I was looking to buy a 4x4 in the late 90s when i was just out of high school. I asked the local mechanic what he thought of Jeep Wranglers. He told me if i get a wrangler, that me and him would become very close friends and that i would help put his kids through private schooling. He was the most honest mechanic I've ever met. And he was a 4x4 mechanic only. Hard to believe that in that time, Jeep seem to have gone even further downhill. For context, I owned a MQ Nissan Patrol shorty petrol manual at the time, and was looking to upgrade and was considering wrangler and Land Rover defender and Toyota landcruiser. I bought the Landcruiser and still drive that thing to this day. No issues with it. It just goes. That’s what you need for using in Victorian mountains

I remember when only three things would stop a car from moving: a lack of fuel, a lack of spark or a disconnect of mechanical intergrity. Now the number of peripheral items that can stop the car from moving is almost infinite. These designs are unrecognizable as cars.

Totally agree, fuel, spark, compression. Now it could be the cpu or some esoteric setting in the menus. Once I rented a car in Canada and it would not go uphill on a road with slight snow or ice, had to find a differential setting buried deep in the menus and turn it off. My 1962 EJ Holden would have simply driven up the hill. Waste of about an hour by the side of the road.

Ultimately it's spark but it bears mentioning, don't forget lack of downhill. How long until the manual goes extinct? When battery replacement was optional as long as you could at least find a suitable park or when you were always carrying friends.

I had to put up with my other half’s Grand Cherokee for years, which she’d bought new, during which time it pretty much always had something wrong with it, eventually dying with less than 100,000 km on the clock stranding us and our two small children (including a newborn) interstate over a public holiday weekend. The repair cost for the transmission was going to be 3x the sale value of the vehicle, so that was fun. It’s not just me though, our best mates had a jeep too and sold it within two years due to constant problems. I have dissuaded many friends from considering a jeep.

When Jeep issued a recall for a 'programming issue' I challenged them over costs. The nearest Jeep dealership is 80 miles (3 hour drive one way) for me and would have taken a full day for me to attend. I did take the vehicle to them but then billed them for my time and all expenses. After a few too-and-fro's and my threat to take them to the Small Claim Court they settled the bill along with a letter disclaiming all liability and that the payment was a one-off. I suspect ALL dealerships would be liable to such expenses as the fault is not of your making and should never cost the owner a penny to repair. Just takes a little determination and a 'bulldog' wife.

John, I doubt very much that the "service" team took the car out of the workshop to test it, relying instead on the diagnostic machine. I had a problem with a Ford XR6 ute where, if you accelerate from 40kph to 100kph to join a parkway (in Canberra) as you hit 97kph, the engine would start running roughly, shudder for about 5 seconds then smooth out and accelerate to 100kph. Still under warrentee, I took it to the local Ford dealer in Canberra and each time they wore blind they had fixed it only for me to test it going home and finding that they hadn't fixed it at all. I kept taking it back, I described in detail how to replicate it but time and time again, they failed to find it. Diagostics reported No.2 cylinder having issues but that was it. On about the 5th return, the manager admitted that the head mechanic FINALLY took it out on the road and was able to deplicate the issue. Seems they were not able to replicate the problem in the workshop. They still couldn't fix it though.

Oddly despite Range Rover / JLR reputation the 'new' 2020 Defender model is coming up 5 years old and they have proven to be very good for reliability. I know owners 2 owners and they both had zero problems in 4 and 3 years of owning. Couple of early famous KZbin vids on fails keep getting the views but other than than 10's of thousands of solid ones doing well.

But is 22:57 a Jeep Compass really a Jeep? Or a Fiat in Jeep clothing? Probably no difference anyway!
@brettt8246
@brettt8246 Ай бұрын
It's a Fiat (in Jeep clothing) made in India. What else could you do to make the vehicle more shit- have an indifferent dealer network. As JC has said in an earlier story, the dealers know what the problem is and there's 30 queued out the back waiting with the exact same problem which explains the week's wait!

