33:46 *HEAR HE! HEAR HE!* That's how you deconstruct those Positivism Psychologists who tell us to always expect the best from other people and then reality faces you at 2AM with a sucker punch minus your phone, your wallet and some precious blood. Absolute ground based advice for personal security. Like with a Kubotan, you can hit the nose, the teeth, an eye or the Sphenoid bone of the head of an attacker with a tactical defense torch light, and all of these are pretty effective. Like one of my teachers taught me, _in the jungle no one asks for permission!_

Hi John, I worked in Servo's for years and whilst happily I have never witnessed a static fire, the Company have definitely sent through real world video's and pics of them happening. The flow of fuel through the hose generates static electricity, so we were always instructed to never authorize the pump unless the fuel container, steel or plastic, was placed on the ground. As you say, if the container is earthed, you have much less chance of a static electricity fire. They are a real thing. Scale it up - the tanker drivers take static extremely seriously. I hope your dad is ok. Cheers mate.

A friend of mine who was a journalistic photographer in his youth came and thanked me one day. I had once told him that his camera flash was a potent weapon in the dark as you get a few seconds to do what you want on someone, like flee, or kick them in the nuts etc. Anyways, he was mugged by two when returning to his car after taking photos at an event and was carrying his camera in his hands with his highest power flash mounted. They wanted the camera, so he took a photo straight in their faces making them blind for long enough for him to run. Bonus feature was that he had an image of the muggers to give to the police (don't know if it was good or if the case went anywhere)

John, about static electricity. A nasty trick we would play on apprentices was, on pre 80s cars with the metal air cleaner units held on with wing nuts, with the engine running, ground a piece of electric cable and hold the other end to the air horn. A large spark could be drawn from the horn. We would tell em they fked something up and watch them tear everything apart looking for the source of the "electrical" problem. And to the dude scoffing at static charge starting fires, ask Ford about why they had to put earth rings in the plastic fuel tank necks on XD Falcons.

Dear John. To clarify my called-out STROBE mode comment, I've done some sneaky research (User Manuals). 😉 My wife & I have Olight torches. Mine is an Olight R50 Seeker Pro LE (Law Enforcement), & my wife's, is a Seeker 2 Pro. While neither has a tail switch, they both have the STROBE function. To initiate STROBE mode, simply press the side button 3 times. Too easy. 😀 In truth, neither were purchased as everyday carriers & the STROBE mode wasn't something we planned to use. It's not empowering to disorientate a home invader and then dash out of our home in our 'jamas. 😀 In any case, I have a threatening weapon attached to my groin by a coupla nuts.

30:25 My friend. Well, my platonic one-sided lover, you would hate most of my videos. "Umm", and empty space silence seems to have become a thing for me over the past week and a half. The power was cut on the property where I rent a patch of dirt for my bus about a week and a half ago, so ive been frugal with my desktop puter use. However, back when QLD had that major outage due to the generator explosion at Bilo, I bought a 3000-watt pure sine wave ULP genset. I was also buying bits for a mobile solar setup. Anyway, I serviced the genset and used the 10 litres of fuel in that intermittently over the past days. I also threw a quick and nasty setup of my now complete solar kit, so I didn't have to run the genset all the time. I'll have the entire setup finished tomorrow and will probably shoot some video.

Actually, a small solidly built torch makes an excellent defensive weapon in it's own right. If a person was going to perhaps do some defensive martial arts course, something like Fen Quan would give some insights into how this works. Anything only slightly longer than the width of your fist can be used to good effect. Of course it's best to not get in that situation in the first place so shining a bright light stands as a good a chance as anything. I also note that most hospitals have security guards, and they are quite happy to walk staff to their vehicle in the wee hours of the morning. It's also best to move around in groups, so at the end of the shift it's better to go as a group rather than straggle out individually if possible.
@Perusalstein
@Perusalstein 10 ай бұрын
Beware even of so-called security guards. My wife (a nurse) was accosted (groped, assaulted) in the hospital carpark around 10pm after her shift by the accompanying security guard who had placed himself in the gap between the car and the open (driver’s) door, after she’d sat down in her car and was inserting the key into the igntion. She didn’t see it coming (tired after work?) and it wasn’t a fight or a mugging, but it did amount to sexual assault. He would not stop, even when she screamed, so she immediately started the car and drove off with him clinging to her and to the door. He eventually let go before she drove out of the car park.. Identified, charged, convicted.. Maybe a tactical torch could have helped, but she wouldn’t have thought to hold one when she was supposedly being protected.

