This 1969 Cadillac Sedan DeVille Was The Ultimate No Compromises American Luxury Car - Plus Incident

The late 60s C-Body luxury cars from GM, and particularly the Cadillac models, were the ultimate expression of full frame and big cubic inch luxury - OPEC and the gas crunch were right around the corner, Federal emissions controls were coming in to play, and safety engineering was changing how cars were built.
But in 1969, when this car was built, gas was 35 cents a gallon, horsepower was the word of the day, and if Americans wanted big, powerful, luxury cars, then GM was going to build them.
This truly was a different world, and Cadillac's "Standard Of The World" slogan was thought of without irony - this was a well built luxury cruiser that could be maintained and driven indefinitely.

I would have left him bruised and bleeding with the Caddy, with a real close aproximation of an, [I just got raped by the family dog} look on his face for that move. Followed within the week with a very curtly worded letter of separation in his rectum. No professional business would tolerate that kind of public display of disrespect. Oh yeah, the car wasn't bad either, lol. P.S. I coulda done a better job on the windshield with my backside.

I remember when these 1969 Cadillacs were Brand New. I spent a lot of time at a particular Cadillac Oldsmobile dealer in the late 1960's..into the 1970's. The smooth, quiet ride, the cool, quiet, air conditioning the beauty and scent of the Ostrich grained leather. The smooth power of the 472 Cadillac V-8 was awesome! There was nothing better!!!

The local Cadillac dealer here had been in business since like 1910. If you bought one from them they would kiss your ass and polish your knob endlessly. Oh, would madame like to have here hair styled during the oil change? And let use clean the inside and outside and wax the car no charge. Make those whitewalls shine. Please partake of out complimentary smorgasboard as you please. They were a great dealer. Out of business now. The other Cadillac dealer in town was caught defrauding the Feds on parts purchases and they were all thrown in jail.

I Remember when these 1969 Cadillacs were brand new in September, 1968, and I was completely appalled at the black plastic instrument cluster! The 1967 and 1968 Cadillacs had a metal, chrome instrument cluster. However, compared to what GM markets as a "Cadillac" today, the 1969 Cadillac looks better than GM could ever come up with again! Back in 1969, GM gave you a wide choice of colors, interior, and exterior..Not so today!

The 71 GM models was the beginning of the plastic interiors from door panels to the dashboard. That cheapened the appearance. Little did we know 25+ years later car bodies would be made from a new plastic merged with metal that would crack like glass when in an accident.

In 1970 they replace most of the black plastic with plastic wood. I liked the 1970 dash much better. 1967 Cadillac started cheapening the interiors. 1966 Caddy used real wood, for the Fleetwood Broughams anyway, I think the Devilles were metal.

I know what u mean. Ive always loved Cadillacs from my early youth (11) until they started producing s----y nothings (80 thru now). Back in my youth, there was a funeral home on my street, & I would love to see the Cadillac hearses & Cadillac Sedan De Villes, all lined up at the home or churches, from 1958-1967, all matching midnight blue & all the funeral home staff wearing midnight blue attire. Now the funeral home equipment is black, the staff wears black, the families wear black, how are u supposed to know who's who?, but those were the good ol' days & I wish they would come back.

My father bought a 1970 Sedan Deville in 1972. It was green with camel leather and a black vinyl top. He decided he could buy a two year old Cadillac for the same price as a brand new Caprice. He bought it from an estate. The original owner had passed away. The car was extremely low mileage. The owner's son told dad that his father never drove the car over 45 mph. Even on the interstate. I remember the car hiccupping and chugging while my dad floored the accelerator and let off all the way home, attempting to burn carbon off the plugs. He finally got it running good. My dad drove the car 80mph on the interstates. We would take long Sunday drives every week, going down the roads less traveled. What great memories.

Despite what people now think they actually handled quite well, even though the steering was as light as a feather and the suspension soft. That's why the first thing you should do on an older car is to replace the tires. Unless you're just going to show the car and not drive it, having the original tires on the car are of no benefit as the rubber goes bad over time, no matter how many miles are on the tires.

