no bottoms or anything on and her shirt was pulled up above her boobs I can think of severe trauma that would leave someone "dressed" like that and probably shut down.. if they'd gotten her out of her shock she might have talked, and letting everything rot down there destroys evidence. it can also cause things like incontinence issues. even if they claimed she didn't have bottoms on to make it easier to use the towel as a bathroom then a)she was bottomless before she went immobile. or b)they took them off after she went immobile so they moved her and still didn't get her help or idk adult diapers? if you can supposedly use a towel like that you can use diapers. ofc it's bullshit they didn't clean her anyway. and c)WHY WAS HER SHIRT PULLED UP EXPOSING HER BOOBS???? even if for some fucking reason her shirt was like there when she became immobile they didn't pull down her fucking shirt?? so even as she was rotting they kept her boobs exposed while they sat there watching every day.. I feel sick..

It sounds like she was functionally autistic, so it sounds really unlikely to me that she would willingly sit on the couch for 12 years without at the very least moving to her bed sometimes. She had to have been restrained to the couch at some point or psychosocially convinced that she absolutely had to stay on the couch, because there's just no way a real adult person who wasn't forced to sit for a decade wouldn't just get up at some point

First: I'm so sorry that this story even exists. Second: After listening to different versions of what happened, I've no doubt the parents CAUSED whatever trauma that kept her on that couch. That's why they didn't bother to take her to the doctor (the once "visit" they went to, they didn't bring Lacey). They'd have had to admit guilt to anyone who saw her after that. They covered up where she was, had no visitors to their home, denied her very existence. They just wanted to hide whatever they did wrong. "Good, religious people"... Makes me SO angry.

Autistic & physically impaired female here. Parents were both very abusive in almost every way. My mother was actively medically neglecting me/denying me access to assistance from last year (I’m 26).Showed a video to my neglectful mother. Told her ur not going to do this to me. I have the privilege of speech & mobility. They def would’ve done this to me if I was less “functional” as I am. They see it as a sort of natural selection. Threatened to call APS on her & have them put me in a group home if she didn’t help me get medical care. I fell off the radar too. They always blamed me. I’m still living with them, but I always keep Lacey close to my heart as I bide my time. I will be free one day once I access all of the services that I deserve. She died on my birthday so I feel I must keep fighting for my life

Even if you ignore the fact that autism and anxiety don't cause locked in syndrome, I've worked as a carer and one of the people I helped look after had locked in syndrome we moved them regularly to avoid soars we cleaned them when ever they defecated we did everything needed to keep them as comfortable as possible. What these people did is murder through neglect.

Most likely to do with neglect if their daughter was catatonic. Even being an adult at the time herself, there's the responsibility of reporting such a dire state. But ultimately, I agree with you if her parents have some impairment themselves. I suppose that will be unearthed in the trial.

this case absolutely horrified and baffled me !! i cannot understand how this girl did not have the brains to get up and move around, go us the toilet, get something to eat and drink ! sitting like that, long before, the deterioration of her tissue, is extremely painful ! i understand this young woman had some mental health issues and some disabilities, but her disabilities were minor ! she was not severely impaired, there is no reason why she could not get up and move: even a severely mentally/DD/ cognitively disabled person will communicate discomfort, pain, boredom, etc. and then we have her sorry excuses for parents, how dumb does anyone have to be on their end, to see their daughter had issues; again, long before the deterioration and the urine and feces. ill never understand, even with all my medical and science background, how this girl was just sitting there going to the bathroom on herself, . both parties: both her, and her parents seem to be about as dumb as they come, a complete lack of common sense what so ever. my heart at the same time really breaks for Lacey as she was so broken in spirit, she was just an empty shell and no one cared.

IMO, something happened to her. And that something was her parents. I'm also autistic, and I do sometimes react with a total shutdown when shamed - if her parents shamed her for a urination/defecation accident on the couch, and told her not to move off the couch and spread it through the house, and then kept on yelling at her and shaming her? I can absolutely see that causing a shutdown. Add in the sensory discomfort of standing up when wet/soiled after being in it for a while, and I can absolutely see how this went down. The (momentary) discomfort of moving would be greater than the discomfort of staying still, throughout the whole ordeal. Add in shaming and a total disregard for her life, and the recipe for disaster is complete. Her parents are monsters of neglect. I have alexithymia, so I'm not truly sure how this is making me feel, but I'm pretty sure I'm feeling uncomfortable, horrified, and sad. All it would have taken to save her was one phone call in the 12 years since she was seen. Just one.