A 4wd Club member bought a new 1998 Wrangler for $40k. He spent $10k on Jeep accessories...and had a 5 year "no cost" bumper to bumper warranty. The repairs cost Jeep $5000 per year. His most spectacular breakdown was "fixed" when he used a pine tree as a travois strapped to the axle and jammed under the body and grinding down as it drove along ......... when the left rear wheel/axle left the vehicle out in the bush...... Immediately at the 5 year anniversary he sold the Jeep after making a fibreglass mould of the Jeep grille.... He then built a Toyota V8 Landcruiser/Hilux/Lexus based "special" attached to that grille... He still buys Jeeps on his company's dime...with full warranty...and sells them when the warranty expires. He gets great service and loaners when the Jeeps break down.. He still has a Toyota special behind that fibreglass grille for reliable offroading...

I'm one of those 30,000 Jeep buyers of 2014 and earlier this year, sold mine after the transmission shat itself. It took a full two months to get a written report (that I had to pay for, of curse!) about what the problem was. But it was the previous 12 months of trying to get the Jeep service department to answer or even return my calls that persuaded me to listen to my wife (a retired barrister who told me NOT to go through the stress of fighting with an organisation that can afford "better" lawyers) and just buy a more reliable set of wheels. The Jeep dealershits of south east Melbourne are absolutely pathetic and I hope they go the way of the dodo, just to save others from buying this brand of crap. So, thank you, John, I also listened to YOUR advice and purchased one based on manufacturer reputation and customer service satisfaction.

Was DH awarded compensation for legal fees? That aspect was not clear to me from your report and is an issue in our consumer law that should be made mandatory. I had a Jeep and after my experience with their customer “service” am an avowed, avid and lifelong voice against the brand.

Yes, the cost of the filing fee ($367). DH was self-represented, so had no other legal fees.

The phrase "Fit for purpose" clearly means nothing to the dealer network who sell jeep to the Australian public. The $80 diagnostic fee should've been gratis, with no argument. 31 calls that went to voicemail without reply is inexcusable. I bet the salesperson that "Sealed the deal" would've made a bit of a song and dance about D.H.'s purchase from their dealership. Ive never had much regard for jeeps built after 1985, (durability, reliability archaic design concerns) etc. Money better spent elsewhere, in my humble opinion. To be stalled and mucked about by a bunch of shiny suited salemen and service managers is the pits, when these people who are on commission to sell vehicles to people, their word and their hand shake must mean at least something other than a hollow gesture....besides, their living depends on it.....

Tip Not specific to any brand, When you get these kind of issues that keep recurring there are two possible simple issues that can be resolved easily. One is a failing battery (or excessive load caused by too many gadgets etc) there other is bad ground connections. If you are getting low voltage errors on the scanner do a battery health check and total load check to see if it has a bad battery or alternator. Also physically look for broken or missing ground connections. A temporary fix and test is to take a set of jumper cables and connect the battery negative to the engine and a suitable place on the body. If after you fit the cables the problem disappears you will know that bad ground connection was the problem.

There're so many electronic systems in Jeeps now that it'd make the worlds nerdiest kid head spin. Shitty electronics. There're so many complains that the dealerships just don't care. They lure you into buying their car and treat you like crap when the problems appear.

On my 2020 Ford Escape, when it gets over 100F inside when parked, the shift dial refuses to move. You have to open the windows and try to get the A/C to point down to the dial. When it cools off a bit, it works. Ford said they fixed it, but alas, on another summer day, still broke. Wife goes into panic and I have to deal with that. FuckItAll.

I always remember going to Florida and visiting the space centre and looking in an Apollo command capsule. As a wireman who rarely if ever used a cable tie to see poorly laid out wires stuffed together like a 4 year old might have done it in a machine that was critical to get three men to the moon and back I was shocked much as I hoped that any subsequent astronauts wouldn't be if they got too close to this mess. Considering the investment there you would have thought someone with the necessary skills might have been employed as it looked like a typical teenage uni student trying to connect up his project to the lab power supply. Move then to cars and you then see how it is possible to create crap behind the dash of any vehicle because you can put in any old rubbish with poor insulation displacement crimps and then cover it all up in plastic and no one would think anything of it. I remember the first time BL used blade crimps to connect wires in things like Landy's or worse the Rovers generally of that time and it was clear that this wasn't something that was going to be designed for life unless it was for 10 minutes. Still the Suzuki ones were best as not only did the crimps not work the wire was so thin it couldn't carry enough current to light the tail lights let alone start the engine. Just about every wire in that sh** box my mum had needed to be replaced.
