In this week's video, I talk about Autistic Special Interests! I go over what they are, the pros and cons of them, how Autistic girls' special interests often mirror their NT counterparts, and then my personal special interests throughout my life (featuring pictures you won't want to miss! LOL).
I'd love to know what your special interests are, so leave them down below! :)

I can literally lose sleep over my excitement to learn about something I’m interested in! Tropical fish, aquarium plants, ponds, house plants, gardening, cloth diapers? Chickens?! ... sometimes I can’t shut my brain off at night and I have insomnia so I just get up and research my interest. I’m always disappointed when there is nothing new to learn about a topic. Have always loved reading.

Oh my goodness, chickens! I have loved birds since I was 7. I have a chicken recuperating from minor infection in my bathroom right now (don’t worry she’s chillin’ in a kitted out box & doesn’t want to walk on her injured foot anyway). I have off and on read every surgical veterinary medicine journal on specific veterinary conditions, right now I’ve read every one on her specific condition. Last week I spent 6 hours in the middle of the night figuring out how to explain my brain to some of the computer programming engineers at my work. Basically my brain runs in DOSS.

At 65 I have not yet been diagnosed officially; My special interests since childhood have stayed in my life to this day. They include reading, music, pure physics, engineering, painting, space travel, pure mathematics, a wide range of crafts especially making unique wedding dresses and ball gowns, wildlife and the ecology of the planet. I get so focused that I didn't even react during a hurricane when a tree smashed a 13ft wide window in LOL

This has been really confusing for me as someone with autism, since I may also have inattentive adhd as well. It’s really hard to make these distinctions. Is it that autistic people can have life long and short lived alternating special interests, or is that only or more commonly in combination with adhd? I have consistent interests I have however I switch between them sometimes after a month, a week, or even constantly throughout the day. I’ll wake up contemplating my philosophical views researching and end reading about autism or miraculous ladybug. It’s great to see people have similar experiences as me but as I said it’s confusing trying to form an understanding of the autistic experience especially for myself and other girls when many Autistic people also have additional disorders.

I'm not 100% sure I'm on the spectrum but highly suspect I am. I'm a 30 year old female and into photography, learning about politics, sociology, feminism, debating, the esoteric, movies, shows, and watching KZbin! I get depressed and burnt out easily so I prefer interests that don't take out a lot of energy like watching shows.

I also wish I could stick to one special interest. I buy all the things for each one...really adds up haha. I have loved reading (hyperlexic) forever, I also have loved true crime since I was a pre teen. Through high school it was serial killers, mobsters then porn stars haha.. Looking back I think I was just trying to understand how they think. I loved football, but only obsessively for a few years. And finally crafting! I have latch hooked, knitted, crocheted, diamond painted, and for the last year and a half it's been cross stitch while listening to audiobooks. I crave it! LOVE your videos, keep up the awesome work :)

This made me sit down and write out a list of my own special interests. What's good to hear is that you also just suddenly go off things, as this seemed odd to me that I did this. Many of my SIs have been related to my life and what is going on, so for example I was obsessed with parenting babies (eg breastfeeding, attachment parenting) when I had babies! As soon as my children weren't babies any more, I lost interest. I believe this is common in women on the spectrum, and may be another reason why we are under diagnosed? To be honest I have also several times tried to 'professionalise' a special interest, and it almost always doesn't work out. I try not to do that now but it's hard to resist.

And I can tell that they have all brought you happiness :) I have some special interests have that changed over time and one in particular that always finds its way back into my mind and life. I’ve cycled through Barbie dolls, Polly Pockets, different movies and characters, amusement parks and water parks, American Girl dolls, magazines, and books, goats, cows, and farming, and gymnastics. My strongest special interest involves disabilities, medical conditions, mental health, etc. It actually led me to figure out I’m Autistic because I starting learning a lot about autism. I had a run in my “rabbit hole” of depression that lasted 2 1/2 - 3 years a few years ago and survived on every episode of Dr Who (reboot) I watched them over and over and over. The Steven Moffat ones were the most interesting to me as they were more complex and had a thread connecting seasons together. When Chris Chibnall took over his writing ruined it for me. I transferred over to the MCU, not leaving the house I watched them all on prime. I’ve had a thing with Baking and The great British bake off for a good many years now, though I don’t tend to bake it as much in the summer as I do in the winter. Beading, polymer clay, water color, colored pencils have all been players. Thank you Olivia for all your videos, I’ve been helped immensely by them.