I think that we should start to call it sadistic torture and murder instead of neglect and disregard for her life. If they didn't like looking at her suffering in agony, they wouldn't leave her in their living room for 12 years. They had to be really entusiastic about torturing their daughter if they ignored smell and risk of her being found on such place. If they just neglected her and wanted to get rid of her they would hide her somewhere and just let her starve to death there. Only things they did is that they kept feeding her just enought to keep her alive for years to make her suffering longer. I think that we should even consider it hate crime. I heard at one of true crime channel that they were disappointed by having autistic daughter, because she wasn't able to become "perfect child" they wanted. I don't think they would did this to her if she wasn't autistic. By the way forcing someone to stay in their own waste so the worms and bugs will eat them alive litteraly used to be torture method in past...

There was a similar thing happen here not too long ago in Australia. A woman called Annie. Lived in a beautiful house in a nice area. She had cerebral palsy. She had carers who came EVERY DAY because she was physically disabled. One day a carer called 000 (emergency). Annie was covered in pressure sores and was septic. She was taken to hospital and died. She had been sitting in a chair for years. In her own waste. There was no fridge or fresh food or anything in the house. Someone had bought a second hand car in her name with her money “to use to transport her to places” and they used it for themself. Jewellery was stolen. On the outside people saw carers coming and going every day. The poor woman was just left in the chair for years unable to get up or move. Being neglected by the carers that were being PAID to take care of her. To bathe her and feed her and take her to appointments etc. One woman was charged. An older woman who was a carer. She asked to do her ‘time’ at home under home detention (ankle monitor and no leaving the house majority of the time) because she had grandchildren she needed to take care of. WTF?!!! 😡 With carers, a lot of the time they send the same person, but there would have been times when she was unavailable that they would’ve had to send someone else, so I don’t get it. 🤷🏻‍♀️ someone should’ve known something or said something.

In my state in the USA I have a care giver. The agency is supposed to do a home visit once a month to check on the worker. The insurance company comes to your house once a year. But the agency hasn't been doing the monthly checks recently.

as a carer, nothing makes me more sick to my stomach. At a previous place I worked, a client from a different branch than mine who got moved to us was the victim of just the worst abuse I could imagine at the hands of the staff at that house and it still breaks my heart, remembering the ways he'd cry out when we'd have to move him or change him. As someone who tells my supervisor whenever I see a small bruise from a client hitting themself, I don't understand how it gets to that point. I would be in a cell for what I'd do to a coworker if I caught them doing what happened to that man.

She was autistic and had social anxiety; Those are my two diagnoses as well, and after high-school it progressed to full blown agoraphobia (I only leave the house for work, but sometimes my friends can get me to go out). It makes me wonder if that's what happened to Lacey - some big traumatic event that spurred agoraphobia. With some agoraphobics, their 'safe' places get smaller and smaller and with rare cases they can become confined to a piece of furniture. This could be why she 'chose' to sit down and never get back up in her early twenties. Whatever the reason was these parents aren't. human. I don't understand how they can be. At the very least they have no souls - they deserve the worst possible punishment available.

Like maybe she sat down and they were pissed she didn't want to get up, so when she *did* finally want to get up they wouldn't let her (weird mind games that people like these parents would do.) Being agoraphobic is more than being afraid of people, it's being afraid of new situations, so if she's never been in this situation before it could be her own fear and her parents abuse forcing her to sit still. I could see people like that berating her into not even letting her move her legs out of place :\

Okay, gross and callous sounding question here, but did no one outside the home notice a lingering smell on the parents? Y’see, my daughter’s friend has to live with her mom and step-dad. The step-dad is a class A douchebag who’s one of those “I ain’t fixin’ my dog!” types (I assume he can’t cope with the idea of removing the testicles or something) so they dogs just keep producing more dogs, and he also can’t be bothered to clean up after the lil furballs so their house is… aromatic. And our friend, sadly, always has a certain “air” about her when we come pick her up for this or that. We speak not a word. It isn’t her fault. But there’s no way these people didn’t have an aroma. No way.

