If you're replacing your spark plugs, never use a power tool to remove or install them. When installing them, you should be able to hand tighten them (any difficulty means you're most likely crossing the threads and need to try again) and then finish tightening it down with the ratchet.

Repair shop in Germany tried to rip my sister 3000$ for 30 min job. Invoice claimed 28 hours of labour at 80 dollars per hour and 1200 for a new starter(160 dollars at the local toyota dealership). They even had the audacity to ask 150 for diagnozing the problem although they knew from the begining it is a failing starter motor. They had never even opened the bonnet. I have never been so rude in my life as I was with these guys. Btw it's illegal to do roadside repairs in Germany, which I did anyway :)

Great work Sam! The Mercury Marauder and the Impala SS were known to go the distance with a bit of added power. I’m sure you would be able to make some adjustments without sacrificing reliability. I’m sure that after doing these repairs, this v8 will last for many more miles. It’s definitely a safe vehicle to drive, although within the past year and the rise in fuel, it may be a bit more costly to fill up. Keep up the great work!

I took my truck to Firestone for a wheel alignment and they asked if I wanted them to look at anything else. I told them I had a leaking exhaust donut and they said they'd look at it. I went to work and the girl called and said I needed both exhaust manifolds and both catalytic converters replaced for about $2250. I declined the work. I eventually got around to replacing the $15 exhaust donut and three years later it's still quiet and running perfect. I'd have been happy to let them replace the donut for an hours labor and they'd have been finished in 20 minutes max because I got a nice rust piece in my eye that bugged me for a few days. I don't know what happens to those rust pieces.

I just replaced the EVAP canisters under my 2011 Crown Vic also. One thing I've learned is that if you're not familiar with these systems that some of these repair shops will take you for whatever they can because they know. I absolutely love the Crown Vic and I welcome any more content with it

Needed a new strut bearing mount on my Volvo, common failure item. Shops wanted to replace entire strut, told me you couldn’t do just the bearing mount. Needless to say the quotes of $500 plus, i did it for $70 and one hour.

@@lzh3131 IPD has a heavy duty version that lasts a lot longer than the standard one. Look for Heavy Duty Front Upper Spring Seat from them. It'll save you having to swap them out often. I have an 05 XC90 2.5T, it's actually been pretty easy to maintain but the PCV service was a pain to do since the previous owner let it go to the point the drain was full of carbon so I had to drop the oil pan to clean it. That sucked.

I hate ever having to rely on a shop. If it's something that's beyond my skill level, I'll hire a mechanic direct. This is sometimes inconvenient (scheduling), but it's less expensive and you don't have a company trying to overcharge you for inexpensive parts and overblown labor hours.

Okay, from a mechanic and shop owner. Tune ups are a very common DIY. Downside is that with many newer vehicles equipped with aluminum heads have at least 1 awkward plug. Taking a car to a shop is sometimes a case of "Pay to get it done with insurance". For the specific example of a tune up, if you are doing it DIY and cross thread an awkward plug, you're liable to be essentially doing a top end rebuild when you have to replace a head. Cost of tune up (Here locally) is about $180.00 Cost of replacing a head: Head = $250.00 - $400.00 Gasket set = $118.00 - $210.00 Fluids + Filters = $85.00 5 hours labor to have the head swapped = $400.00 ($80/hr) Yes, there are many projects I will look at the customer and say "You're somewhat mechanically inclined, are you sure you want to pay me to do this?" Belts, filters, fuses, lightbulbs... that sorta stuff I often don't charge for other than parts. Examples of vehicles with known issues swapping sparkplugs: Ford V-10s Chevy Impalas (3.4L) Ford 3.8L V6 Dodge Caravans Toyotas... pretty much any 3.0L or 3.4L This list isn't even scratching the surface of engineers having difficulty with the concept of spacial geometry.

a shop charges this much because of a few factors: Diagnosing the issue How long the vehicle will take up space on their lot waiting for the part installing the part the mechanics skill - remember he's the one who paid for the ASE cert, went to a trade school and got the training to work on vehicles is it sometimes expensive? sure. but thats what we call 'convenient' so you don't have to spend a complete day of your own time doing what the mechanic can do in a few hours.

I had a hard time focusing on the repairs being done when she was not doing them. Great video as always. My grandfather told me when I was young "never pay someone for something you can do yourself ". I tried to live that way ever since. Has worked for me looks like similar attitude is working for you. Much respect.

I love to see people teaching people how to basic car repairs. Very empowering, plus then you don't get ripped off by shops. Even if you have an honest competent mechanic you can still save time and money by not paying the mark up in labor or parts. Right on Sam.

My crown vic has the same problem with fueling up. I recently put a new tank in due to a hole in it. Sense the new tank I dot remember having and filing up issues now. Also to avoid it clicking off I would just roll the fuel nozzle upside down and it would not click off . I never new about the evap system. Thanks

I paid to watch this video when it was first uploaded to that video sharing site and Sam asked if I would be mad if later it would go up free on YT and I said no. There are probably some cuts in the YT version to keep it clean so I got the editor's cut version :) I'd love to know how Sam got in touch with her but these were awesome collabs :)

Rep;air shops prey on our lack of knowledge about our cars today. It wouldn't surprise me if the shop would have found and replaced the sensor and still charge $914. I was once told I needed an EGR valve and a cat converter ($1000+) due to high NOx. I went for a 2nd opiinion. They found a disconnected vacuum line. An excessively lean mixture will cause high NOx. In the 55+ years of driving, I've never had to replace a cat converter since they became part of the exhaust system in 1975. Leads me to belive that cat converters are replaced due to misdiagnosis or theft. My Suburban had 220k before I sold it. My pickup had 250k miles before I replaced it. My wife's car has 197k and still passes emissions. My van has 120k. All with original cat conveerters.

This is the sole reason I left working for independent shops and dealerships to open my own automotive repair shop. I couldn’t stand customers being ripped off and all the lies. Most, not all places I’ve worked at though. Tons of reviews with a 5 star shop that I’m running.

You think that's bad, try getting a 10 slot electrical panel replaced @ $2000. Went to home depot and got the panel for $40 plus 8 fuse for $60. An afternoon job and two beers later, done deal.

I just did the serpentine belt on my Australian ford fairmont wagon and even with the diagram in front of me (its a decal under the bonnet) I still took two tries before i got it right.