Creating paintings and videos are also special interests of mine, and it's great because I can share them with others and even make money off them. My special interests have always been animals and video games from a very young age (around 2 or 3 years old). I have also had a bunch of other things that have flitted in and out over the years. I would examine, dissect, research, put in %10,000. Next day, I was bored of it. Depression is making enjoying my 2 main interests harder and harder sadly. Lost all motivation to even try anything new as well. Not sure how to get past it. I am on anti depressants I don't feel work, and have a therapist. What else can I really do. Get more pets I guess? I cannot even find a video game I can sit through for more than an hour now for some reason. Which just makes me even more depressed.

I was diagnosed with autism at age 5 and my lifelong special interest is music. However, I had many sub-interests that changed over time when my main interest stayed the same. My longest running sub-interest is the diatonic harmonica. I grew up listening to country music and the song that got me hooked to the instrument was "Ain't Goin' Down ('til the Sun Comes Up)" by Garth Brooks. I was fascinated by Terry McMillan's harmonica playing on that track because he sounded different from other harp players that I've heard at that point in my life. The way I could describe his playing style was that it's very bluesy, but still had that "country" sound. I'd listen to his playing on the radio and even though I couldn't pinpoint his name as a kid, he had a very unique sound that I wanted and still want to imitate. However, a lot of much older harmonica players have bullied me because of it. I was constantly told to give up the instrument, that I was obsessive and rude, and that I should stop thinking about my special interest. But my motivation kept me going from throwing in the towel. Last year, I started hanging out on Zoom with a professional musician from North Carolina named Todd Parrott and he's a very understanding and non-judgemental guy. I told him the day before my first lesson with him about my autism and he told me he was comfortable with that. Ever since that first lesson, we developed a cool friendship especially since he also was influenced by Terry McMillan as well. A few people online still try to bully me, but I'm a lot better both sound-wise and mentally because of Todd.

I don't have an autism diagnosis and can't say I experience any of the other symptoms. But the "special interests" part? Totally 100% accurate description of how I deal with my interests. I kept smiling all through the vid, because what you described was so darn familiar. In no specific order: Ancient Rome. Oceanography. The Carboniferous period. 1950s industrial design. Ocean Liners. Pleistocene Australia. Airline management strategies. The Mayan civilization, Mauritius-Reunion ecosystems...

When I was young I was extremely passionate about a lot of things, to the point where I could barely focus on anything else. I was into Tolkien's Middle-Earth abd obsessively made lists and family trees, trying to soak up every last piece of information. It was so fun but NOBODY wanted to talk to me about it, even though it was all I could think about. My family has become used to my obsessions by now tho, and I apreciate that they let me infodump on them about my interests

My special interests are fanfiction (reading, collecting, and categorizing), audiobooks (especially video game world themed fiction), Jane Austen, Harry Potter, antiques/art/interior design, phone games that focus on merging and organizing, and film/ book analyses. One of my more recent special interests was cooking...especially when I went vegan then completely healthy whole foods plant-based no oil or sugar. All of a sudden, I LOVED cooking and learning new recipes. I went through Cornell University’s plant-based nutrition program. I was super-charged to protect animals and turn people’s health around!!! I helped my uncle reverse his Type 2 diabetes. This consumed me all day. There’s even a drawing of me in the kitchen with roots growing out of my feet. But then I became so burnt out! I’m still vegan, but not WFPB...as much as I still believe in it and want to be. I’m the only one in my family who cooks and am sick of it now. So we eat out almost daily. Your football story brought me back to my baseball love when I was younger :) But, yeah, this video resonated so much. When I get into something I don’t want to be bothered with the ins and outs of daily life

I’ve always loved the idea of travel and adventure. I got the chance to visit one of my aunts in Seattle, WA (I lived in FL) after I graduated eighth grade. Before I went, I devoured every book I could find in the library (this was before the internet 🤪) about Seattle, Washington, it’s history, prehistory, natural history, flora, fauna, etc… I was like Cliff from Cheers (“Little known fact…”)🤣 Then I was interested in archaeology as a career (around the age of 13 or 14). I loved Indiana Jones and wrote a paper in school about archaeology and had the magazine (Archaeology), and got lots of books on the subject. I ultimately got to do archaeology at university with a couple of professors and other students in Belize. After that trip though, I suffered severe burnout and that was the end of that. BUT I did get my bachelors in anthropology (barely😵‍💫…long story) and used that degree to become the Director of Education at the local museum! Due to lack of funds (i.e. getting paid minimum wage) and little interest on the part of the community I ended up leaving that job that I loved. But throughout my life I have always been interested in nature, travel, adventure, hiking, camping, and the like. Everything I’ve done has been in that realm. 🌼

I have significant autistic traits, but now I'm second-guessing myself if I'm actually wired differently or if I'm just a socially-inept weirdo. I've gone through phases of special interests all my life- I think less pronounced than actually autistic people, but more obsessed than the people around me. Maths, Kingdom Hearts, Hapkido, Catholicism (to the point of wanting to become a nun!), veganism, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, tax law, Myers-Briggs, autism. I was never interested in horses, but when I was in primary school I pretended to be because all the girls my age were (I fooled everyone except myself).