Yeah this might be the time for an anonymous Child Protective Services and/or ASPA call. The parents can keep custody if they improve the living situation and they will usually be given access to resources to ensure that happens

Nah, here in America people are brainwashed to fetishize youth to the point that most Americans actively repress thinking about getting old. We are also taught that everyone in America should aim to be a multi-millionaire by the time they're old enough to be disabled, thereby being able to effectively take care of themselves through paid help. Basically, if you don't plan to retire on an island, can you even say you're working hard enough? No one ever thinks they'll ever be in a position where they'll have to file for disability or even apply for social safetynet programs when they get older, even if they are currently on them.

@@cda6590 90s. People can die of heart failure, or infections (for example), or strokes. These can be quick, meaning there is no period of living with disability. There will be deterioration, but it need not get to the stage of disability.

​@@uboaappears Abuse on disabled people is disturbingly normalized, you would never guess in a million years how many people you met that you think are nice and kind could actually be horrifically abusive to disabled people specifically. It is never easy to tell unless you're extremely keen on ableist dog whistles and ableist behavior, or if you are disabled yourself or take care of a disabled person. I am autistic but a caregiver to someone physically disabled, you would not believe how many people I thought were just decent and average turned out to be just godawful when it all happened. I know I'm not the original poster, but just wanted to give you my own personal experience real quick on why these abusers seem so 'normal' and why they're very rarely suspected of anything in society.

I feel like if this was a regular person with someone who was not their parent, people would think they're really mentally unstable or something and should get help. it seems like they don't want to accept that their daughter is dead, and are kind of in denial but a little bit extreme. honestly, we don't really know much about what happened, it probably couldn't even have anything to do with her being autistic. I don't think we should judge them too hard without getting the full story. they probably should get checked by a psychologist or something though. I dont think someone would leave her body there if they were neglecting her, they'd probably try to find some way to get rid of it.

The pain and neglect this poor woman went through must have been undescribable. For all their church going and good reputation, it didn't seem they cared enough for their child to try to get actual help for their child. One visit to the doctor is not enough. They could have had a specialist visit the home, ask family, friends, etc, or heck at least clean, feed and take care of her in the couch????? HOW DO YOU TAKE CARE OF THEIR CHILD BY MAKING THEM EAT THEIR FECES!!!!!!?????? And then not have the decency of burying her and treat her like a human after death. It just makes me want to scream at them. I hope she has at least some peace after all of this, and that her "parents" have a just judgement by the legal system. Meeting the needs of an individual who might be neurodivergent or have a mental illness can be hard if someone doesn't have the resources to do so, specially if they are inflict harm on themselves in any way. But hard doesn't mean imposible, and you don't get to just give up and let them die (or even accelerate the process), let alone treat them like a skin lamp. I really really hope this is a warning call to others.

It’s very sad, but this is a very classic of mental illness having an effect on outsiders - those having mental health issues being vulnerable as potential victims. Disabled people too. Some people are so sick, they not only destroy themselves, but others too. It’s tough to watch not knowing how to help us progress past that.

I’m so glad you’re bringing attention to a story like this - disabled people’s lives really aren’t treated as valuable - but I just wanted to add something to your theory at the end. You’re right that autism can’t escalate, per se, but there IS such thing as autistic catatonia and this can get worse when you’re in your teens and 20s. Part of what characterizes it is that at the more severe end, it’s basically impossible to initiate movement, which might have looked to her parents like locked-in syndrome even though it wouldn’t have had the same neurological damage associated with it. All that to say, it’s theoretically possible that she was sitting there without being restrained, even though there’s absolutely NO excuse for leaving her there.

She was either restrained at the beginning or something horrible happened to her that was not directly connected to her autism or social anxiety, because autism and social anxiety don't work this way. She could have been either traumatized to a great extent or maybe she did indeed suffer a brain injury or infection that no one diagnosed.

I've heard that you should judge a society not by how well they are doing, but how well they are treating their most vulnerable individuals. The disabled, children, animals, and the elderly are unfortunately the ones who probably go through the most suffering. I remember when this case came out and I just couldn't fathom how someone could let this happen to their own child. I am autistic and also a support worker for autistic people and I have supported someone who for a period of months would not leave the house or move around much and was very stuck in a few rituals. If left alone this could have been his fate too. Luckily with support maybe 6 months later he is thriving again. Paitence was invaluable to this and I can't believe someone could lack that much compassion. Understanding of trauma and disability needs to grow.