I just finished watching a video review of the 2023 Yukon Denali and it scares me a bit the tow capacity that the manufacturer lists. The towing capacity for the Denali is 8,200 lbs and it has a curb weight of 7,400 lbs. Am I wrong to think that if someone tries to tow 8,000+ lbs behind this vehicle and the load shimmies and starts to sway that it will for sure end very badly? I assume that people who buy this type of vehicle would not be trying to tow things this heavy. However, if it is marketed this way, someone will try it. It brings back that nightmarish video that you posted a while back with the trailer that started to sway and eventually sent the tow vehicle into the guardrail at highway speeds.

I've always found strobe mode to be just as disorienting for my eyes (the user) as it was for a person I'd be pointing it at. Just turbo it. And a smart use of your torch is to look around in the dark and help you alert yourself earlier to an unlikely, yet possible, ambush. So there's that.

Those Aussie pumps with the latch pin removed are a pain in the arse. Here in New Zealand, they don't do that. Thankfully. I think it's fair to say we don't have an epidemic of fuel station fires. A couple of weeks ago while travelling in Tasmania I had to refuel the rental car before taking it back to the airport. Solution to your stupid pumps? Shove the fuel cap thread under the lever and stand back until it stops. At least if it's pissing down I don't have to stand in the worst place possible. So there's that.

This episode of Auto Expert shinning an (O)Light on all things Common Sense, seriously! The use of Segue Ways in transitioning seamlessly from one idea to another was peerless. One must always remember that life is not always fair and those that rally against this premise are really placing their faith in Adam and Eve and the Garden of Eden (Biblical Earthly Paradise), where everything was fair and every child gets a prize. Presumably, although not mentioned in the report The Garden of Eden had it's own Petrol Station, Static Electricity hadn't been invented and all plastics were recyclable.(ie hydrocarbons were in use) The true hero's amongst us are those that suffer significant bad luck, survive and just get on with life, so there's that. John, I've got some questions I dunno how to google :/ Im sure im not explaining anything new to you but im going to state my thoughts so you know where im coming from. Why are super-capacitors not used supplementary to batteries in EV's? From what i understand, they charge and discharge more efficiently, simpler materials and construction, cheaper to produce with fewer resource supply issues, have minimal lifetime degradation. The major downsides are the energy density, and that they leak charge fairly quickly. in phevs and evs, wouldnt it help performance and battery life to use a mix of energy storage? maybe a super capacitor with prius wattage to be used in cases which the EV motor would be used in a hybrid? I know EV's with petrol powered range extenders are less efficient than comparable hybrids, I assume a lot of that inefficiency comes from heat loss. would it be reasonable to build a more appropriate engine cooling/waste heat recovery system? It adds complexity but in mind of efficiency, the captured waste could drive a thermoelectric generator or some other form of heat engine? (waste heat from the batteries too) The vehicle needs radiators as is, they could be paired or replaced with another solution that improves efficiency. I know new battery tech is likely to be released before any other solutions can even make it to market. either way im hoping for longer lasting EV's with less demand on battery resources.

earth and 0 volts are different, engineers even use different electrical symbols to differentiate them. earth is a physical electrical connection to earth, 0 volts is the reference in a circuit in which everything else is referenced. the confusion comes, as sometimes they are joined, but not always.

We like to go camping because everyday life is on a schedule, but holidays, in our view, should be different-carefree. Booking hotels, etc, means tying yourself to a schedule, and you might change your mind- lets stay longer here, and sorter at another replace. No checking in and checking out of hotels, packing and repacking. Get up late or get up early. Packaged tours are for morons. Go to see this wine cellar here, or the diamond shop over there. Tour guides saying: "We are walking, we are walking, and here on your left [as if you have no situational awareness at all] is X, X is interesting because...." Yeah, all that shit is not not our idea of getting away from it all...