This one really clicked for me. I just picked up doing art after many decades, and yes, I am now doing it obsessively and am becoming much better than I expected. Also, have done woodworking and got very good at it. Along the way, I've found that I can always calm down using these things, even when I hit major life problems. So glad people are finding these things out at much younger ages.

I listen to a true crime podcast (We Saw the Devil) about a month ago she did an entire episode on women and why so many are interested in true crime. I often wonder if there are not way more women that that were not diagnosed. I was born in 1978 and back then my mom struggled to even get an ADHD diagnosis for me because just like with autism at that time they were insisting that ADHD and Autism we're really things that mostly boys had, or that you had to be non verbal, and have really extreme behavior.

They go for a period, and either fade from burnout or physical fatigue - or will reach a breaking point or bad experience that sours them. Now I'm at a later point in life where I'm resistant to get into any special interest that involves acquiring physical things, due to storage issues and the hassle of dealing with it when I do lose interest. I’d watch the interviews of the cast and find their social medias and also read fan fiction of them. I literally still have a binder full of all the “art” I made lol

I have long term special interests that I cycle through: Dinosaurs (my oldest SI, I've had it for as long as I can remember), True crime (serial killers especially), Greek mythology and Star Wars. And then I had other more short term interests that went away and never really came back: horses when I was a child, the Avatar movie with the blue people, Imagine Dragons and most recently this year, plane crashes. Usually when I have a new special interest I know because it's the ONLY thing I can think about all day and the only topic I research and want to talk about which can be bad sometimes because I neglect my other responsibilities and even forget basic stuff such as showering, eating, exercising and socializing (I basically become a hermit that wants nothing to do with the outside world).

Obviously, if you ask other people they usually don't lose sleep or almost get fired from their jobs or get super irritable if they can't do the hobby... it's just a totally different level. On the other side: I have made some of my special interests into my career, meet amazing people, explored the most fascinating subjects, moved to a foreign country and so much more because of special interests. 🤷🏽‍♀

I have both long term and short term special interests. But I have noticed that my absolute fervor for the long term ones does have an ebb and flow. My big long term ones are barbies (and similar), cars, cats, and art/crafting. Shorter term ones I've had too many to count but a number of them could be considered aspects of my major special interests like a brief time where I was super into police and military vehicles that technically falls into my car special interest as does a time period where I was really into RC cars. But then there are other interests that seem to stand alone like my interest in meterology.

Really interesting to hear the evolution of your special interests. 😊 I can't believe you didn't get into baseball earlier, what with your family ties to the sport! My lifelong special interest is theme parks but I've had other little obsessions along the way... like yodelling, woodlice, snails, caves, etc. 👍

I obsess about true crime documentaries and researching true crime in general, walking workouts lol, cats, anything to do with The Rapture, and psychology( specifically ASD, narcissism, borderline personality, and psychopathy). You really just listed all of my special interests in chronological order when you said “xy are special interests more likely seen in girls” 😂😂 that funny. Anyways, I also remember being SUPER into lion king, I did not watch anything else, I watched the musical three times, wrote letters to the actors, knew all of the songs by heart (even the African ones wtf), and only listening to these songs. I still love it to death but not as extreme anymore. Same with horses, but it’s just given to the fact that I’m my current life status I am unable to ride or take part time care of any horse because I live in a city. Still I sometimes watch hour long nerd videos about them and almost cry in joy when I see horses. It was literally all I could think about. I would only draw them, I would write about them (even my thesis for school), I knew everything…after that cheerleading came, but got replaced with dance until today. I would refer to horses as my life long special interest, and I feel like dance will always be somehow too. Oh, and obviously like many of us also psychology. I’m still waiting for the day I’ll stop consuming these videos like air, but I still dig it..let’s see :D I remember even when I was smaller I was really into these topics somehow. Oh and not to forget rollercoasters…that was something…and as you mentioned: make up! I’m quite pleased with this one because it lead to me being super good at it today because I watch every tutorial there is and I have phases where I practice it every day, so yeah, that’s cool :) I really love my special interests, what I don’t love tho is, when there is no one to share them with :/ Ok I clearly can’t tell a short story either..bye 🧡 Oh and now that I continued watching…BAKING 🤩🤩

My two special interests are anything with true crime (hence why I'm studying criminal psychology,) and also artwork, specifically adult coloring books. Art is more the therapeutic and relaxing special interest, while true crime is more related to my future career. Now that I think about it, another one is also dungeon crawling games (first-person and third-person.) That one is more when I want to do a mindless activity and not think so much, like if I've had a shutdown or a bad day and know that I won't enjoy my artwork as much!

