In India we must make it a norm to learn each others languages, North people should learn Kannada, Tamil, Malayalam, South people must learn Hindi, Marathi, Punjabi etc It will lead to greater peace and cohesiveness in the country.

@@EpicBunty You can argue it is a mix of Indo-Aryan languages spoken in the North. South Indian languages form an entirely different language family and have nothing to do with hindi. This sort of north centric world view is the what kicks off every language based argument.

@@MsPaint08 South indian languages aka dravidian languages are influenced by the Indo-aryan languages and vice versa. the current Hindi that we have is not real hindi anyways, it is a mix of all the (mainly indo-aryan) languages. when the persian people came and brought their languages, it got intergrated. when the britishers came and got their language, that also got integrated. This is why the hindi that we speak today can be understood in most parts of the country. It is not a "north centric" view. stop creating unnecessary divide over nothing. you can like it or not, but hindi is the closest we have to the most common and mixed language in this country. No one is even forcing you to speak/learn hindi, yet you people are forcing others to learn your regional language that can only be spoken in 1 state? for communicating with the auto-wala's ? really ?

If you don't live in Karnataka, you knowing Kannada almost certainly is not much use in your day to day life, fair enough, however, it absolutely is helpful to know the language while in Karnataka. They really do not need to. Second, the dravidian languages are very much connected to the indo-aryan languages. for you to even think that they evolved in complete isolation over so many years in the same subcontinent is ridiculous. many indo-aryan languages are influenced in vocabulary and grammatical structure by the dravidian languages, and many dravidian languages borrow words from Sanskrit. Hindi is just the modern day mixed speak of the subcontinent, and it heavily borrows from ALL of the languages. I am not forcing anyone to learn hindi. it is a response towards those hellbent on forcing others to learn Kannada. You are not aware of either heads nor tails of the argument and just inserted yourself, clearly to insult and to misinform. This is a constructive way of looking at the problem. In Hindi, there's a saying, "Jaisa Desh, waisa vesh", which is analogous to "When in Rome, do as Romans do". This is a great effort and I hope other locals also take this approach.

I don't know why people rage over languages!. Languages fascinate me quite a lot. As someone who grew up in UP, I already knew Hindi and brajbasha, learnt English in school. Learnt Japanese after watching anime and currently learning mandarin. If I had to travel to Karnataka, I would have no problem in learning a few phrases.

Hi there! I’m a non kannadiga myself, and what you’ve typed here felt rude even to me. Trust me when I say this, most of the southern states are much better at putting in efforts to converse with ppl in Hindi & English, rather than you finding someone from the north who puts in the same effort to probably pick up a few southern words, I’m not saying this, statistics itself says so. There are some really sweet souls who do atleast consider picking up a few words, but there are also a few like yourself, who somehow call an entire state asking ppl to try speaking in their state language as Ego too big? Well, with all due respect, if there’s anyone’s ego that’s too big here, it’s of ppl w such thought who refrain from even trying to learn a few words & think Hindi & English are solely enough for an entire nation. I’m not sure if you’ve ever been told, but our constitution itself is inclusive of 22 such languages, cause guess what? Some great brains, unlike a few here, noticed that every language needs to have it’s representation and be respected. Is it asking you to learn all 22 languages? No. Just try to learn a few words, atleast out of respect for that state, if you’re planning on moving there, or going for holidays, that’s the basic request all southern states ask for. Ppl requesting should also be inspired from such youths, learning to advocate for a genuine solution, instead of random suggestions of the net. Harmony & peace are seen only when there are efforts from both the ends, it’s only in a matter of understanding and a step to change for the better that’s it :)