Another thing about a fight, unless you are inside a ring with an umpire, there's no such thing as a fair fight. Use every advantage that you have. Hit first and hard, kick the knee sideways, and do not lose your cognizance and just wildly swing. The torch clutched in your fist, keeps your fist supported and adds Inertia. You are less likely to rainbow the bones in your hand, while transferring additional energy into them... And for the bad guys, don't expect to easily jump the smallest guy. We have been dealing with this our whole life, and sometimes they are a Army Ranger. It's funny how dark a veteran's humor can become from someone trying to poke holes through you.

@@AutoExpertJC I used to deliver pizzas years ago, we had a run of drivers being robbed, so they started carrying all sorts of weapons in the car. At the time, I had access to Snap On gear - no slight to Olight, this was 25 years ago. I had a large, 5 D-cell torch without which I never got out of the car. This thing was well over a foot long, close to two inches in diameter along the barrel and was heavy duty grade aluminium, with 5 D cell batteries inside. It had heft and reach. We had some of the local constabulary come and speak to us, one of them suggested a large torch - I mentioned I had one. He asked if he'd mind if he gave a demonstration with it, I said no worries. He hit a bloody brick with it and actually broke the brick - minor scratching to the torch and it still worked. His advice was that this is clearly a torch, it has a purpose NOT as a weapon. On that basis, it's perfectly reasonable to carry such an item in the course of doing the job, especially at night. If it comes in handy for protection, that's just good luck. He did point out that almost any bone in the human body will break more easily than the brick. So there's that.

I'm sure you've done a video on this topic before, so can I ask for a link to your video on dual cab Ute's. I'm currently in the market for a dual cab 4x4 ute and with so much on the market to choose from its a rather daunting task sorting through what is and isn't a good buy. I'm wanting a dual cab ute so to be able to load the bikes out on my weekends off and for the odd short trip to dingo piss creek. Other than that it will basically be a run about for the wife and the young fella. I do like the look of the triton for the 10 year warranty but am sceptical of the rear end seeing some of them snap off due to heavy hauling. I also like the look of the new dmax but their warranties are nowhere near the mark some other makers are offering. Many thanks to you for your help with this daunting task, your advice is greatly appreciated.

Ah, a fix of Cado in the morning when I watch, listen, whatever. Better than a coffee. On static electricity, I had a Volvo years ago that was determined to zap me, when I got out and shut the door an enormous spark would leap from my hand to the door accompanied by a noise that would attract peoples attention. So I would leap from the car, not touching it and kick the door shut with the sole of my shoe, much to the astonishment of passersby. BUT, if I entered a shop where I had to open a metal framed door I would get zapped accompanied by a resounding noise. I never refueled the car and would not touch a fuel pump for fear of the whole servo erupting in flames. I could only conclude it was the combination of the seat fabric and my body was the cause, as it happened to no one else, I wasnt wearing spandex, dont think it was even invented then. Gave the bloody car to the then missus and bought a ute. Problem solvered.

just a quickie, metric or imperial 1,2,3 blocks? is it a personal preference? i use metric for almost everything, so may be a straightforward answer of "metric" dude. PS, thanks for explaining why the "auto locks" at the pump dispensers were removed, had me intrigued for many years. (yep, 1960's vintage i am lol. side note, diesel pumps do still have them, different kettle of fish i gather. cheers Frank PPS , I hope your father gets well soon. (yes, I'm typing as i watch the vid, memory like a goldfish hehe) PPS , your last part about being in an awkward situation was eye opening. I'm definitely an average Joe, not experienced in close combat per say, but i have to say, that advice you gave about using a good torch was invaluable. hope i never need to use it . thanks again, great content John

Regarding static discharge, just like any other current it does require a completed circuit in order for that current to flow. The problem with our incredulous friend is that he apparently doesn't understand that very high voltage potentials like what we see with static discharge can use air as a path to complete the circuit. This is precisely why static electricity is dangerous when filling vessels with flammable shit... because it can easily and unpredictably (at least for people who don't understand electricity) find its way to ground through the air.