I recently learned how to crochet, started painting, went down a very deep spiral of learning all things RVs (I want to do this sometime!) I've changed careers to be around an interest before, such as veterinary medicine to real estate to IT to accounting. I tried to get into football. I asked my ex step dad to teach me and take me, and he refused. (womp womp and RIP that interest) Also, my granfather played for the Red Sox too!!

I’m also on the spectrum. I feel like we have experienced a lot of the same. I can jump in quickly but get burnt out just as easily. The two things that have stuck with me are crocheting and Harry Potter. Stay with me here. Crocheting is repetitive knots. I freaking love it. Harry Potter is this whole basically parallel world next to ours with a whole world unraveling. I can quote it chapter and verse. Everything else I have obsessively loved has come and gone, maybe come again and gone again.

Steady special interests are nature&garden (relations between animals, humans and plants) and astrology of different countries&cultures, psychology and health philosophy in context to history. In between these ones, it often keeps changing, though i want to learn everything when i discover a new kind from these subjects 🤔🙈. Persistent is my interest and sympathy for animals, plants and friendly humans&cultures. Everything especially interesting to me with persistence since childhood is books. As a child i wanted to read everything, as teenager i wanted to become an author and wrote all the time, then during intensive personal crisis times, i discover self-expression through painting. In the last 3 years i came across the world of junk journals. Which is now my top persisting special interest apart from nature and friends. I tend to hoard paper for all my life. Throughout binding books, i'm hoping to give this a little sense and express a story. 🙂

And I have watched all kinds of murder mysteries real ones and other ones like SVU Law and Order all kinds of one's all the way back to when I was a little kid when I used to First Watch Columbo and all the other ones. I I also like watching documentaries doesn't matter what it is mostly history. I also like what I also like reading nonfiction. And I also like doing yarn with plastics you know the ones with holes in it. I even tried looming but I got frustrated and stopped. I have had so many interests that I have given up counting all of them. I try them for awhile then lose interest in them. I love Disney movies and mostly musicals like Meet Me in St Louis and Sound Of the music and Newies and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. I have so many musicals I love. I also like Don Knotts he is one of my favorite actors I like all the things he has been in. I really like The Apple Dumpling Gang. I also love Country music and Bluegrass music and gospel music and sock hop and Motown music and easy listening like Frank Sinatra Sammy Davis jr. Dean Martin Nat King Cole Mel Torme. Dogs. I would literally go to the library multiple times a week and bring home STACKS of books from the non-fiction section regarding dogs. Breed specific books. Breed encyclopedia books. Dog care books. Dog training books. ALL.THE.BOOKS. And now at 35 yrs old, I am the kennel manager at a veterinary hospital :) I should have been a vet... but cptsd and undiagnosed adhd/autism took me down several other paths and hyperfocuses. But one day I will own some land and start my own dog boarding business right next to my house :)

