I'm a little upset about this one. I took my 2021 RAM 3500 in for "perform service" message on the dash, and the dealer quoted me $4,000 in repairs! I'm going to DIY for about $350!

FYI, chrysler tech here. The "perform service" only means that you need a ccv filter. You don't need the egr cleaning until 120k miles, and even then, they are usually perfectly fine and don't benefit from the service.

Look in your owners manual and you'll find the only thing that needed to be changed was the CCV filter. Ram did away with the requirement to clean the EGR filter when they started using DEF, 2013 as I recall, and the "67,500" service actually jumps up to an even higher interval with the 5th Gens I believe. The actual service manuals have the correct data but the dealers always seem to go with the requirement on the older configurations.

There's no EGR filter. You are referring to the EGR cooler which really gets clogged up on pre-DEF cummins (pre 2013).

I paid 100k for my 2021 ram 3500 with the black widow edition. It’s only got 41k miles on it and the service engine light comes on! The dealership wanted to charge me 85$ just for diagnostic check. I went to Autozone, within 5 minutes I found out what it was. Damn egr valve! For my engine that thing was 995$ thru Autozone. Can only imagine how much thru the dealership! So glad you made this video. I’m sure mine has even less build up than the one shown. Time to get busy under the hood. Ty for making this video. Unless the 2003 Duramax was fitted with an aftermarket exhaust break, you have a lesser truck. Less HP, Less torque, possibly less towing capability. Of course you swapped that for less payments too. For me, the exhaust break is the winner. I can go down a 7& grade towing 11k lbs, set the cruise at 55 and hardly if ever have to touch the brakes. Exhaust brake magic.

I'd buy a Cummins any day, over the other 2 V8 Diesels? After working on a P.O.S. 6.0 Power-Choke, that was done at 150K, the Cummin's is much easier to access main components, and more reliable? A V8 configuration is not as balanced as a straight in-line 6 cylinder? I still think the old 7.3L Power-Stroke is the best diesel Ford ever had?

My 2016 Ram 3500 is very expensive in maintenance. I do the fuel filters myself ($80) in parts. Oil changes I get done at Jiffy lube because it’s just a pain and messy. The dealer charged me about $1500 fir the EGR cleaning. My heater core went bad. That was $2800 including changing the AC evaporator because why not. The dash is already taken apart and it’s a $180 part. I go through tires every two years because the truck is so heavy, it just eats them up. I’ve tried Toyo, BFG and Michelin. The maintenance schedule does NOT require the cleaning of the EGR and cooler. Instead of selling your truck it is good to do the maintenance yourself to save money. I’ve changed my leaking plastic Y coolant to aluminum, oil and fuel filter change, crankcase filter, and my turbo actuator myself. You still need to do the oil change on your differentials, transmission and filter, transfer case which the dealer did for me in an hour. They had a special for $1000 which still seemed high but didn’t want to mess with my Aisen transmission on my 2014 Ram 3500 4x4. I do still drive my 1996 Dodge 2500 as a daily driver with 389000 and California does NOT require smog testing pre 1997. I installed a 2013 seat which makes it very comfortable. I love the exhaust brake on my 4th gen for towing but try to drive my old faithful 12 valve which I still love that I bought new. I bought the Banks Ram intake and will try to do that myself and clean the EGR at that time. My friend lost his engine to the grid heater bolt failure at 120,000 miles. Beware! I did have to change the killer dowl pin on my 1996 12 valve so always something….

Good video Randy. The labor was likely higher because the dealer would have cleaned the egr cooler also. To clean it, you need to remove it. When I do this service in my shop, we disassemble the Egr valve completely, remove the Egr cooler and cooler valve, and soak them in purple power overnight. We also do the egr back pressure pipe and remove and clean the passage under the pressure sensor to the tube. That is the thin metal tube along the passenger side of the engine near/under the cooler. They like to plug up. 4K is a bit much, last one we did was 1300 out the door. And that even included the CCV filter too. They are great trucks, but if the emissions system’s maintenance isn’t done regularly or on time, they can plug up.

Even (some) fleets are agreeing with the assessment that modern diesel light duty trucks (technical definition includes most F450 and under) are more costly in the the total cost of ownership category. Our local utility did a 24 month head to head on service trucks and even EXCLUDING downtime for unexpected repairs. The costs per 100 K miles was 3% less for the identical gas equivalents. They had particularly scathing opinion in the back-up documentation from the fleet logistics manager regarding the diesel-burners unexpected down time % but they left it out of the official report in case it was brand/generation/model specific.