The crest on the trunk was modified at some point. Originally it would have been mounted with a small spring loaded pivot. You would rotate the crest up to reveal the trunk lock. The pivot and spring probably gave up years ago so the solution was to drill a hole in the crest and glue it back on. I know this because my parents had one, medium metallic blue with white top and while interior. New England winters killed it long time ago with major rust as most cars did back then in the northeast. This one is in marvelous shape, thanks for showing it......................................................Ok, I just finished watching the video, glad to see you stayed safe in the left turn lane. Sorry if I am chuckling at your difficult morning drive, but like I said, glad you stayed safe with all that. Cheers.

Bill you are absolutely amazing, I'm in the UK and found your videos accidentally and am absolutely addicted, they are not just hilarious but you have taught me so much about the 60's 70^s and 80^s Americano which has amazing for cars. What is it with all the wildlife in Florida, is there no animal control your being harassed. I have to get the train to work and it can take up to two hours each way and you make it bearable, keep posting the videos you make my day.

Wow, the sheet metal clank of that hood and trunk lid! Long time since I heard ones like that. Yeah the durable transmission. Didn't Rolls and Bentley go with some of those? Greetings from Toronto Bill, I'm all chipper about your renewed channel

Yes, I've heard Rolls used the TH400 trans too back in the day because it was so good. I currently own a '76 Coupe De Ville and recently sold a GMC 1-ton pickup I owned for 30 years with the same transmission. Clearly, the best shifting, most reliable transmission I've ever experienced. My current, and far more modern vehicles aside from the Cadillac, provide better fuel economy, but have annoying shift characteristics. I hope they hold together like the TH400 does.

My father bought a brand spanking new 1970 Cadillac, Coupe Deville with (literally) all the options known to man... well, known to Cadillac anyway. One winters day he asked me to brush the snow off of his new pride and joy... So, what does my ingenious 10 year old brain decide to do? Get a soft broom and gently push the snow from the car? Nope... I took the massive snow shovel and scraped it off that way! Good lord, he beat my dumb ass so hard I couldn't walk for a month! lol. (can't say as I blame him) Great stuff, Bill. You really do an excellent job, you know your car history, no doubt! And Yes Bill, we did indeed have a "good time back in '69"! (BTW., What does your so called "Detailer" use to clean the windows, silicone?!?)

I have seen a movie from 1969 it a called “2001 a space odyssey” actually 1968 and it’s absolutely gorgeous. It’s because of this movie and Kubrick’s genius that people believe he was involved in faking the moon landing. In his movie Dr. Strangelove the interior of a bomber was duplicated to a “T” even though its schematics were supposedly kept secret.

My dad was VP of a bank and he couldn't afford one of these monsters, so he drove Pontiacs, However, the bank president/owner bought his wife this car in 1969 for her to go shopping in. It was a gorgeous dark green with a green upholstered interior. I remember how high the back of the front seats were, and how thick they were. Ultra luxurious!

I know, for sure, those are ducks in the Cadillac crest. I remember when the Cadillac Catera came out way back in like 96 or 97, the extremely sophisticated advertising campaign featured a yellow cartoon duck that came to life out of the logo to proclaim the Catera as “the Cadillac that zigs.” Otherwise, just another 4 (exasperated) sigh Friday for Bill. 😋

That hole in the trunk lock crest is not correct. It's supposed to rotate with the lock underneath. The trunk mat is not original but out of a later car as well.

What a nice car. My grandfather had a 1968 Cadillac Sedan Deville which was the 4-door pillar less which ever you call it. He ran over a firebird in it. He was able to drive the car home the firebird was totaled. It just bent the corner of the bumper. They were tanks. I enjoy your videos. I laugh my ass off. Love the way you describe cars and etc. Thumb up...

I LOVED the '69..those tall seat backs and head rests plus the BEST back lights ever...LOVE those red lantern stop lights, only one year to have them (big mistake CADDY...) PLUS - the rubber ring on the inside of the whole steering wheel to blow that big 4 note horn...THAT was awesome, no matter where you hand was, once squeeze and thar she blows.

This is the best video of yours so far. My dad bought a 69 SDV just like this one brand new in 1969. I remember it rode on the highway so smooth and silky. When going over slight hills it would literally float back down. It rode better than the '76 sdv. You're right. Back in those years (pre 71) the cars were built to last with proper maintenance. I assume the car you have came with an interior dress up package as the door trim and dash panel have the wood look and split leather seat. A very nice 51 year old car. Just like a woman, getting better with time.
