When GM Got The Camaro Z28 Right - The 3rd Generation F-Body Was A Big Risk That Paid Off

Curious Cars

3 жыл бұрын

The third generation Camaro was a big departure for GM. The styling was not retro - it was in no way tied in to Camaros of the past in terms of being an updated version - the design was all new, and done on a clean sheet of paper.
Released in 1982, it was well received by car enthusiasts and automotive professionals alike, but the main complaint was that it lacked power. Like many malaise era cars, the V8s were all sound and fury that amounted to very little.
Enter the L69 engine in mid-year 1983. This HO 5.0 liter V8 had 9.5-1 compression, very high for the day - it was also good for 190HP and 240 lbs-ft. of torque - pretty good figures for the early 1980s. With Ford's Mustang upping the ante with their 302, the horsepower wars were back on, and continue to this day.
Another big departure for this Camaro was that it handled. A Motorweek test of the Z28 against the Porsche 928S had a surprising result - the Camaro was faster around the racetrack:
• 1983 Porsche 928S Vs. ...
The Camaro was competing as a world-class grand touring car with a German hot rod that cost three times as much - score a win for GM.
That said, this generation does not get the respect it deserves, but that's because of its own success. The cars were so popular, and sold so well, there was pretty much a Z28 on every street corner. Only now are these cars coming back in to their own, and setting new highs on the collector market - and as they should.
Full review and test drive of a 1984 L69 Camaro Z28 with 38K miles. Vehicle for sale at Autohaus of Naples, on the web at www.AutohausNaples.com, or at (239) 263-8500.

It’s funny how in the 80s and early 90s the 2nd gen Camaros were looked down upon as old beat up cars, and the 3rd Gen Camaro was the hottest thing. Now, I kind of like the 2nd Gen Camaros better now that both the 2nd and 3rd gens are equally old (once you get past 20 you’re a senior citizen in car years). I remember the 1st time I saw one in the fall of ‘81. I thought it was a Delorean.
@pdennis93

Lol speaking of that, I was at a car show with a Delorean owner several years ago and some guy walked by 8t and said out loud to himself "what a weird looking Camaro". Exactly agree as an early 80s baby, from the time I can remember f bodies were always my favorite. I remember being 6-7 and there was idk probably a college aged dude with a 3rd gen stick shift and he would always pop the tops out and rip sideways in our Apt complex lol. It was everything to me, then I really started getting into cars and loved how much more tail happy foxes were. But 3rd gens were always my 1st love lol. Then when I was 20 I finally got an 85 IROC 305TPI 700r4 unfortunately, 3.42 posi, 4 wheel disc, hardtop, no power windows, no power locks, no power hatch pull down. It was ok but by then of course rich kids were getting LS fbodies. Blew it up. Swapped in a 300hp 350 with the TPI, 24lb injectors, adj fpr, and was still able to find someone to burn me an 85 Prom. Hooker ceramic coated shorties with the big y pipe. Really woke up. Very soon only had 1st and 2nd gear lol. Swapped a TCI th350, and tci 24-2600 stall. Then it was a consistent runner. LS would still pull away up top, but at least it was in the mid 13s. Blew the 10 bolt, got a nice eaton posi and Richmond 3.42s. Oh yea had all poly suspension bushings, tubular lcas, tubular panhard bar. It hooked up sooo good and was so fun. But TPI had no top end. But being a sbc it was reliable for years. But now a perfect 1 to me would be an LS and t56, done. I miss it. Just got rid of it 2 years ago.

The Mustang 5 L pretty much owned the mid to late '80s and early '90s in the pony car wars. Even against the 350 the lighter Mustang usually came out ahead. Then from 93 on it was all the f bodies up until the Terminator Mustangs of 2003 and 4. Then the GM twins basically quit and Ford had the market again. And then around 2010, it was a driver's race and even Chrysler got back into it! The good old days are back better than ever. It'll be very interesting to see the transition these pony cars make to their eventual electrification...I'm sure

