So, pretty sure the N57 should have 8 litres in it guys, making your 5 litres very low indeed. Also, stinking of diesel and not having had the DPF removed was probably quite diluted with diesel too from regens. Im confident DPFs and EGRs causing oil dilution and contamination coupled with ridiculous service intervals are to blame to all the failures on these engines.

we recently picked up an f10 530d and noticed this wild service interval thing too. was fresh serviced and the next recommended oil service is like 28,000kms. when i open it in ista i see that there's a coding thing for either 12,000km or 25,000km interval option. i'm newer to diesel ownership but i seems common they gunk up oil quick, it's like it has a longer petrol service interval setup for some reason

The N57 is a very, very reliable engine if you take care of it, especially the single turbo variants. Sounds like you might have a high pressure diesel pump issue or timing chain. If you fix it, the car will easily bring you many more miles. My N57 currently has 400.000km on the clock, starts and runs every time, doesn’t use a drip of oil. Just change the oil every 12k miles at most and you’ll be golden

Fun fact from a 535d f10 owner. The n57 consumes 200g of oil every 1000km (200g every 620miles). If the engine is ran at high rpms this number increases. This means that every 8800km (5500miles) the engine will need a top up. BUT a good rule of thumb would be not to top up but to change the oil entirely, which is actually what BMW recommends. As my f10 is tuned and produces just under 400bhp (it's taken to track days and drag days) I actually follow these guidelines which in turn makes me change my oil 3x a year BUT with 310k km (193k miles) I much prefer routine maintenance over a timing chain snap or rod bearing failure.

@blackknight3830 A hybrid model usually isn't ideal for towing purposes though. I own a face-lift model 2016 Lexus GS450h, and I had the towing hitch installed when I bought it. It is legally allowed to tow 1500kg, which isn't bad, but in the owners manual, it's not advised to do any towing at all (because the transmission doesn't have an oil cooler). I don't tow more than the entire theoretical load of the car (just a few light boats), so it'll probably be fine. I wouldn't tow cars with it.

This car would have been fine if Alex would have kept up with maintenance and did the mandatory timing chain replacement after purchase... which is not the case as it seems. I would only skip the latter if it's documented and proven that a quality job is already done. BTW: Reasonable oil change interval on N57 with egr/dpf still in place is 10k km or 6k miles MAX, absolute max.

@rkmbnt
@rkmbnt 4 күн бұрын
@Ayedidyae and yet there are many N57 cars driving about with high mileage. Design of the car isn't bad but the engine is let down by long maintenance intervals, excessive EGR use (soot in oil), DPF burning (oil dilution by fuel), all of these 3 are present in all diesels in the last 20 years, so dont come talking that BMW is shit. They all are. There's more - every manufacturer shaves off the last gram of metal on anything they put in an engine, it's often done under the name of improving dynamics but its honestly just saving them money. Oil pressures are turned down to save every last bit of energy and then comes the low-rpm driving, which the normal driving mode is optimized to. Most cars today are shit, snapping chains, cranks and whatnot. I can't recall any brands that don't have issues with their diesels from the past two decades. So turn down your BMW=junk mentality. They are not the only ones. Do you even know any reasons why manufacturers have been turning up with crap like this? No manufacturer gives a damn about their product's reliability after 10-15 years because if they did, they'd go out of business. Bad engines often have nothing to do with bad engineering, it's just economics and environment with some marketing bs, plain and simple. Look behind the curtain.

Are you saying there aren't mondeos with chain replacements at lower mileage ? There are a lot of factors you are not even considering in addition to how the chain design was made: Power level, maitnenance, how the car was driven. Late 2016 ish Euro 6 Audi SQ5 TDI Plus. Remap it and you're knocking on the door of 400bhp and 650lb/ft, does nearly 45mpg and takes two dogs, two kids, etc and will whistle down the autobahn all day at 150mph. I have one and aside from its voracious appetite for injectors (you'll learn how to replace these in 10 mins), I love it. I say all of this as the proud owner of a 182k miles F11 520d which I also love - but not for the stupid little electrical gremlins it keeps having - otherwise the damn thing is like triggers broom and just keeps bowling along. (also has done multiple autobahn runs at 145mph)

Not to mention half the breakdowns are caused by regulations fitted hardware such as dpf or egr.
@AI-Records24
@AI-Records24 5 күн бұрын
@Ayedidyae that’s not what I actually said though, is it? The n47 does have a big design flaw you are 100% correct however it’s nothing that can’t be sorted by getting ahead of it going wrong, not my favourite engine because it’s so small anyway I’d never run one of them myself. The 3.0 n57 however is a completely different ballgame and is one of the best diesels you can buy. The b58 is a great engine too, you cannot deny that it’s just fact. Tell me of a better diesel and petrol 6cyl and under engine?
@AI-Records24
@AI-Records24 5 күн бұрын
@Ayedidyae also it’s quite ironic your reply, saying I’m generalising, there’s no middle ground with us whilst angrily generalising making yourself look unhinged not coming to the conclusion of a sane person which is that I like the n57 paired with the zf8 and rear wheel drive or rear biased 4wd for more reasons than it being a perfect engine which no engine in the world is. It’s about a lot more, I like to drive fast, I like to drift, I like to get good mpg on a run, I like a well balanced car that handles nicely and is a good starting point to be able to modify and get more power out of. You cannot give me a good alternative for a daily driver because there isn’t any that meet all the requirements I have for a daily driver. You could put the most perfect engine in a Toyota and at the end of the day they’d make it an unbalanced mo ng pit fwd soulless bore fest with a CVT gearbox. I’ve had a lot of cars, including loads of Japanese cars too so your little unhinged rant was actually properly funny because it was so wrong. You can’t daily a boxer though, an RB for example, it’s not fun when you have to. A car is more than just its engine it’s the whole package, luxury and tech with power and torque, a gearbox that does exactly what you want and a well balanced chassis. Just so happens that bmw at least used to make those perfectly, for a lot of people. Do Japanese cars go down autobahns a lot at over 160 with no problems? Which ones are as good on track from stock? Not many. Like I said I’ve owned a few so I do know, they tend to be great at one or two things but nothing else. At the end of the day let people like what they like and stop being so invested in trying to prove another engine is better because you like it more, it isn’t. Your opinion has no bearing or value in the eyes of anyone else so buy what you like to drive and let others do the same and be happy (and also quiet) about it.

Getting a rail pressure code along with your car randomly stalling on the motor way is essentially pointing to the HPFP CP4 pump going out. The car will crank like yours but there's no fuel pressure, I had this exact same thing happen on my N57. The N57s are known for timing chain failures & the CP4 pumps going bad. Your pump very likely grenaded itself and sent shavings all over the fuel system (injectors, fuel rail, lines, tank). You will need to replace the CP4 pump as well as either clean the entire system or replace it.

A x3m40d/i would be a incredible daily I traded in my long time high mileage hero 328i at 283k miles for my x3 m40i and couldn’t be happier with it it’s quick gets 32 mpg (us) on the highway is extremely comfortable fairly cheap to maintain and as a dog dad it hauls both of them around no problem as well as hauling friends