@@clarice3978I‘ve personally experienced a level of catatonic that, had I had no support, might have led me to just never get up again. Luckily I had support so it never got that bad for me and I‘m okay now. My guess is it probably happened gradually. She was probably emotionally and verbally abused for years which led to depression and severe executive dysfunction. She probably sat on that couch a lot because she felt safe there and her parents berated her for it and made her feel worse. The lack of understanding and support probably worsened her mental state and she stopped showering, brushing her teeth, etc. At that point I imagine she might have still gone to the bathroom in the actual bathroom. She was probably trying to recover from being abused and her parents just kept verbally and emotionally abusing her. Even after her death they said she was of sound mind so I think they probably denied her support needs constantly and expected her to be able to do things she couldn‘t, they probably called her lazy and selfish for “making them clean up her mess“ or something of that sort. I think the reason she was exposed was probably because in the beginning they did try to clean her and they took off her pants so that they could take away the towel and clean it. Eventually the parents must have just given up on her. I don‘t know how they couldn‘t see what they were doing or if they didn’t care but I think they probably kept telling themselves that their daughter was capable of caring for herself and refused to do so for some reason and at some point they probably thought: eh, she had it coming for herself. I find it horrifying that I see so much of myself in this case and just a little bit of my dad in Lacy‘s parents. My mom would never let me waste away like that, which is probably why I‘m alive right now. I‘d like to think that my dad wouldn‘t either. He has verbally and physically abused me but I can‘t imagine he‘d just let me rot away and never call an ambulance. But still, I can imagine the circumstances that led to Lacy sitting down in the first place. I could be totally off with all of this but it‘s what I can imagine happening to me if I was in her place…

This just happened recently with a 2 or 3 yr old as well. The baby had drowned when he/she was less than a yr and had no brain activity but still sent the baby home and there was some nurse assistance but then the parents stopped answering the door and then the mom called 911 cause something was wrong with the babys pulse ox but when they arrived, same thing...baby had rotted thru. His/her anal cavity was just an open wound, the baby was green. Just AWFUL!! Said they didn't report B4 because they didn't want to lose their other children. How disgusting can a human be?!?!

With the doctor visit in 2010-ish I have a feeling they injured her, maybe enough to immobilize her, got her on the couch, she was paralyzed and they just... kind of left her there.

I had heard about this and I had wondered if she was on the spectrum or was disabled, because at the time no one had mentioned it, only that she had anxiety. I've noticed in a lot of true crime circles people are afraid to say if someone is disabled in any way or call shit what it is and this is abuse as a result of extreme ableism. I still cannot get it through my mind how this could have happened. I don't even understand how abusers can LIVE in the same house with the smell and watching her waste away. Like if she had locked in syndrome, what on earth happened for her to get it and why it wasn't reported? Did THEY harm her to where she couldn't move? What exactly did they tell themselves for this to be logical? Abnormal psyche is a special interest of mine and I just...can't find ANYTHING....for it to make sense. Knowing she was autistic now makes me SO ANGRY...and even more angry that her being autistic was not mentioned when I first heard about it.

I read an article and no where did it say she was on the spectrum. That was the last time I heard about the case until now, and I was already upset enough knowing that people did something this atrocious to another human being, but now having the info that they did this simply because she was autistic.....not enough words in the English language for my feelings on it.

Somehow the idea of them killing their daughter and being done with it is *less* disturbing and insane than watching her rot, deteriorate, and drown in her own waste in front of them for upwards of a *DECADE.* If there is a hell, her parents will be at the center of it.

It’s highly unlikely her parents would make funeral details public, as they seem determined to avoid interaction with the media, but she died in January last year, so I can only assume she’s been buried by now. As for finding the gravesite, again, highly unlikely they will publicize her grave’s location, but she was almost certainly buried in the county where they lived, probably somewhere in slaughter, and most cemeteries have a public ledger you can use to find graves. If some dedicated sleuths wanted to find her so we could all pay respects, it’s definitely possible

The saddest realization I came to when learning about this case was that for the past couple of years that Lacey was alive, she was effectively a dead girl with a pulse. If someone had discovered her and tried to remove her from the couch, she almost definitely would have died from shock. So much of her body had already been decomposed that it would be impossible to reattach or regrow it. And skin grafts require a sizable patch of healthy skin to attach the new skin to, and because they’re almost always taken from the patient themselves, there likely wouldn’t have been enough healthy skin on her body to do so. The system wide infections had already sealed her fate, and she was just slowly, steadily decomposing while still alive and aware of what was happening. The term “abusive parents” doesn’t even seem a strong enough term to describe the torture they both knowingly subjected their only child to. If I weren’t an autistic woman who was abused by my parents myself, I don’t think I’d be able to wrap my mind around how two parents could let something so evil and avoidable happen to their daughter. But the sad fact is that a lot of parents of autistic people…simply give up. They get sick of dealing with them, and just stop trying. They say, “You’re an adult now, and you shouldn’t still be my problem to deal with. I want _my_ life back.”

