What if autobattle AI is just the heroes acting on their own without your supervision? Without your omniscient view of the battlefield and the stats of enemy units they just blindly charge to their deaths. That's why Askr needs the summoner, because this is what it'd be without it.

It's confirmed in one of Travant's castle quotes that the Summoner has a bird's eye view of the field. The literal quote is "You view our positions on the field as if looking down from sky? Incredible. I see now how valuable you are..." Lyn, Eliwood and Hector's tactician, Mark, is also confirmed to be able to do this in Lyn's conversation with Robin in Fire Emblem Warriors. They even mention "the arrow" used to guide units across the battlefield!

Oh, that's because the AI calculates which unit deals most damage. If you have Firesweep effects, they also get priority
