Every time you mention the styling and body lines on these various vehicles - I can't help but to stop and think about the giant presses at Fisher Body that stamped the panels out. Back in the late 70's, I worked a part-time job in the Coleman (camping goods) plant in Wichita. I was sometimes put to work on a giant press that punched out the tanks for the propane lanterns. I can only imagine the presses used for these fenders, doors, and other body panels.

Fisher Body had two big plants in the Grand Rapids, Michigan area….one was the interior plant, and the other was the body stamping plant. My dad retired from GM, as did one of his brothers. They were at the Fisher Body Plant 2, I believe. My oldest brother worked there too. They are all closed down now, & for some time….sooo sad.

I remember when you couldn't sling a dead rabbit without hitting a Monte Carlo back in the 70s. They were so ubiquitous that I didn't appreciate them at the time. Bill, if you ever get the chance, I think you should review a Lincoln Versailles. They weren’t a major sales success, but they were pretty advanced for their time. Versailles’ had four-wheel discs standard, first to have an electronic garage door opener, halogen headlights, and clear coat paint. Ford also introduced their EEC I engine control system in the Versailles. The Versailles also had most features standard, making it more expensive than a base Continental or Mark V, much like the Seville. Personally, I think they’re future collector’s items, and they currently go for dirt cheap in comparison to other Lincolns at the time. The 79-80 model years are the ones to get, as they have the more formal roofline, better differentiating it from the Monarch and Granada. A lot of people thought the Versailles was a poor move by Lincoln into the midsize market, but in reality they were pretty reliable, well-built cars, which is not something most American cars can claim at the time.

@@pcno2832 Bill has done many Town Cars, several Marks of various generations, a Blackwood, and an MKS, but never a Versailles. The 1st generation Town Cars have a slightly similar front to the Versailles, which is what you might be remembering.
@pcno2832
@pcno2832 2 жыл бұрын
@@h.e.pennypacker1397 You're right; I just checked and couldn't find one. Oddly, there were not many videos on the page, so I'm not sure if that was a YT glitch or if he takes them down when the cars go off the market. I always found both the Versailles and the 1st generation Seville, while not technically outstanding cars, interesting "silk purse from a sow's ear" stories. The Versailes was a great opportunity for Ford to try out some advanced features without a lot of risk if they failed. Both cars justified their existence better than the unfortunate Cimarron.
@h.e.pennypacker1397
@h.e.pennypacker1397 2 жыл бұрын
@@pcno2832 Interestingly, despite not being a sales boom, the Versailles made Ford a considerable amount of money, much like the Continental Mark series. Most of the existing components of manufacture already existed because of the Monarch and Granada, so loading the Versailles with considerable equipment and an up-trim interior made for high profit margins. I’d almost wish Bill found a Cimarron too, just how we can see how awful they were upfront.

My son was given a 2001 Monte Carlo SS for his first car. He was instantly obsessed with this car, the day finally came, the body was rusting out so bad it was barely fixed to the frame but the engine still purred. Both my sons loved that car so much that we ended up buying another one, same year, same color but this was in mint condition with 70,000 miles. Neither boy was much into cars before the Monte and both are now diehard fans! Thanks for the look back to wear it all started. ❤️

Great video as usual. You’re 1 of about 5 channels that makes me perk up when I see a new video in my feed and I always want to watch right away. I really love how-especially for us old guys who saw these types of cars parked in most spots of our high school parking lots in the early 80s-you bring insights and new perspectives that have been right in front of us for decades now, but we’ve never truly seen or appreciated until you point them out. The long hood. The vinyl top pulled up from the doors to leave a strip of red paint. The elegance of the tail lights. The long hood x2 3 4. And the best one: the adrenaline you get from a Chevy Big Block (and I’m a fan of Fords). And I know. This comment is about as rambling as you get sometimes. Please never change and keep up the great work!

….one of my favorite aspects of your presentations, Bill, is how you “frame the setting” into which cars were marketed…and this ‘72 Monte Carlo is no exception… …I well recall the buzz during the Summer of ‘69, that Chevy was fnally producing a luxury coupe to compete with T-birds…and the emphasis was definitely on the luxury aspect…lots of moody, almost dream-like ad settings ( …one was a slightly foggy, wisteria and weeping willow filled glen with two fashionable sophisticated models admiring the simple slab side styling, the elegant grill, all finished with fender skirts and color-keyed wheel covers… …though the SS was marketed to the gear heads, the major emphasis was on the personal luxury aspect… …GM and the crew at Chevrolet under De Lorean created a HUGE best seller…and they did effectively market this handsome coupe to both the upscale personal luxury AND the muscle guys and gals , too…both distinct and highly profitable buyer segments… …IMHO, these 1st generation will become the preeminently most popular for collectors…and rightly so…

Bill, this Monte Carlo and indeed ALL of the GM intermediates (GP, Chevelle, Cutlass, etc.) we're supposed to have been re-done for '72 following their full-size cars for '71, but there was some kind of snag that prevented it which turned out to be a good thing. '72 was the last year for all of the great (pre-Collanade) body styles. It's important too, because there are that many more of these 50 years later than there would have been.

Love this first generation of Monte Carlo! I'm a Chevelle guy, so that figures, right? I have a really nice 67 Malibu, if you ever wanna see it, Bill, hit me up. Anyway, back to this Monte....I absolutely LOVE the way the side corner markers are integrated into the lower stainless/aluminum/chrome/whatever it is trim. Just such a clean look, almost like a custom car would have. And you can really see where the front end is stretched to make the "A-plus" body. The engine sat so far back that this thing must have had an awesome front-to-rear weight distribution. Imagine this Monte decked out with all the suspension/driveline tweaks to make it a competent road race car. I think it would be an awesome base for a build like that, with some lightening and (dare I say it?) a potent LS engine and a nice 6-speed manual tranny.....SIGH.....transmission! LOL! Thanks, Bill, for bringing us this beauty! Take care, man.