I remember when I heard about this story last year. I still have so many thoughts. How they weren’t locked up immediately with a 1 million$ bond is beyond me. How they can be out in life with any sort of freedom after this evil act is beyond my comprehension. How they could just sit down at the end of the night and watch their favorite sitcom with their daughter like that right there next to the chair is the ultimate in evil. FWIW, WAFB says "Sheriff Travis said the bond for the Fletchers is set at $300,000 each.", so a million dollars wouldn't be as huge as it seems.

Sounds like she went catatonic. My great grandma had severe depression and went catatonic for 30 yrs, she stop speaking, stop taking care of herself and would just sit there. My grandma had to take care of her, she had to bring her to the psychiatric hospital and everything. It sounds like that’s what happened to Lacey except she didn’t have the support she needed to get through it. Like my great grandma just snapped out of it one day after 30 yrs and was “normal” until she died. My mom even said that she was super funny. They think something traumatic happened to her in her youth to cause it 😕

The "why didn't they try harder" confuses me, because it had to have been harder to leave their daughter on the couch for 12 years. Never having guests over, the smell and keeping that scent off of them when they went out, one call to authorities and Lacey would have been out of the house and transferred to a care facility of some kind. They had to try harder, put More Effort forward! - to leave her on the couch like that. They chose to have their daughter die in the most grotesque way possible, and had to work to let it happen the way that it did. I hope they get life sentences, and never leave prison.

The only thing even close to this case I can think of was Genie, the child who spent all of her time until she was 13 in a locked room either chained to a plastic potty or in a crib with her body immobilized. She had such a severe callous on her bottom that they had to surgically remove literally inches thick of calloused skin. She never walked properly because of it, never was fully able to learn to talk, was mostly blind ... What happened to lacy is horrible similar to what happened to Genie. And Genie was abused because her father thought she was developmentally delayed too :(

as a disabled person who works with other disabled folks, videos like this are so so important. I didn’t even consider the fact that they may have been abusing her before this, and your perspective really helped me understand how truly disgusting this is. I was already horrified but when you made the point that she could’ve been restrained for 3 years…. it hit me. I say this because I am an autistic caregiver and I think it is really really important that people know these stories. You cover this in a very understanding and compassionate way and it is not too graphic or dramatized. I would really appreciate (if you ever can, i know these things are stressful) if you continued to make educational videos about the abuse disabled people face. I have worked in a nursing home and i now work as an in home care provider. I am autistic and have some other conditions as well. I really, really want people to know what disabled people can go through. It is so important. I think your voice is incredibly impactful, and if you ever do a video like this again, i will absolutely watch. I think it’s unfortunately very rare for people to see the consequences of mistreating disabled people, and videos like this not only help raise awareness but also are a warning to anyone who is dealing with disabled folks as a caregiver or nurse. again i really appreciate the thoughtfulness and kindness you approached this subject with, and i hope you make more videos like this. I... I am speechless. I have absolutely no words. I've seen, touched and smelled death myself, I've dealt with decaying corpses that had been rotting in water for a while, so I know how bad that can get, but to think that these maniacs left this poor young woman sitting on a couch in her own waste, constantly rotting away and being eaten by maggots quite probably caused one of the most obscene smells imaginable. How those people lived in there, I cannot possibly imagine. I severely despise the notion that there is something wrong with people who have autism. There's nothing wrong with us, we aren't missing anything, we aren't a curse nor do we need to be fixed. The only reason why we suffer is because we are not accommodated. You wouldn't call a trout stupid or insufficient for not being able to breathe air for a long time, or a human for not being able to survive in the depths of the ocean; we only lack accommodation and accessibility. I am horrified that someone actually went through this for 12 years... I think this is the most disturbing case I have ever heard and it reminds me of Hello Dolly by Junji Ito who, as probably many of you know, is a horror manga artist. THAT is how horrific of a crime this is. The fact that these fiends didn't even bother to take her to a hospital shows just how much harm willful ignorance brings to the world.

