We should mention that the FF had a longer wheel base to accommodate the added equipment. This is seen in the extended front guard (wing in UK speak) behind the front wheel arch. This was disguised with the double vertical vents.. These masterpieces were a perfect homologation of British finesse and American muscle.. Cheers from Aussie..

I had a 1973 Jensen SP with the 7.2 L engine and the six pack carburettor. It was beautiful to drive and I took it on a regular basis from Suffolk to the North of Scotland. In those days the A9 did not have average speed limits so on some stretches I could let it rip up to 120! I wish I did no have to sell it!

I was once on a road trip in my little Triumph GT6 and came up behind an Interceptor on a lovely twisting hilly section of highway. Someone had put a high-compression head on the GT and spent a lot of time on the details, I put a Toyota 5 speed in, the car was (and is) a dream to drive. I attempted to keep up with the Jensen and was astonished that I couldn't. We were both going for a ferry, and in the lot I spoke with the owner and learned about this wonderful car. The owner was gracious enough to compliment me on "keeping up". A wonderful memory of a great road trip.

Another car I’ve always adored. I remember as a young lad, my father and his business partner John, had a big whisky bottle full of coins and notes in their office, with “buy Malc and John a Jensen Fund” written on it. Sadly neither of them ever got one, dad had a Scimitar SE5a GTE at the time and John had a 240 Mercedes.

The 383 cu inch 6.3 was known as the G series , the later 440 inch , essentially a de tuned Dodge Charger unit was known as the J series , although of larger capacity had a lower compression ration , designed to run on 2 star fuel in its day . The smaller engine was fitted to Mk1 and Mk 2 Jensen Interceptor models and a small number of Mk3 models before the larger low emission model became standard. The earlier engine was known to pick up revs slightly quicker than the 7.2 . Either way , it’s easy performance with the Jensen , huge torque at low revs matched to the wonderful torque flight auto box, 30 - 50 mph in 2.3 seconds says it all. Wonderful car

The FF used a 383 Golden Commando spec motor. A few of the very early Mk3 440s had 4BBL engines that weren't de tuned! Very nice those! Later on the SP came with the most powerful 440 ever fitted to a Jensen. Along with the Hemi that was the most powerful muscle car engine ever supplied in a Chrysler muscle car, and went into the Jensen "as is". All Jensen needed to do was put a small dent in the air cleaner for bonnet clearance!

Arrrrh, what? The Chrysler 'big blocks' are the "B" and "Raised B" ( often written as "B/RB" ) for the B-series V8 and the Raised Deck Height version. The 170ci Slant Six is the "G" block, and the 255 and later 198 the "Raised G".

Very nice. One of my favourite colour combinations for an FF. Shame it is up for sale, but hope the owner gets to enjoy it for a weekend and they might just change their mind! We have owned 10 FFs over the years, but never an Interceptor. Always maintained them ourselves. Parts have not been a major problem. The FF's double wishbone front suspension and disk brakes are well designed, effective, reliable, easy to service. Jensen designed a beautiful removable cradle, a sub frame that houses the engine, front diff and lower wishbone. I think the access and maintenance is easier on the FF than the Interceptor because of that front end. The only tricky job is removing that driver's side exhaust manifold. The manifolds glow red in use after spirited driving and almost stress relieve themselves to the particular car and can last decades without blowing once they are on properly because they don't use or need a gasket. I would be tempted to leave them on the car if you are not yet sure abut keeping it.

The home office around 1969 commissioned a fleet of Ford Mk 4 Zephyrs with the same four wheel drive system with anti lock brakes as per the Jensen. Under the bonnet there was a counter that recorded the number of times the anti lock braking system operated. They were sent out to various Police Forces for evaluation. I was a member of Lancashire police H.Q.Traffic Patrol at the time. When two officers from another traffic group showed me around one. I was suitably impressed by far to low down the pecking order to have a go. I was only in my early 20's.

Top whack was 130mph (at 5,000rpm, the 383's hydraulic tappets would start to 'pump up' at sustained rpm higher than this). The magazine averaged 13.6mpg overall in its test (naturally, 5-star only!)