My mother had a 1971 Monte Carlo. Personally, I thought the suspension was too stiff for a luxury car but, it handled well and the cloth seats were very comfortable. The brakes were among the best I have ever used on a car. She had the 350 (5.7) in hers and you could spin the tires on dry pavement only after letting the engine warm up fully. Like all cars of that year, you had to allow the engine to warm up before expecting good performance. I have a 1976 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham and it bogs down until the engine is warm. In the Winter, snow tires were mandatory. The rear ends on these cars were light. I was going around a corner once and hit a large area of sand. I pushed the gas pedal lightly and was shocked that the car did a complete 190. Luckily, no one was coming the other way.

That 72 is nice ,but I'm not sure if they could be ordered with manual 4 speed like you could get in the 70 equipt with a LS-3 (396 with .30 thou overbore to achieve 402 ). To bad that we as consumers don't have the freedom to walk into a GM dealer and order what you wanted as we could back in the day . I'm glad I still have mine although it's not together .70 LS-5 ,missing only 4 options. If we could turn back time ,,,,,just think of the machines we could have enjoyed .But life goes on and the government has been dictating to us as to what you must buy all the way to the point that GM is near death as an American auto manufacture.Sad truly sad .

A 4 speed was offered for '70 with a 350, the small block Turbo Fire 400, and the big block Turbo Jet 400, which was 402 cubic inches. For '71, you could get a 4 speed with the 350 and the 402. After that the 4 speed wasn't offered in a Monte again until the '78 models. A 3 speed on the column was available all 3 years of the first generation. I have a matching numbers '71 402, 4 speed Monte Carlo (1 of 80), and a '70 SS454.

I really enjoyed watching this video. I used to have a 1972 Monte Carlo years ago. It was a joy to drive. Mine was yellow with a black vinyl top. I had the black vinyl interior with a center console. I had the 350 V8 with Turbo Hydramatic. I consider it my classic. Now those were Chevys.

@matrox Chevrolet didn't make one. Why would they waste time and money on one when they had no plans to offer them? They didn't build an LS6 prototype for the same reason.

Bill you’ve done it again. Not just the review of the car, I mean the little flashback to 1972! I was 6 in ‘72 and you brought it all back for me. It was a great time to be a kid. Great review Bill…can’t wait for the next one!

Love watching your videos, normally don't comment, but had to on this one. I had a 72 Monte Carlo about 35 years ago exactly like this, same colors, wheels, everything pretty much, only diff. was it had black cloth seats. I bought the car to resell, and I had to touch up a few minor dents, and when I got done with it, it turned out really sharp. I was pretty proud of it and had it out in the driveway cleaning it up getting it ready to sell, when this woman came walking by on the sidewalk and said this is the CAR! I was like, what CAR?? Then she proceeded to tell me how this was the car that some chick stabbed her boyfriend in the front seat and he died in that car. Of course that was before the internet, but after a little research, turns out it was my car, NICE! That explained the front seat being slightly discolored and looking like it had been scrubbed to death. Well it was still a really good car and no one ever knew except me and my wife at the time and neither one of us was superstitious or anything. Drove that car quite a bit, but I never felt any presence otherworldly or otherwise. But when I watched this video, it did bring back memories. As I said love the videos, love the cynicism, LOL.

Thanks Bill. Animals run into the road because something scared them. I tend not to like bright reds, but I have to say this car looks really, really good. And it looks so correct with the nice thin stripe white walls. Many thanks to Uncle Johnny again. I have complete respect for his being a purist. His cars such as this one are authentic and to me invaluable. Too many original cars have been bastardized and as a result they become pieces that can't be used to document history, as well, not being an original car, they will not drive authentically. I'm thinking this particular car is a California model because of the smog pump beneath the alternator. I recall that it was the following year, 1973, that they became the national standard.

I really like the wheel arches. The car just screams generic 70's film car chase to me and I mean that in a good way. Sometimes a car is just right. Makes me want to get the old playstation out and put Driver in the old grey box.

Thanks for posting this Bill. I bought one of these in my last few months of Highscool. I had a gap year before deciding on what to do next. One thing I did is I got a job at a ski resort in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. The 1970 Monty Carlo I purchased 1978 had a 400cu in small block V8 called the Turbo Jet. Before me, someone put "highway gears" in the rear end. This meant from a dead start in sucked but I could take it up to 90 mph in Second Gear. This was an incredible vehicle. My Dad used to test drive formula one racing cars in development in the late 1950's. He taught me many things. One of them was to have good slightly fat high performance tires and a solid if not marginally upgraded suspension system. With this as my foundation I had many adventures on winter and summer mountain highways in my Monte Carlo, drifting corners at 70-80 mph was one of them. I never had any issues in snow or ice and at no time did the vehicle vibrate no matter the speed, unlike many Fords or Dodges that tended to float, vibrate, and wander around at high speeds. I buried the needle many times and the Monty was always solid as a rock. It was bronze with a black vinyl roof and fender skirts, a front bench seat, air conditioning, 8 track. Pretty basic but I loved that car. Sadly I had to sell it when deciding to go to college, and bought a 65 Plymouth Valiant Barracuda that had a slant six and didn't burn my wallet out on gas. The 1st generation Monty kind of reminds me a bit of the 1st generation Buick Riviera in styling, design and road stance. Edit: The 400 sml blk V8 in my Monty had a 4 barrel, which could have been because it was sold in Canada, or someone before me put it in. Whereas the 400 sml blk V8 in the States was only a 2 barrel apparently.