They did something to her. Whether it was physically restraining her, or some kind of other abuse that just completely shattered her psyche, they did something. There’s no way that it just happened randomly. They did something, and then wouldn’t take her anywhere because they didn’t want to get caught and charged with whatever it was they did, and they absolutely planned on just waiting until she died and then disposing of the body. I kind of wish the neighbor had called the police themselves when the parents refused. So it wouldn’t look like they’d actually bothered.

So I have a sister showing signs like this in her early 20's luckily my mom DID force my sister to get up and do things like go out and take her to places to get her more fresh air but there were times where she would scream and fight not wanting to move and would sit there for days or even weeks and only get up to go to the bathroom and it was only sometimes. It got to the point where she was getting a lot of redness and welts on her legs. It is very hard to not be angry with them or get frustrated when you live in a small island with doctors that never even heard of autism but my sister needed us and we were all there for her. Because even if she wasn't at the edge of death she needed help. She needed us as a family and we all love her so much. I honestly cannot comprehend these disgusting monsters (they're not parents to me) to just watch her Daughter who DESPERATELY needed them and they just failed her. I would cry sometimes trying to understand what I could do to help because I knew she was hurting and she would cry too. Is painful, it's difficult but we never gave up on her and she didn't give up either because she had us on her side. We took her to any professional willing to listen and therapists that helped her move and talk more. When you love someone you'd do anything for them, now she does everything for herself, cook, clean, put on makeup to go out, heck she wants to be a baker and get a job and I couldn't be more proud of her. Lacey didn't deserve this, Lacey needed them and they just watched her die, Lacey deserves justice.

I’m autistic, very high functioning and a mental health nurse too. I’ve seen autistic people completely shut down and I’ve seen traumatised individuals completely catatonic. This could have been the case especially being horrifically abused by her parents. Absolutely devastated for this girl. Probably one of the most heartbreaking stories I’ve heard because the people who were meant to love her did the absolute unspeakable. I actually can’t even imagine how much emotional turmoil this girl must have experienced. I’ve experienced some amount of emotional pain in my life and almost not made it and what I experienced was not a fraction of what Lacey did. Can’t believe her parents are out on bond. Doesn’t even feel right referring to them as her parents. Abusers. At the very least they watched her go through this and did nothing. I suspect they had more of an active part though.

Autistic and physically disabled from a neck injury some years ago. I was a victim of medical neglect and psychologic abuse after I had to move back in with my parents due to health problems. My parents always gaslit me for my autism and the neurologic consequences of my neck injury, and got in the way of my doctors diagnosing me correctly because they always convinced my doctors that I had somatoform disorders. They also forced me to stay in a bedroom with black mold despite the fact that I was getting dangerously ill from it. Eventually, a threat to call the police on my parents finally got them to move my bed elsewhere. It took years for me to recover because the toxins messed up my nervous system badly, and I still have permanent nerve and muscle damage as a result of it.

I live about 5 miles from this town. I've been following this case since day one. They said the mother (only the mother not Lacey) went to a Dr. a few years ago and she told the Doctor Lacey was autistic. Lacey was never acually diagnosed by a doctor.. In my own opinion Laceys parents were just monsters. Who wouldnt pick up their 80 lb child and insist she get medical attention!! Or CALL 911 !! I have made my own child go to the hospital when she didnt want to over just the flu!! I feel her parents were the cause of her health problems. Everyone who knew her before she went in hidding said she was an outgoing little girl. Also, I read just a few days ago in our local paper charges were dropped on this case due to wording. Im sure new charges will be made. Lets pray she gets justice! She lived a horrible life when she did not have to.

thank for bringing attention to Lacey being autistic, as well as her agoraphobia. people always seem to want to believe Lacey had locked in syndrome because of one rumor by an unreliable news source. locked in syndrome is debilitating and though people with this syndrome are also vulnerable to similar abuse, it’s just not Lacey’s story. people need to realize what autism and agoraphobia can look like in order to better be able to help those around them, and help see the red flags so no other autistic person goes through this ever again. trauma does wild things to the human brain and I think most people don’t understand that, which is why people choose to believe she had locked in syndrome.