“Anytime you can save XXX it’s a good day” you could have done it all, I get it, some don’t want to fool with oil changes and fuel filters but for what the dealer charges I’ll take an afternoon and do it myself. One thing people neglect to think about is dragging to truck to the dealer and then dragging back to get it when it’s done. My time is money. “Service engine” is for the filter only, cleaning EGR valve is a dealer “gotcha” it doesn’t need to be done. I have a 2020 RAM 3500 with 90,000 miles and have done all service myself (including both differentials, transfer case and trans) and I don’t have $4000 invested, total. Don’t buy anything from the dealer, they gouge DIY people (gots to get paid) the exact same crank case filter you paid $350 for I got for $78 (when I find a deal I buy 2, so I’m ready for next service) Buy only genuine OEM replacement, it’s not much more if you find deals on internet. Find a deal? Buy 2 or 3 that way you are not desperate next time (can anyone say “supply chain issues”? See that big beautiful dealership with everyone running around on golf carts? Yeah, the service department is a big cash cow to help pay for it. Think the dealer will care for your baby better than others? Wrong! Lots of dealers pay tech by what they get done and not by the hour so is advantageous for the tech to fly through jobs. I’ve known techs that make well over $100k per year. They will actually treat your vehicle worse if you don’t play into their higher profit services (everything listed in this video) I took my truck in for an issue (warranty) and when they couldn’t sucker me into $1500 in basic maintenance they called me 4 days later and said “it’s ready” They did nothing, nothing.

Looks simple enough. Only have 13000 on my 2021. I did notice you were engaging the preheat when starting. If you push your start button twice, it will start with no preheat. I assume from your video you are not where I am (Alaska) although I do not engage preheat in summer. That under nut of the pre-heat cable connector is a huge killer of these motors. I plan on installing the Banks kit that will eliminate that bolt. It seems simple as most Banks stuff is designed DIY. Great video!

Delete the EGR system and keep your factory tune or, as you said, get a pre emission diesel vehicle. By the way, I’d recommend you replace the intake grid heater. That’s a major issue on the Cummins and when it fails its ruins the engine.

I have a few comments to add to your video. One you only partially cleaned the EGR system you did not clean the EGR crossover tube or the egr cooler. That is the biggest part that needs cleaned. Also, the small gasket that you used to go in between the EGR and the EGR crossover tube is the wrong one. The one that you took off kind of felt like led correct. The metal gasket that you have goes between the EGR crossover tube and the bypass valve on the flat side. Please change it to the correct one so you do not get a p0299. Have a good one.

Welcome to my road. Bought a 2010 Dodge 2500 6.7 in 2011. I owned it for 3 years and it ran just about perfect UNTIL it got to 100k miles. Then the AC condenser leaked and that cost $2300 to repair. About 6 weeks later, the main ECU went caput. Another 2500 down the drain. After that one I got rid of it

When we do an EGR service we also drain the cooling system, pull the EGR cooler, and soak it... There is a lot of crap in the EGR cooler. If that dealer is like our dealer, then that is why it costs so much for the service in labor anyhow.

Thanks for showing people how to do this procedure. A little more research would let you know that that perform device message will pop up about every 60k mile so that the crankcase ventilation filter will get changed. The dealer will rob you blind. I bought my 2020 Ram 3500 with 40k miles on it in April of 2022. I currently have just over 207,000 miles on it. I’ve changed that filter every time the message comes on. If you buy your own filters and do your own service, you will not spend near what the stealership will charge you. I’d say keep it. It will pay for itself if you have it as a work truck.

I sold my 2021 high country duramax dually crew cab for my 2008 crew cab ltz and eliminated a 1200 a month truck payment and now have a 2008 loaded ltz duaramax crew cab 4x4 paid for. Now, I did do a tune som3 weight reduction as well on my lmm duramax and also sorting all the issues the previous owner neglected on her. Basically, it's a new fuel system from the front to rear along with a fass fuel system. Once everything thing is sorted, im actually doing a lowering kit and a complete repaint on it along with some upgrades. But it's all within budget since I don't have that 1200 a month truck payment any further. Basically sold all my new vehicles and now have everything paid for besides the wife's 2500hd gasser and it will be paid for in a couple of years and I'm don't with new vehicles

Not sure, but my diesel mechanic said the EGR cleaning service is unnecessary for the newer trucks. I have a 2017 Ram with 150,000 miles on it and it runs strong. Mostly highway driving and a lot of towing. Never cleaned the EGR cooler or valve. The CCV filter is super easy and so is the EGR valve. But there is no required maintenance for cleaning EGR valve that I’m aware of. The oil change and fuel filter change costs me $240. The dealer is rippin ya for sure. If you aren’t towing a lot then the Diesel probably isn’t worth it. I haven’t deleted mine but I want to.
