Alex thanks for this Series. I am seriously looking at getting one of these W220 S600s too. It seems you have the ABC hydraulic suspension and if it only sags after a few days it is no reason for concern really. Excited to see a review of this and how efficient you can get it if you really want to. I drove my 2000 CL 500 with the M113 V8 with 30 MPG!
@fraserdavidson278 Жыл бұрын
Having owned a W220 S600 from nearly new I’d recommend getting a later one. The NA V12s are notorious for oil leaks and general other reliability issues. Get yourself a 2004-2006 one that has the twin turbo V12…it’ll also have the updated interior and lights which make it look a lot less dated, IMO. Although it’s been a long time since I had mine it was an excellent car…Good luck, they can be very costly endeavours!

Great purchase mate, and actually surprised that most of the things work in it. Not surprised by the air suspension, that can be refurbished for not a lot. Prop shaft wouldn't be expensive either buuuut when you get to fixing the engine bits and bobs thats when your going to splash out as most of the sensors for example are stupidly expensive. I've seen these not really straight piped but fitter with sport exhausts and they sound like old V12 F1 cars which is amazing, hope you can achieve that!

Another great video. Although I do wish, when doing the 'living with...' series, that you would cover tax and maybe even insurance groups too. It's all good and well picking up old bangers with fun engines but when it's £600/yr to tax, the costs quickly rack up. And these costs are NEVER discussed 😢. It was a highlight of your picks in the xtrail/jimny video - these two are some of the cheapest 4x4s to tax with the jimny having a tiny engine and the xtrail being predominantly fwd (most off roaders or rwd biased). Missed opportunity!

I drove my 2001 W220 S600 for a good 3-4 years before everything started falling to bits, and ultimately scrapping it (even with only 65,000 miles!). The rust is absolutely awful on the early W220 models, another invasion of Kuwait is needed for the fuel efficiency, and any mechanical work completed outside of what you can do at home requires a second mortgage (mainly suspension)! However, the shear power and torque of the thing, coupled with the ride is wonderful - it's basically like driving a mattress down the road. Not to mention the cool internal features. I look forward to hearing the awesome V12 with a new exhaust, something I really wanted to do on mine!

Rory is right that it has dated, but at the same time, it is still a handsome looking car. You'd never mistake it for being a new car, but I don't think anyone could call it ugly. Right up until you mentioned the air suspension issue, I was genuinely impressed; for 20 years old, it looks actually ok, the interior looks really well kept and the EML could be a relatively simple issue, but air suspension on old Mercs has a reputation for being "fun". Of all the cars likely to ruin you a V12 merc is the top candidate. My Neighbour had a CL600 of similar vintage of the 5 years he had it, it only spent about 9 months in use. Multiple failures and every part seemed to bespoke to the V12 model, they also seemed to have to come directly from Stuttgart with a cost of £1000 (radiator 1k, alternator water cooled 1k, suspension struts 1k, all failed). The V12 was also mapped to shutdown 6 cyls when cruising to save fuel (a la Northstar V8) and alternate the banks so the engine stayed warm all over, this screwed up and it took months to fix with finally the only solution to map out the functionality, further hammering the terrible fuel economy. At least it should get many views of video of it breaking down though.