People, if you're over-burdened by the care of a dependent adult, PLEASE get help through respite care or adult services. You're still dealing with a human being who has rights and you are responsible for transfering care when you need a break. Thank you for covering this story as an autistic creator. I watch/read a lot of true crime & medical stuff, but Lacey's story is easily one of the most heartbreaking, gut-wrenching stories I've ever heard of. It really drives home just how vulnerable disabled folks are to abuse & neglect, and how crucial it is to have more than just 1 or 2 people checking in on someone. It seems like Lacey's "parents" think that the "locked-in syndrome" explanation is going to "get them off the hook" somehow. 🙄 They don't seem to realize that this is called "medical neglect" & it's not any less abusive than tying her to the couch themselves. They're openly admitting that they _knew_ that their daughter could no longer care for herself & still didn't make any attempts to get her the care she needed. It's absolutely despicable. I hope the courts make an example of them to send a clear message that neglecting disabled folks is NEVER acceptable. Doesn't matter how inconvenienced you are or how old someone is, if someone is dependent on you for basic care, it's your duty help them to the best of your ability. And if the best of your ability is not enough, you ask for help from every person, authority, organization, system, and resource you possibly can until someone helps. Because they can't, they have no other option. end of story.

Something about her being found pretty much completely exposed doesn't sit right with me. I mean asides from the fact how disrespectful it is that her parents just left her like this for a long time, I feel like something might have happened here. I just can't shake off the feeling that they did something to her and that's exactly why they didn’t get help when she was rotting away. Like there are only three options I can think of here, A: she had locked in syndrome and the parents both did nothing to help her and fed her couch and feces, B: she actually was severely traumatized after something terrible happened (potentially at the hands of her parents) and again they didn't help her, or C: the parents literally prevented her from getting up and leaving (also potentially after something terrible happened to her at the hands by her parents). All of these are absolutely horrendous and heartbreaking just to think about. Like these parents are genuinely evil in my eyes.

this touched me deeply because when my depression and burnout started I just wanted to lay down on my bed. but my parents talked to me, my mom bought me food, my mom reminded me to brush my teeth and waited for me until I did so before going to sleep again, she helped me wash, brush and tie my hair up. I didn't talk to her, I didn't respond to most things, I just wanted to die, but she didn't let me. of course at one point they got tired and we had an huge argument. she still doesn't know it was a trauma response, but she took care of me anyways. after that argument I sort of woke up, started getting up early and made myself a sandwich every morning. that was my biggest accomplishment in two years. I can't imagine living a life now if my mom hadn't helped me. I know that Lacey wanted and needed help. I wonder where she would be at now had someone seen her sooner, had someone helped her. it breaks my heart to think not everyone has had the opportunity to recover, to know what living a life is again...

I don't have autism, but as someone who had extreme depression, I can speculate (well, like we all are since we weren't there). When my mom died, I stopped taking my epilepsy meds, I stopped eating, I barely drank anything, and just slept upwards of 20+ hours a day. Thank gods for my boyfriend, he'd wake me up every few hours to make me drink a cup of water, eat a snack (even if it was just half sandwich), use the toilet and at least once a day, he'd help me shower. After about 3 weeks, he told me that I needed grief counseling, see a psychiatrist, or he was going to have me evaluated for in-patient treatment at a psychiatric hospital. That was the kick in the ass I needed, and we spent awhile looking for a psychiatrist and also a therapy program. I don't have family near me, they're states away... If it weren't for him, and he just let me continue to only sleep and nothing else, I have no doubt that I could've ended up like Lacey. It's clear as fucking daylight that her parents didn't give a shit about their daughter's well-being, physically or mentally. Aside from that initial doctor's appointment, they didn't try to help her with anything. They didn't make her get up to shower, didn't make her eat, didn't clean wounds. Nothing, and it's disgusting. They, more than likely, caused some kind of trauma that made her sink into that never-getting-up-again, especially with her only clothing being a t-shirt and it was above her breasts (that makes me think there was some sort of assault, which can cause catatonia in some people; saw it a lot when I was in psychiatric nursing).