But I've still never forgot him putting his hands on her and her telling 5yr old me to run to a neighbor and call the cops. Then it was custody battles and child support issues. But all of it made me despise my dad for a while. And sometimes I would go a year + without talking to him. But there I was being a dumbass bad teenager, putting my mom through hell without putting my hands on her. After many years me and my dad got a lil closer but hed still do shit like have me at 18 co sign for a car then not pay. Then I'd not talk for a while. I mean I was doin good enough fuckin my own life up that I didn't need his help. Then in my 20s I finally started thinking about everything my mom went through for me so I would do anything for her. Me and my dad were still on and off, I had a kid, we'd go an hour away to pick him up to see her and all he would do is want to talk to me. So that bothered me. And again we'd barely speak, Sept of 2015 I ended up in the hospital for 3 months, he was in a nursing home. We talked once in Oct. Then I came home but didn't reach out. Dec 21st a coroner called and said he died the night before. Now it hurts me because he died alone basically. And now me and my baby moms aren't together after 16yrs, our daughter is 10 and she is everything. So now I really understand where some of his anger may have come from back then but idk what they were fighting about. I just know u don't put ur hands on women. Trust me I've wanted too but u just don't do that. Like maybe if I never seen that I would've cared more for him. Who knows. But now with my own kid I know the feeling if someone might try and take them. But u can't get physical. So its just so hard looking back and it sucks kids have to go through things like that. I get people growing apart, and it sucks but u gotta try and seperate amicably when kids are involved. Cause it really can affect them. Thankfully so far everything in my life has been mainly ok. Hardest part is she moved 2 hrs away and sharing our daughters time is hard. And I just lost all trust in her so everytime my daughter is there I'm worried. It sucks. But I just try and be nice and do whatever to be with my daughter. But if she ever tried to keep her from me, I can see where people snap. But I'm just trying to show my daughter what a good man will do. Cause she is #1. Sorry for the rant.

1997 me: If it's not TPI, I don't care. 2022 me: I will look at any F body that isn't covered in moss under a tree. Our family had 4 of these, 2 IROC's, a rusty '86 V6 and a '89 RS. All died early deaths unfortunately, not making into the 2000s. Seeing these in this condition is a rarity. I see only one red IROC in my area every now and then, same guy and it just looks like a everyday driver. I still enjoy seeing it. Thanks for the review. I grew up with my neighbors goats in my back yard as well, they are best when fenced in until they start making lots of noise.

My dad loved animals and collected them on our farm. He bought a couple goats back in the mid 60s to keep weeds down. He had a new beautiful Lincoln that he used to go on calls to customers with to sell windows. Couple goats got on hood one morning. Not sure what happened to those goats but they suddenly disappeared. Seems like the meat at dinner tasted funny for awhile after that.

No. I had a '86 IROC 215hp and a '90 Mustang LX 225 hp 5 speed. The Mustang was faster and better built, the IROC handled better with it's stock Gatorbacks. Bill's ECM/heat sensor is bad. That's why he had to edit his film, it takes a long time to warm up. GM replaced mine at 49,874 miles. Notice his car wouldn't idle below 2100 rpm when cold. Shifting it at 2100 will damage the tranny. Mine didn't rattle near as bad as this one. That's because I reassembled my el cheapo plastic trim with RTV to quiet the cocaphony of squeaks and rattles this car emits at 40 mph. The next gen Camaro with it's 275 hp LT1 was a much faster car.

I drooled over a '82 exact car for weeks - lovely Z28. A dealer up here in Toronto wanted far too much over sticker for the only H.O in Ontario. Just loved the functional scoops. I settled with (as if) a black Z28 standard 305 engine. Not fast but handled like a dream, and turned heads everywhere! The show Night Rider was fresh... when I shipped my black Z28 to the UK and sold it for about double the original sticker price with the exchange on the dollar only a couple of years after I got it. Next hot ride...87 Torch Red Corvette. Been driving Vettes ever since.

She kept it two years and sold it. By the early 90s they were gone, all to the scrap like most American vehicles. You got 100,000 miles and the cars were trash.

Enjoyed watching your video. Brought back some memories. This exact car except manual was what I had planned for my first car. I got impatient as I was saving and bought a used 81 Z28. Wish I had waited. You were spot on about how underrated it became because there were so many built. Reminds me of what happens to a good song that gets over played on the radio. When you talked about the trouble you got into with your firebird made me smile as well. Probably if I had an 84 Z28 as my first car in Red like I wanted the trouble I got into with my navy blue 81 would have multiplied a few times over. After several years of owning responsible cars and trucks I purchased a 2020 SS1LE (WOW!). It’s awesome to own a Camaro again and not have to drive it on salt covered roads like my first car which obviously was a “only driver”. Your 84 is in really nice shape. Couldn’t tell for sure but looked like around 58,000 mile?? I’ve thought about getting a gen 3 but more as a project (LS swap, suspension upgrade) seen a lot of videos on here that make me think Hmmm? Like one of the other comments. It would be cool to sit down with you over a couple beers and talk cars.
Incredible magic 🤯✨