hi!!! nervous making this comment as I’m not sure nor diagnosed and have a LOT of imposter syndrome, but I relate to a lot of autism content haha, including special interests!!! I suspect my spin is my original characters. they are my favourite thing and take up a very large expanse of my brain!!! was actually drawing one of my characters while watching this video, her name is Whitney and you reminded me of her, she too loves football (plays it professionally) and looks similar to you in a way???? her boyfriend’s name is Robert and he’s one of the characters I think about most, he is from the story Run-Away Sunshine which revolves around Robert trying to find himself again after being held to ridiculously high standards as a child for being demon royalty, and through a convoluted series of events ends up unsure of who he really is with a need to hide his identity as a former, supposedly banished king and a fear of the blood that keeps him alive, being part vampire and all lol. he then meets Whitney through an apartment-wide party invitation, she was particularly nice to him despite the fact that he was too afraid to speak to her or open the door. he decided to go to the party solely to meet the lovely person who gave him the invite!!! they become friends and later lovers, it’s so sweet. he also reunites with his brother, Shadow, who was also banished. Shadow helps Robert find himself again, teaching him that it’s okay to be himself even if that “himself” is very different to other people, it makes me so happy and inspires me to be more myself too, in fact thinking about Robert and Shadow is one of the reasons I’m here today, as I probably wouldn’t have suspected autism if I didn’t start ig “unmasking” (though I have imposter syndrome about that too and I can’t be completely sure that’s what I’m doing HAHA). nonetheless despite still being different to him in some aspects (like the whole demon royalty thing LMAOOOO) I feel like Robert is the most relatable character ever made, maybe alongside another one of my original characters, Charmie. Robert shares so SO many traits with me, and he is just my favourite character ever. may have shared a bit too much there haha, but nonetheless!! I often wonder if I have had other spins over the years too, I often suspect I had a special interest in Beanie Boos, Shopkins and Num Noms when I was about 11!! I’d collect all three (I have over 600 Shopkins), was very active on the Shopkins and Num Noms wikis, would constantly watch Beanie Boo KZbin videos as well as having my own Beanie Boo channel, would sort them all very often, they were a huge part of my personality and I wanted to be a collectible toy designer!!! I can’t really research my OCs and there isn’t much community to share with unfortunately as I made them, so them being my only interest really is quite isolating. I do think about them constantly, talk for hours and hours about them whenever I get the chance, engage with them a lot (mostly drawing and sorting), I would have a more active channel for them if it wasn’t for fear of people in my house hearing me make videos!!! I often find it hard to do things that aren’t related to them in some way and a job that doesn’t involve them feels like torment. they are basically my personality today LOL and I love them so dearly. also sometimes suspect a second spin of autism itself HAHA I think about if I have it or not constantly and I know a large amount of information about it!!! I don’t think it’s at that spin intensity just yet but I would think if there is anything I’m interested in other than my OCs, it’s autism!! this is why I’m here in the first place haha!!! I love these videos :D

music used to be a very big one, not so much anymore. Video games have ALWAYS been a big one, although I don't like playing that much because it distracts me from properly analysing the content. Japanese anime were a big one when I was a teen. Psychological horror, witchcraft and occultism, drawings, street and alternative fashion.... and I recently got into perfumes and scavenging.

Distributed systems (my job); gardening, cooking & baking... even used to be a Patissier once. Especially when dealing with vast complexity, it gets obvious that information is being linked differently; NT people may sometimes complain that they find some of the links illogical, but it's probably not their job to judge what they don't even comprehend - or are able to follow... even when watering it down to the least, they often don't even know the terms which I use. I even try to make it understandable by simplification; but I never can talk straight and be understood.

My special interests so far seem to have been dinosaurs, drawing, cycling, weightlifting and gaming. Ok, my elementary school teachers noticed an above average level of general knowlege, but no teacher ever asked me about dinosaurs. Don't know if I'm ND (quite certain that I have ADHD tho), but gaming ceeertainly classifies as special interest on an autistic level ^^ It's not healthy at times. Weeks, months, years. 16+ hours a day as a student. Like, getting into an MMORPG, joining a top endgame kinship after 3 months of full-on grind to level cap (multiple chars) and watching guides before crashing. Then lecturing the raid leader, getting away with it (cause I'm right), becoming co-leader 4 months in and dropping out after a year, cause I couldn't neglect RL anymore. Always thought it was an escape mechanism cause I suffer from depression, life wasn't always easy etc. Oh well, I will probably find out more about myself this year. An unexpected journey, indeed. ps: Your story is inspiring! Best of luck, traveler. edit: There was one person that became my special interest. That went south fast.

The bigger picture is covered! *(Sighs)* When suffering with Autism, I just can't be free from the oppression that society puts on Me! And all this bulls&@% about Jesus telling You He can save You and all that crap, I am sick of it! No disrespect to those who are believers, but they just don't understand that Faith/Religion just doesn't work for some people, and yet they go about shouting like nutcases out on the streets just preaching lies from a mythical book! I've had a million in my 57 years of life. My mom has always asked me why I never stick with anything, and, of course, I thought that meant it was a character flaw. I didn't want to be "that" person so I tried my best to stick with things more but I just couldn't do it. I'm still not great at it. I've had so many different jobs and career paths that it's hard for me to find work now because my resume has me jumping all over the place. If I could change one thing about myself it would be that - I would choose to be more stable in my interests. I find I dump friends too, when I get bored with them. It's not that I don't like them anymore, but it's like I get burnt out or something. I don't like this trait in myself. Right now I'm on a crochet kick and doing hair. I've watched every KZbin video there is on how to bleach, highlight, cut, style, and anything else you can do to hair. I feel like I could go to hair school right now and be the top student in the class. But I know a career as a hair stylist requires continuing education, which requires not losing interest in what I'm doing, so it probably wouldn't be the best career path for me. I wish I could just be happy with one or two things. Why do our brains do this, I wonder?