She wasn’t like….non verbal and super in need of 24/7 care….not that this would make her less valuable but..god damn. I thought my parents were bad. They just lack any capacity for understanding that people can be different and they is okay. But….oh my god this poor girl. They did this to her. They deserve to be in prison for murder. As in, given her height, she was underweight to the point where it was medically concerning, but there are people in worse condition that just go through life right now. I have an uncle that is severely low functioning autistic (not sure the proper term) he is 40 and I am so thankful my grandfather loves him so much, he is severely overweight though (about 500+lbs) but my grandfather is old and does his best, every few months/year he always replaces my uncle's mattress (indentation) and gets new wood board to put under the cushion of my uncle's favorite chair, my grandpa makes sure my uncle lives comfortably even if it means kicking us out of the bathroom early for him 😅😅 if my grandpa was not around I cannot imagine how my uncle's life would be 😢😭 this will never happen to him ❤

I first heard about this case about a year ago and it still irks me how little reporting was done on this case. Yeah im autistic too so this sort of thing kinda hit a sore spot, but it also bugged me how little people knew about this or what happened. I do hope that once a trial gets underway there will be more news... I don't wish others to know the horribly graphic parts but I also want to stop feeling like the only people who really know about this case are just other autistic people/people who know and care for autistic people. I hope whatever jury the parents get doesn't have an ounce of sympathy for them and gives them both life in prison. Also I hope this case changes something. This case genuinely makes me so anxious. The idea of not understanding why you aren't being helped, or why you are stuck in that situation is so scary. Being left there to dissociate and starve and decay alone with no control or idea of what to do in those moments sounds like an absolute nightmare. I can't even begin to imagine the anxieties Lacey must have been facing silently towards the end of her life. Nobody was there to hold her hand, or comfort her, or engage with her. They didn't even take care of her basic needs! She must have been terrified. Even trying realistically imagine what just a day of living that experience in her shoes would feel like makes me feel sick to my stomach...

It is also deplorable that the parents lived with a deceased body covered in maggots and excrement for years. Abusers usually live in chronic chaos, but they rarely inconvenience themselves or put themselves out because they are so narcissistic... so how these parents could abuse their daughter and then just live 2 feet away from her body for years is a whole new level of psychopathy. I once had a panic attack so bad I was basically immobile and frozen for a day and a half (I'm Autistic, yes), and even though I'm an adult, my own mother moved me herself into a bed, brought me food, and ensured I was hydrated until I could move again (she also sat with me and held me almost the entire time, but this was due to a very traumatic event I'd witnessed). They’re evil, to a degree that even most evil persons aren’t. But I think they must also be insane, because they didn’t do anything at all until they were forced to call the authorities. If they were abusive parents but cognizant of the fact that their daughter died, if they were actually aware, they would have tried to do more to cover it up. They would have buried her in the backyard and taken the couch outside and burned it and disposed of what the fire couldn’t destroy. I think they must have been in complete mental denial of the facts. Even the fact that their daughter had died. To me, it sounds a lot like Norman Bates from “Psycho.”

Parents of children with ME/CFS are regularly told to ignore their childs needs, because doctors think it's not real and they don't want to "encourage malingering". There's a well known case of a girl who was paralyzed who was thrown into a swimming pool by her nurses to "prove she could move". They nearly let her drown. I believe these parents at first tried to get their daughter help, the response from their doctor completely fits what parents of children with hard to identify illnesses get told: Don't help them, you'll give them an "incentive" to pretend they're ill. Now that doesn't mean the parents shouldn't be charged with murder. Because whatever a doctor tells you, at some point, as a parent, you know it isn't right! It does mean however, that the doctor who told them to leave their unresponsive daughter on the couch in her own feces, needs to be charged as well.

I had locked in syndrome. I’m autistic and my mom was just horrible. It was , it’s so hard to explain. But I woke up and my daughter that was a day old was now six months old, I was in my childhood bedroom and my sick ass mom left me. For six months I sat in my own waste. 🥺. I’m 42 now and I have seen her once since then. The amount of therapy I still need is just a lot. I don’t know what happened and the moment my mind said “No this is too much” but I have no memory of sight or sound or life. I don’t know how my daughter looked as she grew those six months. It’s not a choice. Sometimes the trauma is too great and your body takes over. I’m in EMDR and trying to heal still. I think I was deluding myself into believing it’s more common than this but as I read the comments, it’s not common.

My parents brought me to the hospital the first time I wrote a suicide note. If my parents found me unable to do literally anything, they would 100% call an ambulance and then find a way to take care of me properly and make sure I can still live life.