I pulled out the book and wrote the check..Done. We put 145000 miles on that TC in 3 years..After they made good on a replacement transmission and engine in the first 25ooo miles, all was golden with that car. It ran an honest 126 MPH flat on, and 0 to 60 in 7.3 seconds..I did do a bit of tuning to it to make it move better..Brakes were the hardest to tune..required larger wheels and a host of suspension mods.

Top speed is around 140 based on road tests of the era. Limitation was the 3sp gearbox. The 2.88 ratio with the 185/70R15 tires was a compromise for acceleration and speed. Many of these cars have now larger tires, so they can actually go a bit faster. If you use a more modern cam with more lift and duration (stock cam was actually the smallest cam Chrysler offered at the time) you will go even faster.

@@iain_tyrrell Funny enough, the fastest car that Benz was building at the time was the 600SEL, 6.3 V8 fuel injection OHC 4 sp auto. Despite the excess exposure in the press as the fastest car in the world. its top speed was only 134 mph according to the tests of the era, and its 1/4 mile time was about the same as the Interceptor, despite the extra gear, and all the engine complexity. The Chrysler big block was one of the best, if not the best, American engine that could provide flat torque curve, good top end, reliability, and simplicity. Engines from GM and Ford could provide reliability and simplicity, but had trouble providing both flat torque curve AND upper end, they could do either one or the other. This is why Jensen, Monteverdi, Facel Vega, etc. chose Chrysler. The main issue of the Jensen III with the 440 was the compression ratio, only 8.2:1. Most of the exhaust emissions equipment as installed in 1974 American cars was absent, but the compression ratio remained, apparently because it would be too hard for Chrysler to provide a low production engine only for Jensen. But in compensation, we have the Jensen SP with left overs 440 six packs. These engines had the hotter cam that Chrysler built, and had performance almost as good as the Aston Martin V8s. The Aston with the 5 sp would be a bit faster than the SP, but I suspect the 3sp auto Aston would not be any faster than the SP. I do not have a road test of an Aston 3sp. Cheers...

These are some wonderful cars, and this one turned out really nice. Hopefully it will find a nice new home. Regarding the transmission - the most misunderstood part of the Torqueflites is the "kickdown" linkage. Firstly because it's not that at all, but it's actually a pressure control linkage. Secondly, if the linkage is disconnected it will result in 2 things: a very smooth and early shift, and the transmission will burn inside. Hearing that the linkage was not connected will set off red flags with Mopar people, hopefully the transmission survived. Why the "kickdown" name? Because it also does that. Full throttle means full pressure and it will force a downshift if possible and also holds the gear for much longer.

I've had the privilege to drive both the FF and the standard 440 powered Interceptors. If ever there was a British equivalent to an American muscle car, these are it. Loved those cars.....

Cracking video and a beautiful car ! They were so advanced for their time it makes you wonder what they’d be making now if the company was still in business. Fascinating history this particular car has too !

328 FFs were built, 15 were Mk3, I used to own chassis 326. The Mk3 FF stayed with the same 383 engine, because the FF chassis (which is significantly different to that in the Interceptor) wouldn't allow the 440 engine to sit low enough for the bonnet to close. (The 440 engine was quite a bit taller than the 383.) Strange you didn't mention the torque splitting 37/63 front/back, or the central diff limited slip system ... unlimited front over-run, zero front under-run. Rebuilt the whole engine and Torqueflite. Also rebuilt the transfer box - more from curiosity than need. They could handle in excess of 800HP, as a drag racing friend in America proved, so nothing wore out in normal use. VERY over-engineered. Shame about the Maxaret, too (the control unit for which is still visible in the clip @ 6:23) . I eventually fathomed everything out and totally rebuilt mine. In the Mk3 they replaced the painted Chrysler rocker covers with their own branded aluminium ones.

My first car had that same engine, it was a Plymouth Satellite ( ex police car) and bought for $600 back in 1977. I remember it was quite power full. I think the Jensen Interceptor look fabulous, it would be great as a restomod.

I really like Jensens. I've seen some of them and they are one of my favorite, classic GT cars. They have something very unusual about them that most other GT cars from the time or even now don't have - and that's a roomy interior.

Iain you need to take your cars you get to drive on the A550 from Hawarden Village to Dobshill, AKA Tinkersdale. The road is only a few miles from your Garage and it's recently been resurfaced and it has some pretty tight corners and would be perfect for your videos.
